Grishneshwar — "lord of compassion" — is counted as the twelfth of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the Shiva Purana. The legend is of Kusuma (Ghushma), a devotee who made and immersed 101 clay lingas every day; when her jealous co-wife killed her son, Kusuma kept up her worship, Shiva restored the boy, and at her request stayed here as the Jyotirlinga. The present red-basalt temple is 18th-century Maratha work: it was rebuilt in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and again in its current form by Ahilyabai Holkar after the Mughal period. Its five-tier shikhara and carved Dashavatara panels sit barely a kilometre from the Ellora Caves, so most yatris combine darshan with Ellora, Bhadra Maruti at Khuldabad and the Daulatabad fort in one or two days. Unlike most Jyotirlingas, devotees may enter the garbhagriha and touch the linga — men remove their shirts before entering.

Weekday mornings, especially at Kakad Aarti around 5:30 AM. Mondays, Saturdays, Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri carry the longest queues — up to several hours.
General darshan is free. A special quick-darshan pass is sold only at the temple counter; the rate varies by season, so confirm it on the day.
Stay in Verul itself, within walking distance of the temple, so you can make the 5:30 AM Kakad Aarti and see Ellora the same day. TripSaffron lists checked stays with the real distance to the temple.
