Bhimashankar is counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas. The legend is that Shiva rested here after defeating the demon Tripurasura, and the Bhima river is said to have sprung from his sweat — it rises at the temple, disappears into the forest and surfaces again a few kilometres east. The black-stone temple is built in the Nagara style and dates back to the 13th century; its sabhamandap and shikhara were added in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis, the Peshwa-era minister, who also built the well inside the complex. In 1985 the forest around the temple was declared the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the Indian giant squirrel (shekru), Maharashtra's state animal. Most yatris combine darshan with Gupt Bhimashankar, Hanuman Lake and Nagphani Point, all walkable from the temple.

The temple opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 9:30 PM. Darshan pauses briefly at 12:00 PM, 2:45 PM and 7:30 PM for worship. The temple has posted shorter construction-time hours in the past, so check shreebhimashankar.com before you travel.
About 110 km — roughly 3 hours by road via Rajgurunagar and Manchar. MSRTC buses run from Pune Shivajinagar. Pune Junction and Pune Airport are the nearest railway station and airport.
About 220 km, 5-6 hours by road. Trekkers also walk up from Khandas near Karjat, a full-day forest trek best done outside the monsoon.
Yes — a stepped path leads down from the parking to the temple, and back up after darshan. Elders should take it slowly; there are rest points along the way.
Mondays, Shravan Mondays, Mahashivratri and monsoon weekends, when the ghat road also jams. Weekday mornings are the easiest.
Gupt Bhimashankar (where the Bhima river resurfaces), Hanuman Lake and Nagphani Point are all on forest trails from the temple. The surrounding wildlife sanctuary is home to the Indian giant squirrel.
Staying overnight avoids driving the ghat road in the dark and lets you reach the 5 AM opening. TripSaffron lists checked stays with the real distance to the temple.
