Ambaji temple opens for darshan in three slots — 7:00–11:30 am, 12:30–4:30 pm and 6:30–9:00 pm — and from Ahmedabad it is about 185 km, 3.5–4 hours by road. Leave by 5 am, take the morning slot, ride Gabbar before lunch and be home by dinner.
Darshan is free and there is no paid or VIP queue. The temple shuts for an hour at midday and two hours before the evening slot; Friday to Sunday mornings are slowest. On a weekday you are through in 20–40 minutes.
| Slot | Time (Oct 2026 board) |
|---|---|
| Morning aarti | 7:30–8:00 am |
| Morning darshan | until 11:30 am |
| Afternoon darshan | 12:30–4:30 pm |
| Evening aarti | 7:00–7:30 pm |
| Evening darshan | until 9:00 pm |
The queue is shortest 8:00–9:30 am on weekdays and the 12:30 pm slot is the quietest of the day; the evening aarti draws the biggest crowd and the doors close sharp at 9. The trust shifts aarti by about an hour with the season, and Navratri hours are longer; our Navratri plan carries that schedule.
First-timers expect a murti and find none. Ambaji is the Shakti Peeth where Sati's heart is said to have fallen, and the garbha griha holds the gold-plated Shree Visa Yantra with 51 bijaksharas, set in a wall niche. The pujaris drape and crown it so it reads like a face; the shringar changes through the day.
Ambaji fills on every Poonam (full moon), and four become full melas: Bhadarvi, Aso, Kartik and Chaitra. The Bhadarvi Poonam mela of 20–26 September 2026 has just passed; the 2025 edition drew over 40 lakh Yatris, and this year the district laid out 38 parking areas.
Sharad Navratri, 11–19 October 2026 — nightly garba in Chachar Chowk and extended darshan; detail in our Navratri guide.
Sharad (Aso) Poonam, 25–26 October 2026 — the Purnima tithi runs from 11:55 am Sunday to 9:41 am Monday. Treat both days as mela days.
Kartik Poonam, Tuesday 24 November 2026 — Dev Diwali; a working-day Poonam is lighter, but the rush starts the evening before.
If your dates are flexible, pick a Tuesday to Thursday at least three days clear of a Poonam.
The road runs Ahmedabad → Mehsana → Palanpur → Danta → Ambaji, on NH 27 to Palanpur and then the state highway into the Aravalli foothills. The last 60 km are two-lane and crawl behind buses on a Poonam weekend.
Private taxi: 3.5–4 hours for about 185 km, breakfast halt at Palanpur.
GSRTC bus from Gita Mandir: about 5 hours, services through the day and night, fares from around ₹160–210.
Train to Abu Road (ABR): about 2 hr 50 min, then 20 km by shared jeep or taxi. Palanpur (PNU) is 65 km from the temple.
Every train option ends with a road leg; for a one-day trip only the taxi puts you in the 8 am queue and back for dinner.
Gabbar hill, 4–5 km from the main temple, is the original seat of the Devi, with the akhand jyot and footprints at the top.
The ropeway suits elders, children and anyone on the clock; the steps suit fit Yatris who want the parikrama feel. Climbing up and riding down on a one-way ticket of about ₹98 is the usual compromise for a mixed group, and the climb needs water, since the day is hot by 10 am.
| Ropeway | 999 steps | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | about 5 min; 363 m cable, 138 m rise | 45–60 min up, 30–40 min down |
| Cost | about ₹125 adult return, ₹70 child | Free |
| Hours | listed 7 am–7 pm; last cabin often by 4 pm | Daylight only |
A combined Girnar, Pavagadh and Ambaji ropeway ticket sells for roughly ₹900–975, valid 90 days — worthwhile only if you do all three in a season. The hilltop light-and-sound show was reported suspended through mid-2026; ride up by 11 am, when cabins are empty.
4:30 am — leave Ahmedabad; breakfast at Palanpur.
8:15 am — reach Ambaji, drop phones and bags at the locker counter.
8:30–9:45 am — darshan; mohanthal prasad from the trust counter.
10:00–11:30 am — Gabbar by ropeway; lunch in the bazaar and leave by 1 pm.
3:00 pm — Umiya Mata temple, Unjha, about 95 km south via Siddhpur.
4:00 pm — leave Unjha; Ahmedabad is 100 km, home by 6:30.
Umiya Mata at Unjha, kuldevi of the Kadva Patidars, is open roughly 6:30 am to 9:30 pm with evening aarti around 7:15; it costs an hour and sits on the way back.
With elders: taxi, morning slot, ropeway both ways; get dropped at the locker counter, not the parking lot.
On a budget: the late-night GSRTC bus reaches Ambaji before the 7 am doors; climb Gabbar on foot and return by an afternoon bus.
On a tight schedule: skip Unjha, do temple and Gabbar, and be back in Ahmedabad by 4 pm.
For Navratri or Poonam: stay the night before, using our two-day Ambaji–Mount Abu route; the best-time guide compares the months.
Avoid arriving at 11:15 am — the doors shut at 11:30 and the next slot is an hour away. Never leave Gabbar for the evening, and skip the Saturday before a Poonam.
A one-day trip needs no room, but a night in Ambaji pays off before a Poonam or Navratri day. Trust guest houses and dharamshalas around Chachar Chowk start from a few hundred rupees; anything within 500 m of the temple is gone two weeks before a Poonam.
Take the morning slot, let the Devi's shringar surprise you, and ride down Gabbar with the Aravalli at your feet. Jai Ambe Maa.
