Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari fit into four days by road: Meenakshi Amman darshan on day one, the 22 theerthams and Dhanushkodi on days two and three, and the Kanyakumari sunrise on day four. The loop is roughly 730 km of driving, with the longest leg under six hours. This guide gives the real timings, fares and the order that works.
Start in Madurai: it has the airport, about 12 km from Meenakshi temple, and the main railway junction. The loop runs east to the island, south-west along the coast to the Cape, and back up NH44.
Day 1 – Madurai: land or arrive by train, evening darshan at Meenakshi Amman, night in Madurai.
Day 2 – Madurai to Rameswaram: about 173 km, roughly 3 hours. Cross the Pamban road bridge by noon, evening at Agni Theertham.
Day 3 – Rameswaram: 22 theerthams and darshan at dawn, Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai after lunch, night in Rameswaram.
Day 4 – Rameswaram to Kanyakumari: about 308 km on NH32, 5–6 hours. Reach by late afternoon for sunset.
Day 5 morning (optional): sunrise at the Cape, ferry to the Rock, then 245 km back to Madurai in 4–5 hours.
Many Yatris merge days 4 and 5, but that skips the sunrise. If sunrise matters, sleep one night in Kanyakumari and fly out of Madurai the next afternoon.
The temple opens in two sessions: 5:00 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Between 12:30 and 4 the gates are shut, so do not plan to arrive at lunchtime. Before 7 am the queues are short and the stone floor is still cool.
The dress rule is enforced at the gate. Men wear a dhoti or full trousers with a shirt; women wear a saree, salwar-kameez or anything covering shoulders and knees. Shorts, sleeveless tops and short dresses are turned away.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Morning session | 5:00 am – 12:30 pm |
| Evening session | 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm |
| Special darshan | about ₹50 per deity, ₹100 for both |
| Phones and cameras | not allowed inside; lockers near the gates, roughly ₹20–50 |
The special darshan ticket cuts a one-to-three-hour wait to under half an hour on busy days. Phones go into the locker, so fix a family meeting point at the East Gate.
Ramanathaswamy temple runs 5:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The ritual has three parts in a fixed order: a free sea dip at Agni Theertham by the east gate, the 22 wells inside, then the main darshan in dry clothes.
22 theertham ticket: about ₹25 per person, counter inside the temple.
Timing: from about 5:30 am until the midday closure, and again in the afternoon until early evening.
Time needed: 45 minutes on a quiet morning, up to two hours on weekends.
Spatika Linga darshan: 5:00 to 6:00 am, about ₹50, counter booking only, report by 4:30 am.
Quick darshan: about ₹200, bookable on the HR&CE portal.
Dress rules here are the strictest on this route: jeans and shorts are refused, and men doing abhishekam remove their shirt. Start the wells by 5:30 and you finish before the morning trains arrive.
Two bridges cross the Palk Strait. Cars use the 2.34 km Annai Indira Gandhi road bridge, opened in 1988, which runs beside the rail line. Trains use the new Pamban bridge, inaugurated on 6 April 2025, India's first vertical-lift sea bridge whose 72.5 m centre span rises 17 m for ships.
For the train crossing, the Madurai–Rameswaram passenger leaves around 6:10 pm and reaches the island about 10:30 pm. Most Yatris drive across and watch a train go over from the Pamban shore.
Dhanushkodi is about 20 km from the temple. The checkpost admits vehicles from 6 am to 5 pm, with no overnight stay. The last 4.5 km to Arichal Munai, where the two seas meet, is a shared van at roughly ₹150–200 per person. Kothandaramaswamy temple sits on the same road.
The sun rises between the two rocks at roughly 6:05 to 6:30 am from October to December; the viewing area fills by 5:45. October to February is the clear season; June to September brings cloud and ferry halts.
Poompuhar Shipping runs the ferry to Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar statue from 8 am to 4 pm, every twenty to thirty minutes. The regular ticket is about ₹100 return, VIP about ₹300, plus ₹30 memorial entry. Book online in season.
Bhagavathi Amman temple opens around 4:30 am to 12:15 pm and 4 pm to 8:15 pm; men enter without a shirt. Do darshan before the ferry, then the Rock, then the drive north.
These are ranges seen on booking sites in October 2026; budget with them, do not bargain with them. Package car quotes usually include fuel, tolls and driver allowance.
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Sedan, 4 days, full loop (~1,500 km with sightseeing) | ₹21,000 – 24,000 |
| Innova or similar SUV, 4 days | ₹25,000 – 28,000 |
| Tempo traveller, 4 days | ₹30,000 – 35,000 |
| Budget hotel near Meenakshi temple | ₹1,000 – 2,000 a night |
| TTDC Hotel Tamil Nadu, Rameswaram | ₹1,900 – 4,500 a night |
| 22 theertham + Spatika darshan | ₹25 + ₹50 |
| Vivekananda Rock ferry + entry | ₹130 regular, ₹330 VIP |
Two adults in a sedan with mid-range rooms land near ₹35,000–40,000 all in; six in a tempo traveller is cheaper per head. If you add Tirumala, its dress code and cloakroom rules differ again.
With elderly parents: take five days, buy the Meenakshi special darshan and Rameswaram quick darshan, and skip the shared van at Dhanushkodi; the walk is long and shadeless.
On a budget: take the overnight passenger train to Rameswaram, stay at TTDC, and hire a car only for the Rameswaram–Kanyakumari leg. Sleep in Kanyakumari and bus back.
On a tight schedule: three days work if you land in Madurai by noon, do evening darshan, and reach Kanyakumari on day three for sunset only.
With children: keep day 3 for the island; the wells, the van ride and the Pamban trains are the parts they remember.
Avoid: arriving at Meenakshi between 12:30 and 4, reaching Dhanushkodi after 4:30 pm, and the June–September monsoon when the Kanyakumari ferry halts.
In Madurai, stay within a kilometre of the temple so the 5 am session is a walk. Budget rooms near the East Gate start around ₹1,000 and mid-range hotels sit between ₹3,000 and 7,000.
In Rameswaram, TTDC Hotel Tamil Nadu is about 650 m from the temple, non-AC rooms from roughly ₹1,900. Lodges near the bus stand start near ₹1,300. In Kanyakumari, take a sea-facing room on the sunrise side and watch from the balcony.
Bathe in the wells at dawn, watch the sea meet itself at the Cape, and let one driver carry the rest. Har Har Mahadev.
