About this trip

Bhimashankar is 200 km from Shirdi, nestled in the Western Ghats at ~3,250 ft. The temple sits inside a wildlife sanctuary — the drive itself is worth the trip once you enter the Ghat section, with monsoon-lush hills and river valleys on both sides. The Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 sacred lingams, associated with Shiva's slaying of the demon Bhima. The temple has 200+ steps down to the sanctum (there's no lift), and the last 20 km of the drive is narrow ghat road — book an Ertiga or Innova over a Sedan for comfort. Because of the distance and hill road, this is the longest of the Shirdi day-trip packages. Start before sunrise; back by evening.

FAQs

Are the 200 steps a problem for elderly parents?

For anyone with knee issues or heart conditions, yes. The steps are steep and the descent-then-ascent is genuinely tough. Some yatris hire a doli (chair carried by porters) for elderly members — negotiate at the top before descending.

Can I see wildlife on the way?

The road passes through the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — home to the endangered Giant Squirrel. Sightings need patience and quiet stops; drivers know the good spots but this isn't a safari.

Is it safe to visit in monsoon?

The scenery is spectacular but the ghat road can be slippery and landslide-prone. If you visit June-September, add extra time to the drive and start even earlier. Avoid on heavy rain days.

Is there any special darshan option?

A ₹100 special darshan skips the main queue on busy days. Regular darshan is free but can add 45-90 min on weekends and Mondays (Shiva's day).
