Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth opens daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, with five aartis marking the day. It stays open round the clock through Ganeshotsav.
Right now, in mid-September 2026, the ten-day festival that began September 14 is still on, with the main immersion falling on September 25.
On a normal day the temple opens at 6 AM and closes at 11 PM. Five aartis structure the day, and most Yatris plan their visit around one of them for the fullest experience.
| Aarti | Time |
|---|---|
| Kakad / Suprabhat Aarti | 7:30 – 7:45 AM |
| Naivedya Aarti | 1:30 – 2:00 PM |
| Madhyan Aarti | 3:00 – 3:15 PM |
| Mahamangal Aarti | 8:00 – 8:15 PM |
| Shejaarti | 10:30 – 10:45 PM |
Aim for the Kakad Aarti window around 7:30 AM. The queue is shortest and the temple is calm before the day's first tour groups arrive.
The daily abhishek runs from 8 AM to 3 PM, so pujaris stay occupied with ritual worship through midday. Early morning, before 7:30 AM, and late evening, after 9 PM, see the shortest lines outside festival season. Avoid 10 AM–12 PM and 5–7 PM, the two daily crowd peaks.
If you're reading this in the third week of September 2026, Ganeshotsav is still underway. The festival started on September 14 and closes with the immersion (visarjan) procession on September 25, and the temple runs 24 hours a day for this entire window.
Once Visarjan passes, the temple returns to its 6 AM–11 PM schedule and the crowd thins within a week.
Planning next year's trip instead? Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 falls on September 4, and the festival closes on September 14, 2027 — worth blocking those dates early.
If Ganpati darshan is the theme of your Pune trip, pair this temple with the Ashtavinayak Yatra from Pune, a two-day circuit of eight ancient Ganesh shrines around the city.
Which visit works for you?
With elders: Come on an ordinary weekday morning before 8 AM. There's no festival crowd, no long standing queue, and parking is easier to find nearby.
On a budget: Regular darshan is free every day. Skip the paid quick-darshan token and simply arrive early instead.
On a tight schedule: Book the special darshan token, which cuts the wait, and combine the visit with the Tulshibaug market right next door.
The temple sits in Budhwar Peth, in Pune's old city core, a short hop from the main railway station.
| From | Distance | Drive Time |
|---|---|---|
| Pune Railway Station | ~3 km | 10–15 min |
| Pune Airport (PNQ) | ~11–12 km | 30–40 min |
Both drive times stretch further during festival week, when Laxmi Road and the surrounding lanes fill with pandals and foot traffic. A taxi can drop you closer than most autos are allowed to go once police diversions start.
For the wider picture on getting into the city first, see our guide to reaching Pune.
Regular darshan is free for everyone, every day of the year. A paid quick-darshan token is also sold for visitors who want a shorter line to the sanctum.
During Ganeshotsav the trust adds extra queue lanes and barricades to manage the crowd, but a token still saves the most time. Expect the heaviest rush in the two hours after the evening Mahamangal Aarti.
Carry a bag only if necessary. The security check near the sanctum moves faster with less to screen.
Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai Gaikwad, a Pune sweet-maker, lost his only son to plague in 1893. On his guru Shri Madhavnath Maharaj's counsel, he installed a Ganesh idol at his own home and opened it to all of Budhwar Peth for worship.
A year later, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak launched the Sarvajanik (public) Ganeshotsav to unite people against British rule, and Dagdusheth's idol became one of its most visible symbols. That link between a private grief and a public festival has stayed unbroken for more than 130 years.
Today's murti carries close to 8 kg of gold, donated over the decades by devotees and jewellers.
The mandal's own immersion procession starts around 4 PM on Anant Chaturdashi and joins the combined procession down Laxmi Road, past Kelkar Road, Kumthekar Road, Tilak Road and Karve Road.
In recent years the full city procession, of which this mandal is one part, has run well past 24 hours, sometimes beyond 30, before the last idol is immersed.
Parking is banned along the entire route from the afternoon of visarjan day. A private taxi that can wait outside the restricted zone beats a self-driven car with nowhere to park.
If darshan, not the procession, is your goal, come a day or two before the 25th. The sanctum stays calmer while the mandal focuses on procession preparations.
Camp and Deccan Gymkhana, both within 15–20 minutes of the temple by road, carry the widest range of hotels for a Pune stay built around darshan. Budhwar Peth itself has small lodges within walking distance, useful mainly if you want to be first in line before 6 AM.
For a longer pilgrimage base that also covers an Ashtavinayak or Shirdi leg afterward, our where-to-stay guide for Pune breaks down neighbourhoods by which onward trip you're planning next.
Dagdusheth's doors have opened every single day since 1893, festival or not, and that steadiness is the real draw behind the crowds. Time your visit around the aartis or the quiet early-morning hour.
The temple gives back exactly what more than a century of devotion built it for. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
