Ambaji and Mount Abu sit about 50 km apart on the Gujarat–Rajasthan border, so one taxi from Ahmedabad covers the Shakti Peeth, Gabbar, Dilwara and Arbuda Devi in two days. Leave by 5 am, take darshan before the 11:30 am break, sleep in Mount Abu, and you are home the next evening. Here are the route, timings and costs.
The drive north runs through Mehsana and Palanpur, then into the Aravalli foothills past Danta to Ambaji — 3.5 to 4 hours with one chai stop. The Ambaji–Mount Abu leg is short but slow: it drops to Abu Road and then climbs a 28 km ghat of hairpin bends.
| Leg | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad → Ambaji (via Mehsana, Palanpur) | about 185–190 km | 3.5–4 hrs |
| Ambaji → Mount Abu (via Abu Road) | about 50 km | 1.5–2 hrs |
| Abu Road → Mount Abu ghat section | 28 km | about 45 min |
| Mount Abu → Ahmedabad (via Abu Road, Palanpur) | longer than the Ambaji leg | allow about 5 hrs |
Do the ghat in daylight: winter fog and monsoon rain both cut visibility on the bends, and heavy July rain has closed the road with landslides in past years.
Day 1 — Ahmedabad to Ambaji to Mount Abu
5 am: leave Ahmedabad. Breakfast near Palanpur.
9–9:30 am: reach Ambaji. Darshan in the morning slot, well before the 11:30 am closure.
11:30 am–1 pm: Gabbar hill, about 4–5 km away. The ropeway runs roughly 7 am to 4 pm; the 999 steps are the alternative.
1 pm: lunch in Ambaji, then drive to Mount Abu via Abu Road.
4–5 pm: check in. Nakki Lake and Sunset Point before dark.
Day 2 — Mount Abu to Ahmedabad
Early morning: Arbuda Devi (Adhar Devi) — 365 steps up to the cave shrine, before the sun is high.
Mid-morning: Guru Shikhar (1,722 m, highest point in the Aravallis) and Achalgarh, about 10 km out.
12 pm: Dilwara the moment it opens to non-Jains. Give it an hour.
1:30 pm: lunch, then down the ghat and home by about 7 pm.
There is no murti in the Ambaji garbhagriha. You take darshan of a gold-plated Shree Yantra with 51 bijpatra, one for each Shakti Peeth; Ambaji is the Peeth where Sati's heart is believed to have fallen. Entry is free.
Darshan runs in three slots: 7–11:30 am, 12:30–4:30 pm and 6:30–9 pm. Morning aarti is around 7–7:30 am and evening aarti around 7 pm; the exact minute shifts by season. The full Ambaji darshan guide covers the aarti and Navratri arrangements in detail.
Weekdays: a normal darshan takes roughly 20–40 minutes end to end.
Friday to Sunday: the queue roughly doubles. Arrive before 8 am.
Poonam (full moon) days: lakhs come on foot; treat it as a festival day.
Dilwara is five marble Jain temples a short drive from the Mount Abu market. Jain yatris may enter from early morning; non-Jain visitors are admitted only from 12 noon, and the gate closes between 5 and 6 pm by season. Entry is free, but phones, cameras and leather stay at the deposit counter outside.
The other stops:
Arbuda Devi (Adhar Devi): 365 carved steps, then a crawl into a rock cave; about 2 km north of Nakki Lake. Open roughly 5 am to 7–8 pm.
Guru Shikhar: 1,722 m, Dattatreya mandir at the top; a short climb from the car park.
Achalgarh: 10 km out; Achaleshwar Mahadev mandir is open about 5 am to 7 pm.
Nakki Lake: boating about 9:30 am to 6 pm, roughly ₹150–300 a boat.
Ranges checked in early October 2026, not quotes; Diwali-week rates in Mount Abu run well above them.
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Sedan, Ahmedabad → Mount Abu, one way | from about ₹2,600 |
| Innova / SUV, Ahmedabad → Mount Abu, one way | from about ₹4,100 |
| Multi-day hire, per km | roughly ₹12–13.5 plus driver allowance |
| Mount Abu budget hotel, per night | ₹600–1,500 off-season; far higher on holiday weekends |
| Ambaji dharamshala / trust guest house, per night | ₹500–2,000 |
| Gabbar ropeway, return | about ₹125 adult, ₹70 child |
| Dilwara, Ambaji darshan | free |
A Gujarat-registered taxi also pays a Rajasthan state entry tax at the border and a small municipal charge at the Mount Abu check post. Ask whether both are inside the quote.
With elderly parents: ropeway at Gabbar, skip the 365 steps at Arbuda Devi, sleep in Mount Abu.
With small children: Nakki Lake boating and Sunset Point on Day 1 evening; Dilwara at noon before the afternoon heat.
On a budget: dharamshala in Ambaji on Day 1 night, Mount Abu as a day visit; shared jeeps from Abu Road cover the hill circuit.
On one day only: Ahmedabad–Ambaji–Ahmedabad is doable; Mount Abu is not. See what to do in Ahmedabad between departures if you add a city day.
Reaching Ambaji at 11:45 am. The mandir has just closed; you wait till 12:30 pm and lose the Gabbar window.
Doing Dilwara in the morning. Non-Jains are turned away before noon.
Taking the ghat at night in December. Fog on the hairpins turns a 45-minute climb into a slow, tense hour.
Arriving in Mount Abu without a room in Diwali week. Hotels show house-full boards; the town has recorded over 90,000 visitors in one Diwali week.
Sleep in Mount Abu if Day 2 is the hill circuit; Arbuda Devi and Dilwara are then minutes from the room. Budget hotels near the market start around ₹600–1,500 a night in quiet months; rooms near Nakki Lake fill first on weekends.
Sleep in Ambaji if you want the evening aarti and an early second darshan. Trust guest houses and dharamshalas near the mandir run about ₹500–2,000 a night. Book either town ahead for Navratri (11–20 October 2026) and Diwali week.
Fix the Day 1 start for the morning slot and Day 2 noon for Dilwara, and the rest takes care of itself. Jai Ambe.
