Dwarka and Somnath from Ahmedabad is a four-day loop of roughly 1,100 km: about 440 km west to Dwarka, 230–260 km down the coast to Somnath via Porbandar, and 410–420 km back. Four days covers Dwarkadhish, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Bet Dwarka and the Somnath evening aarti without rushing.
A fifth day adds Gir or a slower return. A private car for the whole loop runs from roughly ₹15,000 for a sedan, and both temples are free to enter.
Four days is the minimum that does not feel like a dash. Day one is almost entirely driving, days two and three are the temple days, and day four is the long return. Anything shorter means skipping Bet Dwarka or seeing Somnath only in daylight.
Five days is the comfortable version. The extra day usually goes to Sasan Gir for a safari, or to a second Somnath morning with the Triveni Sangam and Bhalka Tirth before a relaxed drive home. Elders travelling with you will thank you for it.
| Day | Route | Distance | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ahmedabad → Dwarka | ~440 km | 8–9 hrs |
| 2 | Dwarka → Nageshwar → Bet Dwarka → Dwarka | ~80 km | 2–3 hrs |
| 3 | Dwarka → Porbandar → Somnath | 230–260 km | 5–5.5 hrs |
| 4 | Somnath → Ahmedabad | 410–420 km | 7–8 hrs |
| 5 (optional) | Somnath → Gir → Ahmedabad | add ~100 km | split over two days |
October to March is the season. Summer afternoons on this coast are harsh, and the Somnath light-and-sound show is cancelled on heavy-rain evenings in the monsoon.
The road runs Ahmedabad → Limbdi → Rajkot → Jamnagar → Khambhaliya → Dwarka, about 440 km. Most cars do it in eight to nine hours with a breakfast stop near Limbdi and lunch around Jamnagar. Leave the city by 6 am and you reach Dwarka by late afternoon.
That timing matters because Dwarkadhish reopens at 5 pm after its afternoon closure and stays open until about 9:30 pm. Check in, walk to the temple for sandhya aarti, then watch the lamps on Gomti Ghat. The full daily schedule is in our Dwarkadhish darshan timings guide.
If you would rather not drive the first leg, the Saurashtra Mail (22945) leaves Ahmedabad at 5:05 am and reaches Dwarka at 1:10 pm. The Ahmedabad–Okha Vande Bharat does the same run in under six hours on six days a week; pick up a hired car at Dwarka station for the rest of the loop.
Start with mangla aarti at 6:30 am. The darshan window then runs to about 12:30 pm, though the garbhagriha is closed for abhishek between roughly 8 and 9 am. Leave phones, cameras and leather belts in the locker outside; none of them go in.
After breakfast head north on the Okha road. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is 17 km out, open roughly 6 am to 9 pm with no midday break, so it fits any time.
Another 15–20 km brings you to Okha and the bridge. The Keshavraiji temple on Bet Dwarka keeps an afternoon break, so aim to be there before 12:30 pm or after 5 pm.
Back in Dwarka by evening, stop at Rukmini Devi temple, about 2 km from the main shrine, and take a second Dwarkadhish darshan after 5 pm. If you want this day in more detail, see our one-day Dwarka, Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka plan.
Leave Dwarka by 8 am. Porbandar is 108 km, about two hours down the coast, and Kirti Mandir, Gandhiji's birthplace, is free to enter and takes an hour. Sudama Mandir is a short walk away.
From Porbandar to Somnath is about 156 km, three to three and a half hours. Lunch in Porbandar, and you arrive at Prabhas Patan around 4 pm with time to check in before the 7 pm sandhya aarti. The coastal road adds only a little distance over the inland route and is far more pleasant.
Somnath is open from 6 am to about 10 pm, with aartis at 7 am, 12 noon and 7 pm.
The evening before, stay on after the 7 pm aarti for the Jay Somnath light-and-sound show, which starts around 7:45–8 pm and runs about an hour. Tickets are sold on site and cost well under ₹100.
Electronics are strictly barred inside Somnath: phones, cameras, smartwatches, everything. The trust runs a free cloak room at the entrance, so keep your pockets light. More on sequence and queues is in our Somnath darshan, aarti and light show guide.
On day four take the 7 am aarti, then visit Triveni Sangam and Bhalka Tirth, both a short drive away.
Leave by 10 am for the 410–420 km, seven to eight hour drive back via Junagadh and Rajkot. Travelling by train instead, the Ahmedabad–Somnath Intercity covers 437 km in about nine and a half hours.
Car hire is the biggest line. Operators quote a four-day Ahmedabad–Dwarka–Somnath package from about ₹15,000–17,000 for an AC sedan and ₹18,500–24,000 for an Innova, usually with a 200 km per day minimum and driver charges included. Per-kilometre quotes run ₹9–12 for a sedan and ₹12–19 for an Innova Crysta.
| Item | Verified range |
|---|---|
| 4-day AC sedan, all-inclusive | ₹15,000–17,000 |
| 4-day Innova / Crysta | ₹18,500–24,000 |
| Dwarka dharamshala room | ₹500–900 per night |
| Dwarka AC hotel room | ₹1,200–2,000 per night |
| Somnath Trust 2-bed room | ₹1,000 non-AC, ₹1,300 AC |
| Somnath Sagar Darshan guest house | ₹4,400–6,000 |
| Temple entry, both shrines | free |
| Light-and-sound show | under ₹100 |
Darshan itself is free at both temples. Lockers at Dwarkadhish are free or a nominal ₹20–40, and the Somnath cloak room costs nothing. For a family of four, ₹30,000–40,000 all-in for four days is realistic.
Elderly parents: take five days, book Sagar Darshan or a hotel near Dwarkadhish, and skip the 6:30 am mangla for a 9:30 am shringar darshan.
Families with children: the Sudarshan Setu footpath and Somnath light show are the highlights; keep day one's drive broken with two long stops.
Tight on leave: four days, Saurashtra Mail out, car from Dwarka, Intercity back from Veraval.
Budget groups: dharamshalas in Dwarka and the trust rooms at Somnath halve the hotel bill.
The classic mistake is arriving in Dwarka at 1 pm to find the temple shut until 5. The second is reaching Somnath after dark and missing the show, which does not run on heavy-rain nights. If you want to extend to Girnar, our Dwarka, Somnath and Girnar circuit shows how.
In Dwarka, stay within walking distance of Dwarkadhish so the 6:30 am aarti needs no car. Dharamshalas near the temple run ₹500–900, non-AC hotel rooms ₹800–1,200 and AC rooms ₹1,200–2,000. Book ahead for Janmashtami and Kartik Purnima.
At Somnath the trust's Lilavati and Maheshwari Atithi Bhavans are a few minutes' walk from the temple, with 2-bed rooms from ₹1,000. Sagar Darshan, facing the sea beside the temple, is the premium option at ₹4,400–6,000 and sells out first on weekends.
Plan the four days around the temple clocks rather than the odometer and both shrines will meet you unhurried. Jai Dwarkadhish, Har Har Mahadev.
