Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from 11 to 20 October, and it's the single busiest window of the year to attempt Vaishno Devi — busier than most planners realize until they're already stuck in a queue at Katra.
A weekend trip from Delhi is possible during this window, but only if you plan around the crowd rather than against it.
Here's what the dates actually mean for your trip, and where a 2-day plan gets tight.
Delhi's advantage here is genuine distance, not just a shorter drive — Jammu is reachable in a few hours by train or air, which makes Vaishno Devi one of the few major Devi shrines a Delhi pilgrim can realistically attempt over a single weekend at all, Navratri or not.
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs 11-20 October, from Ghatasthapana to Vijayadashami. On a normal day, Vaishno Devi sees roughly 25,000-35,000 pilgrims; through Navratri, this routinely climbs to 60,000-80,000 or more per day, with the total over the nine days running into several lakh.
This isn't meant to discourage the trip — it's meant to set realistic expectations. A day that's routine outside Navratri can look very different during it, and the difference matters most for anyone trying to fit this into a tight weekend.
Delhi connects to Jammu by both train and flight, with journey times short enough that a weekend attempt is at least physically possible:
| Mode | Option | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Train (direct to Katra) | Vande Bharat Express | ~8 hours |
| Train (to Jammu) | Vande Bharat Express | ~6 hr 43 min |
| Train (overnight) | Shri Shakti Express, Jammu Rajdhani | ~8-8.5 hours |
| Flight | Multiple daily to Jammu (IXJ) | ~1.5 hours |
Fares on all of these rise noticeably as Navratri approaches, and flight prices in particular can surge well beyond an ordinary-week fare — book as early as you can rather than waiting to see if prices drop.
From Katra, the trek to the Bhawan covers roughly 12-13 km via Ardhkuwari, typically 5-7 hours up and 3-5 hours down depending on fitness and crowd density. Battery cars run only the Ardhkuwari-to-Bhawan stretch, not from Katra itself.
The helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat cuts the climb dramatically, priced at roughly ₹2,320 one-way, bookable up to 60 days ahead on the shrine board's own site.
During Navratri specifically, these slots are reported to sell out within minutes of the daily booking window opening — set an alarm for the exact release time if you're counting on this option.
A free RFID Yatra Registration Card is mandatory, available online in advance or at 24/7 counters from Banganga checkpoint onward. Current shrine board rules require starting your yatra within 12 hours of the card being issued, and completing the trip and returning to Katra within 24 hours of starting.
This timing rule is exactly why a 2-day weekend plan is tight rather than comfortable during Navratri — your entire climb, darshan and descent need to fit inside that 24-hour window, with no built-in slack for the longer queues this time of year brings.
Given how tight the RFID window makes a strict two-day plan during Navratri, a third day changes the trip meaningfully — it turns a rushed climb-darshan-descent sequence into one with actual rest built in, particularly valuable if anyone in your group is trekking rather than taking the helicopter.
Katra itself has a full range of accommodation, so the extra night doesn't need advance planning months out the way the helicopter slot does — it's the RFID timing and the helicopter booking window that need the early planning, not the hotel room.
Fit, flexible, comfortable with a helicopter both ways: a tight 2-day weekend is achievable, though not relaxed.
Planning to trek both ways: budget more than a weekend — the trek time alone, at Navratri crowd density, can eat most of your 24-hour registration window.
Travelling with elders or young children: consider dates just outside the 11-20 October window, when the darshan experience is far less compressed.
Booking last-minute: expect higher fares across trains, flights and the helicopter, and don't assume any single option will still have availability close to the date.
Navratri makes this the most meaningful time to go and the least forgiving time to under-plan — get the registration timing and the Katra-to-Bhawan option right, and the crowd becomes part of the atmosphere rather than the obstacle. Jai Mata Di.
