Daulatabad Fort and Bibi Ka Maqbara sit about 16 km apart, on either side of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar — and yes, you can cover both in a half day. Daulatabad's ASI ticket costs ₹25 for Indians, ₹300 for foreigners, and the fort alone needs 2-3 hours up to Chand Minar. Here's how the timings and drive line up.
Daulatabad, the old Devagiri fort, sits about 15-16 km from central Sambhajinagar, roughly a 30-40 minute drive depending on traffic near the highway junction. It opens daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the ASI ticket is ₹25 for Indian visitors, ₹300 for foreign visitors.
The fort's signature climb is Chand Minar and the moat-and-tunnel defenses just past the entrance — most visitors comfortably cover this in 2-3 hours. Reaching the true summit means over 700 steps and another 1-2 hours of steep, narrow stairs, which most half-day itineraries skip.
Go in the morning if you can. The stone steps get punishingly hot by midday, and September's lingering monsoon humidity makes the lower sections slippery after rain.
Bibi Ka Maqbara, built as Aurangzeb's wife's tomb and modelled on the Taj Mahal, sits much closer to the centre — about 5-6 km from the railway station area, inside the old city. It's open longer than Daulatabad, roughly 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily.
Entry costs the same ₹25 (Indian) / ₹300 (foreign) ASI ticket, though a few older listings still quote ₹20/₹250 — carry a little extra cash rather than exact change. Most visitors need 45-60 minutes to see the mausoleum, gardens and the small museum inside the gatehouse.
Because it's marble-domed and open-air, the courtyard gets bright and hot by late morning; an early or late-afternoon visit photographs better and feels cooler underfoot.
| Site | Entry Fee (Indian / Foreign) | Hours | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daulatabad Fort | ₹25 / ₹300 | 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM | 2-3 hours |
| Bibi Ka Maqbara | ₹25 / ₹300 | 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM | 45-60 minutes |
| Panchakki | Nominal (a few rupees) | Morning to evening | 20-30 minutes |
These are three of the five ticketed ASI sites in the district, alongside Ajanta and Ellora — our Ellora Caves timings guide covers that one if you're stacking a longer trip.
Panchakki, the 17th-century water mill built to grind grain for pilgrims at a nearby dargah, sits only about 2 km from Bibi Ka Maqbara — a five-minute drive or a manageable walk in cooler weather. Entry is a nominal few rupees, and most visitors are through in 20-30 minutes.
Stacking Panchakki right after Bibi Ka Maqbara is the easiest add-on to this circuit, since both sites share the same old-city neighbourhood. It doesn't need its own separate trip out of the city like Daulatabad does.
Start at Daulatabad, drive 20-25 minutes into the old city, then finish Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki back to back — the whole loop fits inside 4-5 hours, door to door.
Still photography is included in the entry ticket at both monuments, so there's no separate camera fee for a regular phone or DSLR. Video filming has occasionally attracted a small additional charge at ASI sites, and drone photography needs prior ASI clearance — don't plan to fly one without applying ahead of your visit.
Bibi Ka Maqbara is a functioning mausoleum, so modest dress — covered shoulders and knees — is more respectful than shorts or sleeveless tops, even though it isn't strictly checked at the gate. Daulatabad's climb calls for closed shoes with grip, not sandals, especially if any part of the fort is damp.
One more thing worth knowing: the ASI has, in some past years, waived entry fees briefly around Independence Day and World Heritage Week in November. If your visit falls on one of those dates, the counter may not be collecting anything at all.
Short on time (half a day only): do Daulatabad's lower fort and Chand Minar first, then Bibi Ka Maqbara — skip Panchakki if you're pressed.
Travelling with kids or elders: stick to the fort's entrance area and skip the summit climb; both monuments then work fine at a relaxed pace.
Heritage enthusiasts wanting it all: add Panchakki after the Maqbara, then Ellora Caves the next morning since it's the same route out of the city.
What to avoid: the Daulatabad climb between noon and 3 PM in warm months, and Mondays if a museum stop matters, since some sections close that day.
Basing yourself in central Sambhajinagar (CIDCO or the Cantonment area) keeps both monuments within easy drive — Daulatabad around 30-40 minutes out, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki closer still. Our where-to-stay guide compares CIDCO against Khuldabad if you're also headed toward Ellora.
For just this fort-and-tomb circuit, though, staying centrally is simpler — you're never more than 30-40 minutes from either site, and you're back at the hotel well before evening.
Two monuments, one straightforward loop, and you're back at your hotel well before dinner — that's really all this circuit takes.
