Mumbai to Pandharpur is about 344 km by road via Pune and Solapur, roughly 5–6 hours by car or the fastest train. There's no single direct express that beats the road in speed.
The overnight Dadar–Pandharpur train lets you sleep through the distance and wake up close to the mandir. Here's how the road, rail and overnight options actually compare for a Vitthal darshan trip.
The standard route runs Mumbai → Pune → Solapur → Pandharpur, covering roughly 344 km in about 5–6 hours with normal traffic. This is the most flexible option if you're traveling with family or want to stop along the way rather than commit to a train or bus schedule.
Distance: ~344 km
Drive time: ~5–6 hours, more with Pune's city traffic at the start
Route: Mumbai–Pune Expressway, then NH65 towards Solapur, branching off to Pandharpur
Leave before 5 AM if you want to reach by early afternoon and still have time for darshan before the evening queue builds up.
The overnight 11027 Dadar–Pandharpur Express leaves Dadar around 11:55 PM and reaches Pandharpur by about 8:10 AM, a journey of roughly 8 hours 15 minutes across 13 stops — you lose the night to travel but arrive rested and early.
For a faster daytime option, the Mumbai CSMT–Solapur Vande Bharat Express covers the distance in about 6.5 hours, running six days a week; from Solapur, it's a further 74 km (about 1.5 hours) by road or local transport to reach Pandharpur.
Overnight direct (11027): ~8h 15m, Dadar to Pandharpur, no further transfer needed
Vande Bharat + road (via Solapur): ~6.5h by train, plus ~1.5h onward, faster overall but needs one change
Fastest direct train option (CSMT–Bidar Express): under 6 hours to Pandharpur on the days it runs
MSRTC runs direct services from Mumbai Central to Pandharpur via Panvel, Pune, Hadapsar, Malshiras and Velapur, with fares starting around ₹400 on the standard service and closer to ₹650 on the AC Shivneri buses. The Shivneri option adds Wi-Fi and more comfortable seating for a modest premium over the standard fare.
A bus takes longer than a direct taxi or the Vande Bharat combination, since it stops at multiple towns along the way, but it remains the cheapest way to make the trip if cost matters more than speed.
Standard MSRTC fare: from around ₹400
AC Shivneri fare: around ₹650, with Wi-Fi on board
Route: Mumbai Central → Panvel → Pune → Hadapsar → Malshiras → Velapur → Pandharpur
An overnight train is the easier plan for most travelers: you board after dinner in Mumbai and step off within walking distance of the temple in the morning, with the whole day free for darshan and rest before the return leg.
A same-day road trip is doable but tight — a 5 AM departure gets you in by early afternoon, leaving a few hours before the evening rush, but it means a long single day of driving both ways if you're not staying overnight in Pandharpur.
Overnight train: best if you want a full day in Pandharpur without losing a night's sleep to driving
Same-day drive: workable only with an early start and a driver who can share the load, or a planned overnight stay before returning
Splitting the trip via Solapur: the Vande Bharat option is worth it specifically if you'd rather not do an 8-hour overnight train
| Mode | Time | Approx. cost (one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi | ~5–6 hrs | Higher, but door to door | Families, elders, flexible timing |
| Overnight train (11027) | ~8h 15m | Budget-friendly | Solo travelers, saving a night's stay |
| Vande Bharat + road | ~8 hrs total | Mid-range | Daytime travelers wanting speed |
| MSRTC standard bus | Longest | From ~₹400 | Tightest budgets |
| AC Shivneri bus | Long | ~₹650 | Budget travel with more comfort |
Pandharpur's crowds spike hardest around Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi, when the Wari pilgrimage brings in palkhis on foot from across the state — road traffic into the town slows considerably in the days around these dates, and trains run fuller than usual.
Avoiding festival crowds: pick dates outside the two Ekadashi windows if darshan speed matters more than the festival atmosphere
Traveling during Wari specifically: budget extra hours on the road approach and book train seats well ahead
First-timers: the overnight train is the easiest way to arrive without having driven through a full night beforehand
Most travelers either sleep on the overnight train and go straight to darshan, or base themselves near CSMT, Dadar or the airport the night before departure. Our where to stay in Mumbai before your yatra guide covers options near each of these starting points.
