If your flight or train reaches Indore in the evening or at night, you can still sleep in Ujjain the same night: it is about 55 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by road. The real question is timing — which trains are left, whether your hotel will open its door, and what the next morning at Mahakaleshwar holds.
Indore airport (Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, code IDR) is about 8 km from Indore Junction, roughly 25 minutes by road. That matters, because every train and nearly every bus to Ujjain starts from the city side, not from the airport.
A late arrival has three real choices:
A taxi straight from the airport or station to your Ujjain hotel, at any hour.
A train from Indore Junction (INDB) to Ujjain Junction (UJN), if the timing matches.
A bus from the city bus stands, which is a daytime and early-evening option.
Buses on this road are frequent through the day but thin out late in the evening. We could not confirm a dependable last departure, so do not build a night arrival around one.
These are the trains listed as running daily on the timetable we checked on 12 October 2026.
| Train | Leaves Indore Jn | Reaches Ujjain Jn |
|---|---|---|
| 12415 Indore–New Delhi Express | 5:10 pm | 6:25 pm |
| 12962 Avantika Express | 5:45 pm | 6:50 pm |
| 59307 Indore–Ujjain Passenger | 6:00 pm | 8:05 pm |
| 19315 Virbhumi Express | 6:20 pm | 7:28 pm |
| 19310 Shanti Express | 11:00 pm | 12:15 am |
| 19303 Indore–Bhopal Express | 11:15 pm | 12:40 am |
A few more trains leave between 7:50 pm and 10:20 pm, but only on certain days of the week. The catch is the gap: after 6:20 pm, the next daily train is at 11 pm.
Land at 7 pm on the wrong weekday and you wait four hours for a train that reaches after midnight. Check that day's running on the railway enquiry app before you count on it.
Ujjain Junction is about 2 to 2.5 km from Mahakaleshwar. Autos are easy to find in the evening and scarce after midnight.
Decide by the time you reach Indore.
| You reach Indore | Best plan | First darshan |
|---|---|---|
| Before 5 pm | Straight to Ujjain | The same evening |
| 5 pm to 8 pm | Straight to Ujjain | Late evening, or next morning |
| 8 pm to 11 pm | Straight to Ujjain, hotel told in advance | Next morning, from about 6 am |
| After 11 pm, no pass | Sleep in Indore, leave by 6 am | About 8 am |
| After 11 pm, with a Bhasma Aarti pass | Straight to the temple area | The 4 am aarti |
Going straight has one clear advantage: you wake up a short walk or auto ride from the temple, and the whole morning is yours.
Staying in Indore only wins when you land so late that the night in Ujjain would be three hours long anyway. In that case sleep properly, start at 6 am and you are in the darshan queue by about 8 am.
Mahakaleshwar's day gives a late arrival more room than most Yatris expect.
Regular darshan opens to everyone at about 6 am, once Bhasma Aarti ends.
The temple stays open till about 11 pm.
On ordinary weekdays the free queue takes 30 minutes to about 3 hours.
The shortest weekday queues are reported between 9 and 11 am and after 8 pm.
Sheeghra Darshan, the faster lane, costs ₹250 per person.
So a Yatri who reaches Ujjain by 9 pm on a weekday can often take darshan the same night, in the after-8 pm lull. Our darshan timings and tickets guide explains each queue.
Mondays and festival days are different: the wait can run to several hours. On those days, sleep first and join the line early in the morning. Mahakal Lok stays open till about 10 pm, so it also fits an evening arrival.
The pass fixes your whole night, so work backwards from it.
The aarti runs 4 to 6 am, every day.
The gate opens about 3 am for pass holders only; be there by 2:30 am.
Carry the printed confirmation and the original photo ID with the same name.
Men wear a dhoti and women a saree; phones go to the cloakroom.
Slots open about 30 days ahead on the temple's official portal.
To stand at the gate at 2:30 am, you must leave Indore by 1 am at the latest. Landing at 10 pm, go straight to Ujjain, check in and rest for two or three hours.
The calmer plan is to book the pass for your second morning, not the first. Then a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full steps are in our Bhasma Aarti booking guide.
With elders or small children: take a taxi straight to Ujjain if you land before 11 pm, and keep Bhasma Aarti for the second morning.
On a budget: catch a train before 6:20 pm, or the 11 pm Shanti Express and a hotel near Ujjain Junction.
With only one day: reach Ujjain at night, take darshan at 6 am, and continue to Omkareshwar on the two-Jyotirlinga plan from Indore.
Two things to avoid:
Hunting for an auto outside Ujjain Junction at 12:40 am with luggage and tired family.
Paying for a non-refundable Ujjain room before the hotel confirms late check-in.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026; Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali fall on 24 November 2026. Expect longer queues and fuller hotels around both.
Monday is the busiest day of any week.
November nights in Ujjain drop to about 16°C; December and January nights to about 11–13°C.
A 2:30 am wait at the gate in December is cold. Carry a shawl, and for elders a thin cushion for the two hours of floor seating.
Pick the hotel by what the morning holds.
For Bhasma Aarti or a 6 am darshan: stay within about 1 km of Mahakaleshwar, so the pre-dawn walk is short.
If you come by the 11 pm train: a hotel near Ujjain Junction saves a midnight auto search.
If you sleep in Indore: stay near the airport or the station, so a 6 am start is easy.
Whichever you choose, tell the hotel your arrival time in writing.
Land late, sleep well, and stand before Mahakal with a fresh mind in the morning. Jai Shri Mahakal — Har Har Mahadev.
