Ahmedabad to Junagadh is about 315 km by road through Rajkot, 5.5 to 7 hours by car, and 6 to 7 hours by train or GSRTC bus. The choice comes down to one question: do you want to start the Girnar climb at 4 am the next morning? Here is how each option lines up against that.
The standard route runs Ahmedabad → Bagodara → Limbdi → Rajkot → Jetpur → Junagadh. Sources put it between 309 and 330 km, and 5.5 to 7 hours is the honest range once you add a meal and the Rajkot bypass.
Ahmedabad to Rajkot is about 215 km and 4 to 4.25 hours on its own. That stretch is being widened from four lanes to six in five sections between Ahmedabad and Rajkot, so expect diversions through 2026. Rajkot to Junagadh is another 100 km, about 1.5 hours on a good four-lane road.
The alternative through Bhavnagar and Amreli is roughly 390 km and noticeably slower. Take it only if Palitana or Bhavnagar is already on your list.
By car, leave Ahmedabad by 6 am to clear the city before traffic and reach Junagadh for a late lunch. An afternoon departure works too, but you then arrive after dark, which matters if you have not booked a room.
| Leg | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad → Rajkot | ~215 km | 4–4.25 hrs |
| Rajkot → Junagadh | ~100 km | ~1.5 hrs |
| Total via Rajkot | ~315 km | 5.5–7 hrs |
| Via Bhavnagar–Amreli | ~390 km | 7.5–8 hrs |
Two direct trains matter, and they suit two different plans.
22957 Somnath SF Express: departs Gandhinagar Capital 9:45 pm, calls at Ahmedabad Junction later that evening, reaches Junagadh at 3:58 am and Veraval at 5:45 am. Daily, with sleeper, 3A and 2A coaches.
19119 Gandhinagar–Somnath Intercity: departs Ahmedabad at 10:47 am and reaches Junagadh at 5:30 pm, then Somnath at 7:40 pm. Daily.
The overnight is the Girnar climber's train. You step off at 4 am, take an auto the 6 to 7 km to Bhavnath Taleti, and start the steps as the sky lightens. The intercity suits anyone spending the first night in Junagadh and climbing on day two.
We could not confirm current fares; expect sleeper somewhere in the low hundreds and 3A a few hundred more. Book on the official railway site, and check the Ahmedabad departure time of 22957 there, as only the Gandhinagar time was confirmed.
GSRTC runs Ahmedabad–Junagadh through the day and night, a 274 km bus route of about 6.5 hours. The cheapest express seat is around ₹242; AC and Volvo services start near ₹552. Sleeper listings at under ₹300 look like aggregator errors, so budget more.
Private operators run mostly overnight. Patel Tours lists departures between 9:45 and 11:15 pm from about ₹790, arriving before dawn, and Eagle runs a 6:30 am non-AC service around ₹600. For a climber, the 11 pm private sleeper works the same way as the overnight train.
Ahmedabad's GSRTC departures leave from Geeta Mandir; private buses pick up along the ring road and at Paldi. Confirm your pickup point when you book, because a wrong stop at 10 pm is a missed bus.
On the Junagadh side, buses arrive at the main ST stand in town, a short auto ride from both the station and the Taleti.
One-way taxi quotes for Ahmedabad to Junagadh cluster around ₹3,500 to ₹3,700 for a sedan, ₹4,700 to ₹4,800 for an SUV and ₹5,100 to ₹5,800 for an Innova, usually including tolls. Per-kilometre round-trip rates run ₹10 to ₹17 for a sedan and exclude tolls and parking.
Shared taxi seats exist informally at Rajkot and Jetpur, but we found no reliable published fare. Treat them as a fallback, not a plan.
Flying does not help much. Rajkot Hirasar airport is 130 to 142 km from Junagadh, 2 to 3 hours by taxi at ₹1,900 to ₹2,500. Keshod is only 38 to 40 km away but sees a handful of Alliance Air flights a week from Ahmedabad, so it only works if the day and time happen to fit.
Once in Junagadh, the station to Bhavnath Taleti is 6 to 7 km: an auto costs ₹80 to ₹150, a shared one ₹20 to ₹30. Our Girnar ropeway guide covers the cable car to Ambaji, which runs from about 8 am with a return fare near ₹630 in 2026.
With elders: the intercity train or a taxi, a night in Junagadh, and the ropeway to Ambaji the next morning. Skip the steps beyond Ambaji.
On a budget: GSRTC express at about ₹242, or the sleeper coach of the overnight train. Both put you in Junagadh for under ₹300.
On a tight schedule: overnight Somnath SF, climb at dawn, ropeway down, and the 5:30 pm intercity or a taxi back the same evening.
Climbing for Lili Parikrama: the 36 km parikrama around Girnar runs around 20 to 24 November 2026. See the Lili Parikrama guide and book transport weeks ahead.
Avoid: the day intercity if you intend to climb the same day. Arriving at 5:30 pm leaves no daylight for the steps.
Sleep in Junagadh near Bhavnath Taleti if the climb is the point, so the 4 am start is a short auto ride rather than a cross-town trip. Lodges around the Taleti and the Jain dharamshalas fill up during the Shivratri mela in February and the parikrama week in November.
If you are combining Girnar with Somnath and Dwarka, our full circuit from Ahmedabad lays out the nights.
Get the arrival right and Girnar gives you the sunrise. Jai Girnari, Jai Dattatreya.
