Most Yatris passing through Pune only see a bus stand or a platform. A free evening or morning is enough to slip into the old Peshwa city instead — Shaniwar Wada and Aga Khan Palace both sit a short ride from Swargate, Shivajinagar and Pune Junction. Here is what fits into that gap.
Shaniwar Wada was the seat of the Peshwas from 1732 until an 1828 fire gutted its wooden interiors, so what stands today is mostly the fortified outer wall, the Delhi and Ganesh Darwaza gates, and the fountain courtyard. The complex is open 8:00 am to 6:30 pm every day.
A same-day counter ticket costs ₹5 for Indian visitors and ₹125 for foreigners; online ASI booking runs a little higher, around ₹20–25. Budget 45–60 minutes to walk the ramparts without rushing.
If your evening is genuinely free, the Marathi light-and-sound show runs 7:15–8:10 pm and the English show 8:15–9:10 pm, ticket ₹25, booking counter from 6:30 pm. Shaniwar Wada is about 2.3–2.5 km from Swargate ST stand — a 10-minute auto ride or a 25–30 minute walk past Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden.
Built in 1892, Aga Khan Palace is where Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai were held under British detention from 1942 to 1944; Kasturba's samadhi sits inside the palace garden. It opens 9:00 am to 5:30 pm daily, entry ₹25 for Indians and ₹300 for foreign visitors, with children under 15 admitted free.
The palace sits in Yerawada, roughly 7–8 km from the city centre and about 15–20 minutes by road from Shaniwar Wada. It suits a morning gap better than a last stop before an evening Shivajinagar or Swargate departure. Give the museum rooms and lawns about 45 minutes.
If your gap is under two hours, skip the two-palace circuit and stay close to where you're departing from. Pataleshwar Cave Temple, an 8th-century rock-cut Shiva shrine on Jangli Maharaj Road, is free to enter, open 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and barely 3 km from Pune Junction — walkable from Sambhaji Nagar metro station.
Parvati Hill Temple is another option: 103 steps, about a 10-minute climb, open 5:00 am to 8:00 pm, roughly 2.5 km from Swargate. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum (10:00 am–5:30 pm, ₹50 entry for Indian adults) and Vishrambaug Wada (roughly 10:00 am–5:00 pm, a token ₹5–20 entry) both sit inside the old city, a short ride from either stand.
Not every gap suits every sight — match the stop to the time you actually have and who's travelling with you.
Under 90 minutes free: stay near your departure point — Pataleshwar Caves from the station, or Parvati Hill and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden from Swargate.
A full morning before an evening bus: do Aga Khan Palace first since it shuts at 5:30 pm, then Shaniwar Wada on the way back into town.
Travelling with elders: Vishrambaug Wada and Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum are flatter and easier than climbing Parvati Hill's 103 steps.
On a tight budget: Pataleshwar Caves and Parvati Hill are free or near-free; skip the light-and-sound show if your bus timing is close.

Pune's Purple Line metro connects Swargate and Shivajinagar directly, with trains every 7–10 minutes and service until 11 pm; a single ride costs around ₹20. It's the fastest way to cross town without hunting for an auto.
An auto or cab between Shaniwar Wada and Aga Khan Palace takes about 15–20 minutes, and the same taxi can drop you back at your platform afterward. Avoid trying both palaces plus a station stop in under two hours — the lanes around Shaniwar Wada slow down fast on weekend evenings.
| Sight | Hours | Entry (Indian) | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shaniwar Wada | 8:00 am–6:30 pm | ₹5 | ~2.3 km from Swargate |
| Aga Khan Palace | 9:00 am–5:30 pm | ₹25 | ~7–8 km from city centre |
| Pataleshwar Caves | 8:30 am–5:30 pm | Free | ~3 km from Pune Junction |
| Parvati Hill | 5:00 am–8:00 pm | Free | ~2.5 km from Swargate |
| Raja Kelkar Museum | 10:00 am–5:30 pm | ₹50 | Old city, near Shaniwar Wada |
A short stopover works best when your hotel already sits near the sight you plan to see. A stay within a kilometre of Swargate keeps Shaniwar Wada, Parvati Hill and the Purple Line metro in easy reach; a Shivajinagar-area hotel instead puts Pataleshwar Caves and Pune Junction within walking distance.
Our area-by-area guide on where to stay in Pune for a temple trip covers both stands and the station in more depth.
A single free window before your bus or train is enough to touch Pune's Peshwa-era history without missing your departure. Plan around the shorter opening hours, book a taxi that waits, and the city will show you far more than a stand or a platform ever could. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
