Kartik Purnima, also called Tripuri Purnima, falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026 at Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga near Sambhajinagar. It's one of only four major festival days on the temple's calendar, alongside Shravan, Ganesh Chaturthi and Maha Shivratri. Here's the confirmed date, what the temple does that day, and the fastest way in from Sambhajinagar before the crowd builds.
Kartik Purnima 2026 is confirmed for Tuesday, 24 November, per panchang calculations. The Purnima tithi begins around 11:42 PM on 23 November and runs to roughly 8:23 PM on 24 November, so families do snan and darshan through the day of the 24th.
The festival is also called Tripuri Purnima, marking the day Shiva is believed to have destroyed the demon Tripurasura and his three flying cities. It doubles as Dev Diwali, the festival of light, with lamps at temples and river ghats that evening.
Grishneshwar keeps Kartik Purnima as one of its four named festival days, so expect a heavier pooja schedule than a normal Tuesday. Devotees book Panchamrut Pujan, Mahapuja and Rudra Abhishek at the temple counter — there's no online slot booking, so arrive early for a seva before the general crowd fills the mandap.
General darshan stays free, and Grishneshwar is unusual among the twelve Jyotirlingas in letting devotees touch the Shivling. On Shravan Mondays and Maha Shivratri the temple stretches hours to roughly 3:00 AM–11:00 PM; our Grishneshwar darshan timings and aarti guide has the full daily schedule if you want the normal-day baseline before comparing it to festival hours.
Grishneshwar sits about 30 km from Sambhajinagar, reached via Daulatabad Fort (15 km) and Khuldabad (24 km) before the temple at Verul (30 km), itself barely 1 km from the Ellora Caves gate. A private taxi covers this in 45–55 minutes on a normal day.
Add roughly 15 extra minutes on the Ellora stretch during Shravan Mondays and Maha Shivratri, and expect the same on Kartik Purnima as local traffic thickens near Khuldabad.
MSRTC also runs two Volvo buses daily from the Central Bus Stand, departing 8:30 AM and reaching Ellora by about 11:00 AM for roughly ₹344; there's no advance online booking, only counter tickets on the day.
Kartik Purnima also closes out the Tulsi Vivah window, the ceremonial wedding of Tulsi and Vishnu that begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Many families finish that ritual at home before setting out for temple darshan the same week.
The date pulls crowds across Maharashtra's Shiva temples, not just Grishneshwar — Trimbakeshwar near Nashik marks the same Tripuri Purnima with moonlight-infused kheer. That statewide movement of Yatris is exactly why rooms and taxis near Verul tighten up fast in the days before the 24th.
Grishneshwar has no official Kartik Purnima footfall count yet, so the closest benchmark is Maha Shivratri at Grishneshwar, where crowds push queue waits to 1–3 hours. Kartik Purnima draws a smaller fair crowd, mostly between mid-morning and early evening.
| Aspect | Normal Tuesday | Kartik Purnima 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Darshan hours | 5:30 AM–3:00 PM, 7:30–9:30 PM | Likely extended, unconfirmed — check on arrival |
| Expected wait | Minutes | Up to 1–2 hours by afternoon |
| Ellora Caves | Closed (weekly off) | Closed (same weekly off) |
| Parking near temple | Easy | Fills by mid-morning |
Leave Sambhajinagar before sunrise to reach Grishneshwar by 6:30–7:00 AM, well ahead of the mid-morning surge, and you'll likely clear darshan in well under an hour.
Do your Abhishek or Mahapuja booking at the temple counter the moment you arrive — slots for named sevas fill first on festival mornings, before the general queue even builds.
With elders or small children: take the 6:30 AM slot with a private taxi that waits — a Kartik Purnima queue for hours is hard on both.
On a budget: the 8:30 AM MSRTC Volvo is cheap but lands you in the late-morning peak, so eat breakfast before you leave.
On a tight schedule: skip Ellora Caves that day since they're shut anyway, and use the time for a longer, calmer darshan.
First-time Jyotirlinga Yatris: try the touch-the-Shivling darshan unique to Grishneshwar, and check our Grishneshwar temple logistics guide for dress code and what you can carry inside.
Rooms directly around Verul and Khuldabad are limited, and on high-footfall days like Shivratri they sell out days in advance — Kartik Purnima behaves the same way, just on a smaller scale. The temple trust also runs basic dharamshala-style rooms for Yatris who want to be close for the early aarti.
MTDC guest houses near the Ellora Caves gate offer a more comfortable mid-range option barely minutes from the temple. If those fill up, Sambhajinagar city itself, 30 km away, has far more hotel choice and lets you start the drive fresh and early on the 24th.
Plan the drive early, keep the Ellora Caves for another day, and let the Kartik Purnima lamps at Grishneshwar close out your Yatra. Har Har Mahadev.
