Dwarka, Somnath and Girnar sit in a rough triangle across Saurashtra, and Yatris from Ahmedabad want to cover all three in one trip now. The loop runs past 1,000 km of driving, so rushing it means arriving tired at each darshan — here's how to pick the version that fits your group.
Tour operators consistently sequence this circuit the same way, and there's a reason: it avoids backtracking. From Ahmedabad, the standard order runs Jamnagar → Dwarka → Porbandar → Somnath → Junagadh (Girnar) → back to Ahmedabad.
Jamnagar breaks the first long drive and lets you see Lakhota Lake and Bala Hanuman Temple before pushing on. Dwarka gets two nights on longer itineraries, since Bet Dwarka and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga both sit outside the main town. Porbandar works better as a half-day stop between Dwarka and Somnath than as an overnight halt.
Here's the leg-by-leg breakdown:
| Leg | Distance | Drive Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad → Jamnagar | 305 km | ~6 hrs |
| Jamnagar → Dwarka | 141 km | ~2.5–3 hrs |
| Dwarka → Porbandar | 100 km | ~2 hrs |
| Porbandar → Somnath | 130 km | ~2.5 hrs |
| Somnath → Junagadh (Girnar) | ~91 km | ~1.75 hrs |
| Junagadh → Ahmedabad | 316 km | ~4.5–5 hrs |
That's roughly 1,080 km for the full loop. Groups short on time sometimes skip Jamnagar and Porbandar, driving straight from Ahmedabad to Dwarka (440 km, 8–9 hours) instead — one long day instead of two moderate ones.
Most itineraries use four overnight halts: Jamnagar, Dwarka, Somnath and Junagadh. Six-day versions add a second Dwarka night so the Bet Dwarka boat crossing and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga aren't rushed into one afternoon.
Porbandar rarely gets an overnight halt — it's close enough to both Dwarka and Somnath that groups treat it as a stop for Kirti Mandir and the Sudama Temple, then keep driving.
Junagadh is worth two nights if you're climbing Girnar's steps to the Gorakhnath and Dattatreya shrines above the ropeway's Ambaji Temple stop — that climb starts before sunrise, and the ropeway alone (7 AM–4 PM) covers only part of the hill.
October to March is the window every operator and both temple trusts point to. Coastal Saurashtra stays between 12°C and 28°C through these months — dry and clear enough for the open-air Girnar climb and the Somnath beachfront aarti.
November to February is peak season, overlapping Diwali and Makar Sankranti, so book Dwarka and Somnath hotels early if you're traveling then.
Avoid June to September: monsoon rain makes Girnar's stone steps slippery, and the ropeway can suspend service without notice in high wind. If your dates land on the Girnar Lili Parikrama — five days around Kartik Purnima, November 20–24 in 2026 — expect heavy crowds around Junagadh.
Not every group needs the same version of this circuit. Here's how to match the day count to who's traveling:
Elders or families with young kids — take the 8-day version. It adds a Sasan Gir detour and keeps every driving day under 3 hours.
Budget-conscious groups — the 4-day version cuts Jamnagar and Porbandar, driving Ahmedabad–Dwarka direct and saving two hotel nights.
Tight weekend schedule — 4 days works, but accept two 8–9 hour driving days; it's not a relaxed trip.
First-timers with no strong preference — 6 days is the sweet spot most operators default to, covering all five towns without back-to-back marathon drives.
What to avoid: don't try this as a day trip from Ahmedabad — Dwarka alone is 440 km one way. And don't schedule the 4-day version during monsoon months, when the Girnar leg turns unpredictable.
The route runs mostly on NH51 and well-maintained state highways across the Saurashtra peninsula — flat, mostly two-lane, with small-town traffic through Porbandar and Junagadh rather than open-highway congestion.
Night driving isn't recommended on the Jamnagar–Dwarka and Somnath–Junagadh stretches, since street lighting thins out past town limits. Plan halts to arrive by early evening; every leg passes through at least one town with dhabas and petrol pumps, so you won't need to carry supplies.
Each temple keeps its own aarti and darshan schedule, and timing your halt around it matters more than the drive itself. Dwarka's Dwarkadhish Temple has a fuller daily aarti cycle than Somnath — see the Dwarkadhish darshan timings and aarti schedule before you fix your Dwarka night.
Somnath adds an evening light-and-sound show after the last aarti, worth building into your Somnath halt rather than rushing back to the hotel — details are in the Somnath darshan, aarti and light show guide.
For Girnar, decide ropeway versus climb before you arrive in Junagadh, since the ropeway's 7 AM–4 PM window and ticket queues affect how early you need to leave — full timings are in the Girnar ropeway guide from Ahmedabad.
Sasan Gir sits roughly 55 km from Junagadh — Asia's only wild lion habitat, with its own morning safari slot to book in advance. It's the reason 8-day packages exist.
It's not essential to the pilgrimage circuit, so 4-day and 6-day versions usually skip it. With extra days, add it after Junagadh so the safari doesn't compete with an early Girnar climb.
Jamnagar has more organized business-hotel options than Dwarka itself, useful for a comfortable room on night one. Dwarka's hotels cluster near the temple and Gomti Ghat — book within walking distance for the early morning Mangala aarti without a taxi.
Somnath's hotel belt faces the temple along the beach road, and sea-facing rooms sell out first in the Nov–Feb season. Junagadh has fewer high-end options than the coastal towns, so book early if your dates overlap the Lili Parikrama.
However many days you give it, this loop rewards a slower pace more than a fast one — Dwarka, Somnath and Girnar each ask for time, not just a checklist visit. Plan your halts around the darshan windows, not the other way round. Jai Dwarkadhish, Har Har Mahadev.
