Katra is a train ride away, Haridwar and Rishikesh are a half-day's drive, and the full Chardham circuit is a two-week commitment. The yatra that fits your calendar depends entirely on how many days you can give it. This guide lines up three realistic options from Delhi and helps you match your days off to one of them.
If you only have a Saturday-Sunday, Vaishno Devi is the yatra that actually fits. Katra is roughly 650 km from Delhi, covered by an overnight train in about 10.5-12 hours. Eight or more direct trains run daily, and from Katra it's a paved 13 km trek up to the Bhawan.
Pony, palki, and helicopter options cover part of that climb for those who need it. Yatris typically leave Friday night, trek and take darshan Saturday, rest that night, and return by Sunday's train, reaching Delhi Monday morning. It's the only yatra here that closes in a genuine weekend.
Five days opens up Haridwar and Rishikesh together — they're barely 20-25 km apart — with enough slack to push toward one dham. Delhi to Haridwar is about 230 km by road (5-6 hours), and Rishikesh sits another 20-25 minutes further.
A typical 5-day plan looks like this:
Day 1: Drive to Haridwar for the Ganga Aarti.
Day 2: Explore Rishikesh.
Days 3-4: Push toward Yamunotri, or continue further if roads and season allow.
Day 5: Return to Delhi.
This tier suits Yatris who want a genuine hill dham but can't clear a full fortnight.
The full Chardham circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is a different scale of trip entirely. It cannot be squeezed into a short break.
Kedarnath alone is about 450 km by road to Gaurikund (14-16 hours), plus a 16 km trek to the temple. Badrinath is roughly 535 km by road (12-16 hours), usually split across two days with a halt.
Elders or first-time Himalayan travellers: Vaishno Devi weekend — shortest trek, best infrastructure, least altitude risk.
Tight office schedule (under a week): 5-day Haridwar-Rishikesh-plus-one-dham — real hill darshan without burning your whole leave balance.
Budget-conscious groups: Haridwar-Rishikesh weekend alone — closest hill destination, lowest transport cost, no registration needed.
Serious Yatris with 2 weeks free: Full Chardham circuit — only attempt this with the full 10-12 days; don't compress it.
What to avoid: don't add Kedarnath or Badrinath onto a 3-day trip — road time alone eats two of your three days.
| Option | Typical Duration | One-way Distance from Delhi | Best Months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaishno Devi (Katra) | 2D1N | ~650 km (train) | May-Jun, Sep-Nov |
| Haridwar-Rishikesh | 2-3 days | ~230 km (road) | Oct-Mar |
| Haridwar-Rishikesh + 1 Dham | 5 days | ~230-535 km | May-Jun, Sep-Oct |
| Full Chardham Circuit | 10-12 days (12-14 from Delhi) | 450-535 km per dham | May-Jun, Sep-Oct |
Timing changes with the option you pick. Chardham opens on Akshaya Tritiya — April 19, 2026 for Yamunotri and Gangotri, with Kedarnath and Badrinath following within days. It closes around Diwali/Bhai Dooj, typically late October to mid-November.
May-June and September-October are the safest windows for the full circuit: clear roads, working infrastructure, and lower landslide risk than the monsoon. July-August should be avoided entirely — heavy rain brings landslides on the same highways your taxi will use.
Vaishno Devi and Haridwar-Rishikesh are far more forgiving year-round. Summer (May-June) and the post-monsoon months (September-November) are still the most comfortable for trekking or standing in the Ganga Aarti crowd.
Vaishno Devi weekend: train fare plus 1 night's stay in Katra; the trek itself is free, with optional pony, palki, or helicopter charges on top.
Haridwar-Rishikesh: road transport plus 1-2 nights' stay; no registration needed, making it the simplest option to plan on short notice.
Full Chardham: taxi or tempo traveller for 10-12 days, hotel and dharamshala stays at each dham, plus mandatory biometric yatra registration before Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Every tier before Chardham needs zero registration paperwork — that alone makes them faster to plan when your leave gets approved late.
For any option, a night in Haridwar or Rishikesh works as a natural halfway stop before the hills. In Katra, staying close to the Banganga end of the trek path shortens your morning walk to the gate.
On the full circuit, book each dham's stay a season ahead. Rooms at Kedarnath and Badrinath fill up fast once the yatra opens.
Jai Mata Di, Har Har Mahadev — whichever dham your days allow, may the darshan be worth the road.
