Fly into Indore and two Jyotirlingas and the Narmada ghats of Maheshwar are within two hours. The loop that works is Indore → Ujjain → Omkareshwar → Maheshwar → Indore, about 400 km, comfortable in 3 days and generous in 4. Here is the order, the day plan, the timings and the cost.
Ujjain sits 55 km north of Indore airport; Omkareshwar and Maheshwar sit south, on the Narmada. Going north first means your Bhasma Aarti alarm rings on your first night, when you are freshest, and the southern leg becomes a gentle loop back to the airport.
The drive times are short but they add up. Budget these, door to door:
Indore airport → Ujjain: 55 km, 1.5–2 hours on the four-lane NH-52.
Ujjain → Omkareshwar: about 140 km via Indore, 3.5–4 hours.
Omkareshwar → Maheshwar: about 66 km on SH-38, 1.5–2 hours.
Maheshwar → Indore airport: about 95 km, 2–2.5 hours.
Reversing the loop works too, but Maheshwar's sunset aarti is a better last evening than a 3 AM temple queue. If you have already read our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide, the middle leg is the same road.
Three days is enough if your flight lands before noon on day one and leaves after 6 PM on day three. Four days adds a slow Omkareshwar parikrama and a Maheshwar morning. Here is the plan most Yatris follow:
| Day | Where you sleep | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ujjain | Land, drive to Ujjain, Mahakal Lok, Kaal Bhairav, Sandhya aarti |
| 2 | Omkareshwar | Bhasma Aarti 4 AM, breakfast, drive south, evening darshan on the island |
| 3 | Maheshwar (4-day) or fly out | Morning darshan, boat to see the Om shape, Maheshwar fort and ghat aarti |
| 4 | Home | Rehwa looms at 10 AM, Sahastradhara, airport by afternoon |
On the 3-day version, leave Omkareshwar by 10 AM on day three. That gives you the Maheshwar fort by noon and the airport by 5 PM, with the ghats seen in daylight rather than at aarti.
Bhasma Aarti runs 4 AM to 6 AM daily and is the one thing on this trip that sells out. Online booking opens on the temple portal 30 days ahead at 8 AM, with an ID upload for every name. A tatkal quota opens one day prior.
Reporting is painful but non-negotiable:
Gate 4 opens around 3 AM; be inside by 3:30 AM.
Men wear a dhoti and no shirt inside the garbhagriha area; women a saree.
Phones and bags go in the locker; carry only the printout and ID.
If you miss the aarti, Sheeghra Darshan at ₹250 runs 6 AM to 8 PM in 16 slots and takes under an hour. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through the portal screen by screen.
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga stands on Mandhata island, reached by a footbridge from the town side. Darshan runs 5 AM to 12:20 PM, then 1:15 to 4 PM, then evening 4:30 to 9:30 PM. Arrive around 4 PM for the evening queue and you avoid the mid-morning bus crowds.
The island parikrama is about 7 km, 2.5–4 hours on foot, and is the reason to take the 4-day plan. The 108-foot Adi Shankaracharya statue at Ekatma Dham is free, open 10 AM to 6 PM. VIP darshan at the main temple is around ₹300 per person.
Maheshwar is where the trip slows down. Ahilya Fort sits directly above the Narmada ghats, open roughly 8 AM to 6 PM, with the Rajwada museum inside closing around 5 PM. Entry to the fort and the ghats is free; a guide at the gate is optional.
Plan the afternoon in this order:
Ahilyeshwar temple and the Rajwada inside the fort, an hour at most.
Rehwa Society looms, 10 AM to 6 PM, where Maheshwari sarees are woven on pit looms; good pieces start around ₹3,500.
Boat to Baneshwar, the mid-river Shiva shrine, about ₹200–400 per boat.
Narmada aarti at the ghat, usually 7–8 PM after sunset.
Sahastradhara, where the river splits over rock shelves, is 15 minutes out of town and best at sunrise on day four.
Outstation cars from Indore are priced per km with a 250 km per day minimum, plus a driver allowance of roughly ₹250–500 a day and tolls as actual. For a 3-day loop you will be billed on about 750 km.
| Item | Typical range (2026) |
|---|---|
| Sedan (Dzire), round trip | ₹9.5–10 per km |
| Ertiga / Carens | ₹14–15 per km |
| Innova Crysta | ₹16–18 per km |
| 12-seater tempo traveller | ₹22–25 per km or ₹4,500–5,500 a day |
| Airport → Ujjain one-way drop | ₹1,500 sedan, ₹2,300 Innova |
| Sheeghra Darshan, Mahakal | ₹250 per person |
| Rooms per night, Omkareshwar | ₹1,500–2,000 off-season, ₹3,000–4,000 in Shravan |
A family of four in a sedan should expect roughly ₹8,000–10,000 for the car over three days, before rooms. Shravan (July–August) and Mahashivratri double hotel rates everywhere on this loop.
With elderly parents: take 4 days, skip the parikrama, book Sheeghra Darshan instead of the 3 AM aarti, and ask for a room near Mahakal Lok so the walk is short.
On a budget: a sedan on the per-km rate, dharamshala rooms in Omkareshwar, and the free Rehwa and fort visits keep the trip under the cost of one hotel night elsewhere.
On a tight schedule: 3 days, Bhasma Aarti on night one, evening darshan at Omkareshwar, and Maheshwar seen in daylight on the way to the airport.
Families with children: 4 days; the boat rides at both Omkareshwar and Maheshwar are the parts kids remember.
Mistakes to avoid: landing in the evening and attempting Bhasma Aarti the same night, driving Ujjain → Omkareshwar in the dark, and arriving at Maheshwar after 6 PM expecting the fort to be open. Our Ujjain to Indore guide covers the train and bus options if you drop the car for the first leg.
Sleep in Ujjain on night one, within a kilometre of the temple, so the 3 AM walk is short. Hotels near Mahakal start around ₹1,000 a night and climb sharply on Mondays and festival weeks.
Omkareshwar has budget rooms from ₹500–1,200 and mid-range at ₹1,500–2,000 off-season; book ahead in Shravan. Maheshwar's rooms run about ₹1,000–2,000, with a heritage option inside the fort for a special night. Indore itself is only needed if your flight leaves before 9 AM.
Three Shiva darshans and a sunset on the Narmada in three days is a trip you will talk about for years. Har Har Mahadev.
