Diwali week 2026 at Bhimashankar runs from Saturday 7 to Sunday 15 November: Lakshmi Pooja on Sunday 8, Padwa on Tuesday 10, Bhaubeej on Wednesday 11. Maharashtra's schools are on holiday throughout, so every day behaves like a weekend. Plan darshan inside the 7–11 AM walk-in window and book a room before October ends.
Most Maharashtra panchangs and the state holiday list agree on the 2026 sequence: Dhanteras Friday 6 November, Lakshmi Pooja Sunday 8 November, Bali Pratipada (Padwa) Tuesday 10 November and Bhaubeej Wednesday 11 November. Narak Chaturdashi shares the morning of 8 November. A few calendars put Padwa and Bhaubeej a day earlier; check your own panchang.
The school break makes this week different from any other November week. We found no state-wide circular, but the school calendars we checked run from the first week of November to about 13–18 November, and the Bombay High Court is on vacation from 6 to 18 November. Expect families every weekday.
How the nine days behave at the temple:
Sat 7 Nov: homes are busy with Dhanteras shopping and cleaning. A good early-morning darshan.
Sun 8 Nov, Lakshmi Pooja: quiet morning; everyone wants to be home by evening.
Mon 9 Nov: Monday is Shiva's day and the first free day after Lakshmi Pooja. Busy.
Tue 10 Nov Padwa and Wed 11 Nov Bhaubeej: the peak. Family outings start, and Bhaubeej is a public holiday.
Thu 12 and Fri 13 Nov: the best weekdays of the break.
Sat 14 and Sun 15 Nov: the last weekend before most schools reopen. Heavy.
Bhimashankar was closed from 9 January 2026 for work on the sabha mandap and the approach stairway, and reopened on 15 June 2026. The trust used the restart to end VIP darshan, protocol entry and recommendation letters. Nobody can sell you a pass for Diwali week, and anyone offering one is not the temple.
At reopening, entry needed a free registration on shreebhimashankar.com, a photo ID and a cap of about 1,000 Yatris a day. Within weeks the rule was eased: Yatris arriving between 7 and 11 AM walk in without a booking. Registration is still there if you want a confirmation in hand, and it costs nothing.
During Shravan, 13 August to 11 September, the Collector's office extended hours to 5 AM–9:30 PM for the crowds. As of early October we could not confirm whether Diwali week gets the same extension, or whether a daily cap returns on holidays.
Plan for the four-hour window and treat anything longer as a bonus. Our guide to what replaced the VIP pass tracks the rule as it changes.
On an ordinary weekday the line after opening clears in 40 to 60 minutes. Weekends stretch it to 1–2 hours, and the 2026 Shravan Mondays, with footfall of two lakh and more, ran 2–3 hours. Diwali week has never matched Shravan, but Padwa and Bhaubeej behave like a strong weekend compressed into a four-hour window.
| Day | Expected wait at 7 AM | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 7 Nov | about an hour | Dhanteras keeps families at home |
| Sun 8 Nov | under an hour | Lakshmi Pooja evening |
| Mon 9 Nov | 1–2 hours | Shiva's day, first free day |
| Tue 10 – Wed 11 Nov | 2 hours or more | Padwa and Bhaubeej outings |
| Thu 12 – Fri 13 Nov | about an hour | Best weekdays of the break |
| Sat 14 – Sun 15 Nov | 1–2 hours | Last weekend before school |
Parking is the other queue. From the parking the temple is 500–700 m and 200–230 steps down, and on heavy days cars are held 2–6 km below the village with shuttles. On the Shravan Mondays the district ran four parking grounds and about 40 MSRTC buses between them and the stand.
No Diwali parking or shuttle order had been published when we checked. Assume the Shravan pattern on 10, 11, 14 and 15 November, and budget an extra 30–40 minutes for the shuttle and the steps. The queue and crowd guide has the hour-by-hour pattern for a normal month.
From Pune it is about 110 km and 3 to 3.5 hours: NH60 through Chakan, Rajgurunagar and Manchar, then SH54 through Ghodegaon and the last 40 km of ghat inside the sanctuary. Two toll plazas on NH60 cost roughly ₹100 one way. Parking near the steps is about ₹50 when you can get it.
The ghat took landslides in July 2026 on both the Manchar and Khed approaches and was cleared. By November the monsoon is over and the road is normally open, but the hairpins after Ghodegaon are unlit and have no shoulder. Leaving Pune at 3 AM puts you on the steps by 6:30, ghat still empty.
MSRTC runs about twelve buses a day from Shivajinagar (Wakdewadi), roughly hourly from 5 AM to 4 PM, fare around ₹185, 3 to 3.5 hours. Women pay half under Mahila Sanman. The 5 AM bus reaches the temple around 8:30, inside the window but behind the early queue.
The number to plan around is the last bus back, about 4:30 PM. MSRTC added extra Pune buses for Shravan 2026, and nothing had been announced for Diwali when we checked. Our MSRTC bus guide has the stop-by-stop route and the Manchar jeep option.
Bhimashankar is not a Diwali temple the way Pandharpur is a Kartiki one. The trust's big lamp festival is Tripuri Purnima on 24 November 2026, two weeks after Bhaubeej, when the temple is lit and stays open through the night for the Tripurasura legend.
We found no published Diwali-week programme from the trust; expect the regular morning abhishek and aarti cycle rather than a Deepotsav. If one is announced, it will appear on the trust site first.
Inside the 7–11 window you see the tail of the morning schedule. On the full-day timetable kakad aarti is at 4:30 AM and nijarup darshan around 5, both before the gates open to walk-ins.
If the extended hours return, the madhyan aarti around 3 PM closes the sanctum for about 45 minutes, and shej aarti is near 9:30 PM. Check on the day before planning around an evening aarti.
With elders: Thursday 12 or Friday 13 November, a taxi that waits at the top, and a doli for the steps, arranged on the spot for a few hundred rupees. Skip Padwa and Bhaubeej altogether.
On a budget: the 5 AM Shivajinagar bus on Saturday 7 or Thursday 12, back on the 2:30 or 4:30 PM. Under ₹400 for the day's travel.
On a tight schedule: a 3 AM taxi, darshan by 8, back in Pune for lunch.
A family with school-age kids: sleep in the village the night before, walk in at 7, and spend the afternoon on the sanctuary trails instead of the ghat road.
Avoid: reaching after 10 AM on 10 or 11 November, any "VIP pass" offer, and the 3 and 4 PM buses from Shivajinagar, which arrive after the last bus back has left.

There is no trust Bhaktniwas at Bhimashankar. The choice is the MTDC resort about 9.5 km below the temple, with a vegetarian restaurant and play area, or private lodges in the village at ₹1,200–2,500, most a short walk from the steps. Diwali week is a school holiday, so book in October, not November.
Sleeping in the village is the only way to be on the steps at 6:30 without a 3 AM start, and it leaves the afternoon free for the forest. Our stay guide for an early darshan lists the lodges by distance from the steps.
Pick a weekday inside the break, be on the steps before seven, and Diwali week at Bhimashankar is a cool-season darshan in the forest rather than a morning in a queue. Har Har Mahadev.
