Grishneshwar, the twelfth jyotirlinga at Verul beside the Ellora caves, is about 255 km from Pune by the Ahilyanagar road, 5 to 6 hours by car. A same-day return is possible if you leave Pune by 4:30 am, but adding Ellora makes it a 17-hour day. Here is the honest arithmetic and the plan most families choose.
The route is Pune → Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) → Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar → Verul, and cab operators quote 253 to 258 km. Five hours is a clean run at dawn; six is realistic with a breakfast stop and the Sambhajinagar bypass in daylight.
The Samruddhi Mahamarg tempts people, but it does not serve Pune. Reaching it means driving Sangamner–Shirdi first, about 185 km, then 110 km of expressway to Sambhajinagar: roughly 300 km in all, and the time saving is unproven. Take it only if Shirdi is already a stop.
| Option | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Via Ahilyanagar | ~255 km | 5–6 hrs |
| Via Shirdi and Samruddhi | ~300 km | 5.5–6.5 hrs |
| Sambhajinagar station → temple | ~30 km | 45–55 min |
Tolls on the Ahilyanagar route were not something we could confirm; carry FASTag with balance either way. The road is four-lane most of the way, but the stretch through Ahilyanagar town and the approach to Sambhajinagar both slow down after 8 am, which is another argument for the pre-dawn start.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar station, code CPSN, is 30 km from the temple. Pune has only one direct daily express, an overnight service of 8 to 9 hours, and we could not confirm its current number and times, so check the railway enquiry site.
Arriving at dawn, you take a taxi for ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 round trip, a shared auto for about ₹150 a head, or an MSRTC bus from the Central Bus Stand to Ellora for ₹45 to ₹60. The bus stand is 3 km from the station, a short auto ride.
MSRTC runs about 24 buses a day from Pune to Sambhajinagar, from 12:45 am to 11:45 pm, including AC Shivai and Shivneri services. Ordinary fares run near ₹455 and AC near ₹630, with 5.5 to 6.5 hours on the road. Then you still have the 30 km to Verul.
Neither option gives a same-day return. Bus and train Yatris should plan one night at Verul or in Sambhajinagar, and book the return bus seat before leaving Pune, because evening Shivneri services fill on weekends.
Grishneshwar opens 5:30 am to 9:30 pm on normal days, extended to about 3 am to 11 pm in Shravan and on Mahashivratri. Aarti times reported by Yatri sites are mangal aarti 4 am, jalhari 8 am, mahaprasad at noon and sandhya 7:30 pm.
A late shej aarti follows, but sources disagree on the exact evening close, so do not cut it fine. On a normal weekday morning the darshan line moves in well under an hour; Mondays and Shravan stretch it to several.
Men remove shirts and vests to enter the garbhagriha, women wear traditional dress, and mobiles and cameras stay outside. Our Grishneshwar logistics guide covers the queue and lockers in detail.
Ellora is about 1 km away. Entry is ₹40 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners, free under 15, with online tickets a little cheaper. The caves open from sunrise to sunset, roughly 6 am to 6 pm with last entry around 5 pm, and are closed on Tuesday.
Kailasa alone needs an hour, and the full row of caves stretches over 2 km, so wear shoes you can walk in and carry water.
Plan A, the long day by taxi:
4:30 am leave Pune, tea at Ahilyanagar.
10:00 am reach Verul, darshan, out by noon.
12:30 lunch at Verul, 1:30 to 3:30 Ellora, Kailasa first.
4:00 pm leave, dinner at Ahilyanagar, Pune by 10:30 pm.
Plan B, one night, no rush:
Morning departure from Pune, Daulatabad fort en route, Verul by 3 pm.
Evening darshan and sandhya aarti, sleep at Verul or in Sambhajinagar.
Day 2: early darshan again if you wish, Ellora at 9 am, home by evening.
Plan B costs one hotel night and gives you both the temple and the caves without a night drive.
It also lets you take darshan twice, once at the evening aarti and once in the quiet of early morning, which is the way most regular Yatris do Verul. If you are also doing Bhimashankar and Trimbakeshwar, our 3 jyotirlinga circuit from Pune sets out the loop.
With elders: Plan B. Two 5-hour drives on separate days, and no 4 am start. See our 3 jyotirlinga guide for elderly parents for pacing.
On a budget: overnight bus or train to Sambhajinagar, MSRTC to Ellora, a lodge at Verul, and back the next evening. Well under ₹1,500 per head in fares.
On a tight schedule: Plan A by taxi, with a driver who is not you. Skip Daulatabad.
Avoid: Plan A on a Tuesday, when Ellora is shut, or in Shravan, when the darshan queue alone can take the hours you allotted for the caves.
For Plan B, sleep at Verul, where a handful of lodges and an MTDC property sit within a kilometre of the temple, or 30 km away in Sambhajinagar, which has far more hotels and restaurants. Verul suits an early darshan; the city suits families who want a proper dinner. Our night-by-night 3 jyotirlinga stay plan compares the two.
Give Grishneshwar the night it deserves, or the 4:30 am start it demands. Either way, Har Har Mahadev.
