Tripuri Purnima 2026 falls on 24 November, and at Bhimashankar it carries a weight it doesn't have at most other Shiva temples. This is the Jyotirlinga where the legend places Lord Shiva's slaying of the demon Tripurasura on this exact tithi.
That's why the temple stays open through the night rather than closing on its usual schedule.
Kartik Purnima is celebrated at Shiva temples across India, but Bhimashankar's version carries an extra layer: local tradition holds that Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, which gives the festival its name, happened at this very Jyotirlinga. That's not true of every Kartik Purnima celebration elsewhere.
The Purnima tithi begins around 11:42 PM on 23 November and runs until about 8:23 PM on 24 November by one panchang calculation — timings shift slightly by location, so treat this as the general window rather than a fixed clock time.
The legend behind the name is specific to this hill. Tripurasura, a demon who won near-invincibility from Shiva's own blessing, built three fortified cities and terrorised the three worlds, and it took Shiva and Parvati fifteen days of battle, from Kartika Pratipada to Kartika Purnima, to end him.
The exhausted gods are said to have rested afterward in this same forest, and the sweat from that effort is said to have formed the Bhima river that gives Bhimashankar its name. That's why the temple's origin story and this festival's date are tied together in a way few other Jyotirlingas can claim.
On Tripuri Purnima, Bhimashankar stays open through the night instead of following its usual 4:30 AM to 9:30 PM schedule. Special abhishek rituals run alongside the regular aarti cycle, and the temple is decorated with lights, flowers and flags for the occasion.
Midnight abhishekams and continuous chanting are typical of how the Sansthan marks its major festival nights here, Tripuri Purnima included. If you want the quieter version of this experience, the very early morning hours right after midnight tend to be calmer than the evening rush.
Bhimashankar is also known for its wildlife sanctuary, and it's worth resisting the pull to wander off the temple grounds into the forest on a festival night — the trails aren't lit, and that's a separate trip to plan for in daylight.
On a normal day, darshan runs in two windows — 6 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM — with a lighter, limited afternoon slot in between. On a major festival night like this, expect that structure to blur into continuous queuing rather than fixed slots.
Which plan suits you?
Want the full midnight experience — arrive by early evening on the 23rd, before the tithi begins, and expect to stay through the peak hours.
Prefer a shorter, calmer visit — aim for the pre-dawn hours after midnight, once the initial rush has thinned.
Traveling with elders — a same-week weekday darshan, a few days before or after the exact tithi, avoids the crowd without missing the season entirely.
Coming from Pune, it's about 110 km, roughly 2.5-3 hours, with the last 40 km climbing a narrow, winding ghat that shouldn't be rushed after dark. From Mumbai it's closer to 200 km, typically 4-5 hours once you're past city traffic and onto the ghat stretch.
Either way, arriving before nightfall makes the final climb far easier than doing it for the first time at midnight.
The widely-cited VIP darshan pass system for Bhimashankar was scrapped in 2026 — a separate guide on this site covers what queue-management options exist now, since the old ₹50-100 pass numbers you'll find elsewhere online are no longer accurate.
| Darshan window | Normal day | Tripuri Purnima night |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | 6 AM-12 PM | Continuous |
| Afternoon | 11 AM-4 PM (limited) | Continuous |
| Evening | 4 PM-9 PM | Continuous |
| Overnight | Closed | Open |
Don't assume a Tripuri Purnima night runs on the same fixed darshan windows as a regular day — the schedule blurs into continuous access, and queue behaviour follows crowd size more than the clock. Don't rely on outdated VIP pass information you find on generic temple-timing sites; check the current Bhimashankar-specific guide on this site instead.
Don't plan a same-day return trip late at night on unfamiliar ghat roads — arrange transport that's waiting for you rather than one you have to find at 2 AM.
