Datta Jayanti 2026 falls on Wednesday, 23 December, Margashirsha Purnima, and Akkalkot marks it with an eight-day utsav opening on Shukla Ashtami around 16 December. From Solapur it is a 38 km, roughly one-hour drive, so most Yatris go for the day. Here are the dates, the programme and the plan.
Datta Jayanti marks the birth of Bhagwan Dattatreya on Margashirsha Purnima. In 2026 the Purnima tithi begins about 10:47 am on Wednesday 23 December and ends around 6:57 am on 24 December, so the janmotsav is observed on the evening of the 23rd.
At Akkalkot it is not a single day. The Shri Vatavruksha Swami Maharaj Devasthan and the Swami Samadhi Math observe it from Margashirsha Shukla Ashtami to Purnima, eight days. Ashtami falls around 16 December 2026; the Devasthan confirms the exact programme a few weeks before.
| Day | Tithi | Date (approx.) | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shukla Ashtami | ~16 Dec | Utsav opens, parayan begins |
| 2–6 | Navami to Trayodashi | ~17–21 Dec | Daily kakad aarti, madhukari, vida, shej aarti |
| 7 | Chaturdashi | ~22 Dec | Crowd builds, walking dindis arrive |
| 8 | Purnima | 23 Dec | Datta Jayanti, janma sohala at dusk |
| — | Pratipada | 24 Dec | Palkhi procession, about 8 pm |
Through the utsav both shrines keep the same rituals. Kakad aarti is at 5 am, maha aarti and naivedya follow at noon, madhukari is observed as Swami did, and vida and shej aarti close the evening around 8 pm.
Many Yatris sit for a Shri Swami Charitra Saramrut parayan under the vatavruksha or at the Samadhi Math, reading 3, 7 or all 21 adhyays across the week. Others finish a Gurucharitra saptah on the Jayanti itself.
The day after the Jayanti, Swami's palkhi leaves the Vatavruksha Mandir about 8 pm, passes through the main streets to the Samadhi Math in Budhwar Peth, and returns around 9 pm, closing the utsav.
On an ordinary day the Vatavruksha Mandir keeps darshan from 6 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 9 pm, gates open 5 am to 10 pm. Our Akkalkot darshan timings guide covers the normal calendar.
On Datta Jayanti the trust extends these hours and relaxes the afternoon closure, but the general line still runs for several hours on 22 and 23 December. General darshan is free and needs no pass; a paid special-darshan line usually opens on busy days.
Walking dindi groups reach Akkalkot from across Maharashtra by the 22nd, and the lanes fill well before dusk on the 23rd. Leave footwear and bags at the gate counters; cameras stay out of the sanctum.
Akkalkot is about 38 km south-east of Solapur, a 45–60 minute drive. On 23 December traffic bunches up at the Akkalkot entry, so budget an extra half hour each way.
| Option | Time | Rough cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi | 45–60 min | See taxi block | Door to door, driver waits |
| MSRTC bus | 1–1.5 hr | About ₹65–100 | From Solapur Central stand, every 15–60 min |
| Train to Akkalkot Road | — | Low | Station about 11 km out, few trains |
MSRTC departures start about 4:15 am and 5:45 am, so a bus Yatri can make the 6 am opening. The bus drops at Akkalkot stand, a short auto ride from the mandir.
Trains are the wrong tool. Solapur Junction (SUR) is the gateway; Akkalkot Road is a lightly served halt, and a missed train there costs half a day.
The Shri Swami Samarth Annachhatra Mandal serves a free sit-down mahaprasad every day, and scales up for the utsav. Lunch runs from about 11:30 am to 3 pm, with maha-naivedya at noon; a dinner sitting follows the evening aarti, roughly 9 pm to 11 pm.
On the Jayanti the sittings stretch late and the dining-hall queue matches the darshan queue. Eat at the first sitting with elders. Our Akkalkot dress code and prasad guide explains how the hall works.
With elders or small children: go on 17–20 December, take darshan at 6 am, eat the first mahaprasad sitting and be back in Solapur by 3 pm. A taxi avoids the auto transfer at the bus stand.
On a budget: the 5:45 am MSRTC bus, free darshan and free mahaprasad keep the day under ₹200 a head.
On a tight schedule, wanting the Jayanti itself: leave Solapur by 1 pm on 23 December, hold a place near the vatavruksha for the dusk janma sohala, and return after shej aarti.
Wanting the palkhi: sleep in Akkalkot on the 23rd and watch the 8 pm procession on the 24th.
Avoid: arriving between 4 pm and 6 pm on 23 December, when roads and lanes are at their worst, and anything timed around a train at Akkalkot Road.
Weighing Akkalkot against Gangapur for the same date? Our Datta Jayanti 2026 at Gangapur guide covers that temple, about 105 km from Solapur on the same road.
The Annachhatra Mandal's Yatri Niwas and other Bhakta Niwas buildings sit within walking distance of the mandir. They offer 2, 3, 4 and 6-bed rooms, AC and non-AC, plus a dormitory, with hot water, parking and round-the-clock check-in. Tariffs run from a few hundred rupees to around ₹1,200 a night.
For Datta Jayanti these rooms go first. Book as soon as dates open, carry a government ID for every adult, and expect a one- or two-night limit during the utsav.
Solapur has far more hotel choice, an hour away by taxi. For a quiet night before a 6 am darshan, Solapur with an early start beats a dormitory on the 23rd.
Go early in the week for a quiet darshan, or on the 23rd for the janma sohala, but decide before leaving Solapur. Shri Swami Samarth.
