Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar sit within a 65 km triangle on the Odisha coast, and three days is enough to do all of them properly. This plan covers Jagannath darshan rules, the Konark marine drive, Lingaraj timings, car costs and the Rath Yatra 2027 date.
Bhubaneswar is the gateway: Biju Patnaik airport and the main railway station are both here. Puri lies about 60–65 km south, and Konark is roughly 35 km east of Puri along the coast.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Bhubaneswar → Puri | ~60–65 km | 1.5–2 hrs |
| Puri → Konark (Marine Drive) | ~35 km | 45 min–1 hr |
| Konark → Bhubaneswar | ~65 km | 1.5–2 hrs |
A realistic plan looks like this:
Day 1 — Bhubaneswar. Lingaraj in the morning, Mukteshwar and the Udayagiri-Khandagiri caves after, then the drive to Puri via Dhauli. Sleep in Puri.
Day 2 — Puri. Mangala aarti or Sahana Mela darshan at dawn, Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar after lunch, Swargadwar beach in the evening.
Day 3 — Konark. Marine Drive early, Sun Temple before the heat, Chandrabhaga beach, then back to Bhubaneswar for an evening flight or train.
Shree Jagannath Mandir opens around 5 AM and closes late, around 10:30–11 PM, but the sanctum shuts for rituals through the day. Mangala aarti is the first window, and the free Sahana Mela darshan around 7–8 AM brings you closest to the deities without any pass. There is no VIP ticket here.
The rules are strict and enforced at all four gates:
No mobile phones, cameras or leather items inside. Free cloakrooms sit near Singhadwara and the north gate.
Dress code since 1 January 2024: no shorts, ripped jeans, sleeveless tops or skirts. Saree, salwar-kameez, kurta or formal trousers are fine.
Gutkha, paan and plastic are banned on the premises.
Non-Hindus cannot enter; the Raghunandan Library roof opposite Singhadwara gives a view of the Nilachakra.
Mahaprasad is sold only at Ananda Bazar inside the complex. Cooked rice, dal and curry appear around 1:30–3:30 PM; dry khaja sweets are available most of the day, from about ₹20 a pot.
Leave Puri by 7 AM. The 35 km Puri–Konark Marine Drive runs beside casuarina forest and the Bay of Bengal, and takes under an hour with no traffic.
The Sun Temple is an ASI monument, open 6 AM to 8 PM daily. Tickets cost ₹40 for Indians and ₹600 for foreign visitors; children under five enter free. Buy online on the ASI e-ticket portal in peak season to skip the counter queue.
Budget about two hours inside. The Interpretation Centre opposite the gate charges ₹30 and explains the chariot wheels before you see them. Chandrabhaga beach is 3 km east, best at sunrise.
The light-and-sound show runs twice each evening, roughly 6:30 and 7:30 PM in winter and 7:30 and 8:20 PM otherwise, for about 40 minutes and ₹30. Staying means driving back to Puri after dark.
Lingaraj Mandir is the reason to give Bhubaneswar a full morning. Darshan runs roughly 6 AM to 12:30 PM and again 3:30 to 9 PM; the doors close in between for Mahasnana, so a midday arrival wastes an hour. Entry is free; there is no online booking.
The complex holds more than 50 small shrines, so allow one to two hours. Photography inside is prohibited and non-Hindus use the viewing platform on the compound wall.
Within a few kilometres of Lingaraj:
Mukteshwar Mandir — the carved torana, open about 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM, free.
Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves — 8 AM to 5 PM, ₹25 for Indians, ₹250 for foreign visitors.
Dhauli Shanti Stupa — on the Puri road, 6 AM to 6 PM, a natural stop on Day 1 afternoon.
Trains between Bhubaneswar and Puri take about 1 hr 40 min to 2 hr 15 min, with a dozen daily services as a backup.
October to February is the comfortable season, with daytime temperatures around 17–28°C. April and May are brutally hot on the coast, and October–November carry cyclone risk, so watch forecasts if you travel then.
Rath Yatra 2026 was on 16 July, with Bahuda Yatra on 24 July; the 2027 cycle runs about eleven days earlier. During the festival everyone, including non-Hindus, can see the deities on the chariots on Grand Road.
Mistakes that cost people a day:
Arriving at Lingaraj or Jagannath between noon and 3 PM.
Carrying a phone to the Singhadwara queue and losing twenty minutes at the cloakroom.
Driving Konark in the afternoon and photographing the carvings against the glare.
Car hire with a driver from Bhubaneswar runs roughly ₹1,700–2,500 per day for a sedan and about ₹2,200–2,500 for an Innova, usually with an 80 km or 8-hour cap and ₹11–18 per extra kilometre. A one-way airport-to-Puri transfer is around ₹950–1,800.
If you have planned a similar three-stop circuit like Dwarka and Somnath from Ahmedabad, the logic is identical: one gateway city, one car, temples at dawn.
With elderly parents: three days, sleep two nights in Puri, Sahana Mela darshan at 7 AM, Konark by car and skip the caves.
On a budget: train to Puri, shared auto to the temple, a Puri–Konark round-trip cab for one day only.
On a tight schedule: two days, land early, Lingaraj and the drive on Day 1, Puri dawn darshan and Konark on Day 2.
Families with children: add Chandrabhaga beach and the light-and-sound show, and sleep one night in Konark.
Avoid a shared tour bus if darshan matters: they reach Puri mid-morning, after the quiet window has passed.
Puri is the natural base for two nights. Rooms within walking distance of Singhadwara make the 5 AM Mangala aarti painless, while Swargadwar and Marine Drive hotels suit families who want the beach. Prices start around ₹1,400 and climb sharply in Rath Yatra week, Kartik Purnima and the Christmas holidays.
Konark has a handful of hotels near the temple if you stay for the evening show. In Bhubaneswar, the Old Town near Lingaraj is quiet; the station area suits an early train.
Take darshan at dawn, drive the coast before the sun climbs, and the triangle fits easily into three days. Jai Jagannath.
