Bhimashankar's Jyotirlinga and Lonavala's hill-station cafes sound like two different trips, but they sit close enough on the map to share one weekend out of Pune or Mumbai. The catch: there is no direct ghat road linking them, so the plan only works if you get the order and the driving legs right.
This guide lays out the real distances, the darshan and trek timings, and which stops in Lonavala and Khandala are worth the detour.
On a map, Bhimashankar and Lonavala look barely 40 km apart — the straight-line distance through the forest. There is no through-road across the Sahyadri ridge here, so a car drops to the plains near Manchar and climbs back up, nearly tripling the real distance.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Pune → Bhimashankar | ~110–125 km | 3–3.5 hrs |
| Bhimashankar → Lonavala | ~115–125 km | 3–3.5 hrs |
| Lonavala → Pune | ~65 km | 1.5–2 hrs (up to 4 hrs Friday evening) |
| Lonavala → Mumbai | ~83 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
A rougher alternative runs via Karjat, Kashele and Khandas toward Ganesh Ghat, used often by bikers and trekkers. It is narrow and single-lane in places — better suited to a two-wheeler than a taxi doing two legs in a weekend.
Reach Bhimashankar by mid-morning, take darshan, and start back down while there is still daylight. The Kakad Aarti begins around 4:30 AM, the sanctum briefly shuts for the Madhyan Aarti, and the Shayan Aarti closes the day near 9–9:30 PM — plan the climb around that gap.
Two marked trails lead up from the base:
Ganesh Ghat — the longer, gentler climb, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours, favoured by first-time trekkers.
Shidi Ghat — steeper, with ladder and rope sections; faster, but needs a head for heights.
For a full breakdown of both, read the Bhimashankar Trek Guide — Ganesh Ghat vs Shidi Ghat.
The temple also sits inside a wildlife sanctuary protecting the shekru, Maharashtra's state animal and a giant flying squirrel found almost nowhere else nearby. Add an hour for a short sanctuary walk — see our Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary guide.
Leave Bhimashankar by early afternoon so you are not driving the Manchar–Chakan stretch after dark; the road is fine but unlit near Rajgurunagar. Most Yatris reach Lonavala by evening, in time for dinner before Day 2's sightseeing.
If travelling by bus, note that Pune–Bhimashankar and Pune–Lonavala are separate ST routes with no direct service between the towns — see the Pune to Bhimashankar — Distance, Bus & Taxi Fares guide for stand details.
Save the viewpoints for Day 2, when you are not racing daylight for a trek. Karla Caves, among the largest rock-cut Buddhist chaityas in the region, is managed by the ASI and opens 9 AM to 5 PM daily, with roughly 300 to 350 steps from the parking area.
Worth building your morning around:
Karla Caves — ASI site, 9 AM–5 PM, ~300–350 steps, a nominal entry fee for Indian visitors.
Tiger Point and Lion Point — cliff-edge viewpoints, best at sunrise or just before sunset.
Rajmachi — a longer detour for a second, easier trek instead of more sightseeing.
Bhushi Dam — fine for a photo stop outside monsoon, best skipped in it.
A new 13.3 km bypass on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the "Missing Link," opened on 1 May 2026 and eases the old ghat bottleneck between Khopoli and Lonavala — the Lonavala-to-Mumbai leg now runs faster.
Match the plan to who is travelling:
Elders or first-timers — take darshan by taxi, skip the trek, and relax both evenings in Lonavala; Ganesh Ghat is strenuous for unaccustomed knees.
Budget travellers — ST buses cover Pune–Bhimashankar and Pune–Lonavala separately, so budget a Pune halt, or share a taxi for the missing stretch.
Tight schedule — leave Friday night or before 6 AM Saturday, since past monsoon weekends have packed close to 40,000 cars into a town with about 3,000 hotel rooms.
Trekkers — start Ganesh Ghat by 7 AM Day 1 to be back at the gate with daylight before driving to Lonavala.
Whichever order you pick, do the temple leg first. Darshan queues and trek trails both reward an early start, while Lonavala's cafes stay open late and forgive a delayed arrival.

Base near the Bhimashankar temple for Day 1 only if catching the 4:30 AM Kakad Aarti; a Manchar or Rajgurunagar halt otherwise works just as well and costs less. Read the full Bhimashankar Stay Guide for an early darshan for that option.
Lonavala and Khandala have far more hotel choice than Bhimashankar for Day 2, but rooms sell out fastest on monsoon Saturdays and long weekends. Lock your dates before you fix the rest of the itinerary.
Treat Bhimashankar and Lonavala as two distinct legs stitched together over one weekend, not one hill road, and the circuit works well even on a tight Saturday–Sunday. Har Har Mahadev.
