Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km — a 3.5-to-4-hour drive via NH52-Indore-Barwah. It's the most popular pairing after a Mahakaleshwar darshan because Omkareshwar is the 4th of the 12 Jyotirlingas — making it a natural two-Jyotirlinga yatra. This guide covers all transport options, a same-day itinerary, and what to see at Omkareshwar.
Distance — 139-160 km depending on route (Indore-Barwah is shortest at ~140 km)
Driving time — 3.5 to 4 hours by private taxi
Route — Ujjain → Indore (NH52, 57 km) → Barwah (NH47, 60 km) → Omkareshwar Mandhata Island (23 km)
Roads — mostly 4-lane highway till Barwah, then a 2-lane state road to Omkareshwar. Generally in good condition; monsoon can slow the last stretch.
Round trip cost — ₹3,500 to ₹5,500 (Sedan / Ertiga; fuel + tolls typically included)
Total time — 8-9 hours door to door with 3-4 hours at Omkareshwar
Best for — groups of 4-7, families with elders, anyone who wants flexibility to stop at Indore for lunch or Maheshwar on the return
Booking — book locally in Ujjain, or through TripSaffron for a fixed-fare vetted operator
MP Tourism / MP SRTC and private buses run Ujjain → Indore → Omkareshwar with a change at Indore Sarwate stand
Total cost — ₹250-400 one way per person
Total time — 5-6 hours one way; not practical as a same-day round trip
Best for — solo Yatris, backpackers, budget-conscious travellers who plan an overnight in Omkareshwar
No direct train — Ujjain–Omkareshwar is not on a single route
Options — Ujjain → Khandwa (~5 hrs) or Indore → Khandwa → Omkareshwar Road (~1.5 hrs from Khandwa)
Not practical for a day trip; only relevant if you're already on a train route
Omkareshwar sits on Mandhata Island in the Narmada river, shaped like the Om syllable — hence the name. Two temples matter:
Shri Omkar Mandhata (Jyotirlinga) — the primary Jyotirlinga on the island; darshan takes 45 min - 2 hours
Mamleshwar Mandir — believed by some traditions to be the actual Jyotirlinga; on the mainland across the bridge
Devotees traditionally take darshan of both. Panchamukhi darshan (5 daily aartis) happens through the day: 5 AM, 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 4 PM and 8:30 PM. The 8:30 PM Shayan Aarti at Omkareshwar is spectacular — the deity is offered a decorated bed.
3:30 AM — Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (if pre-booked ₹200 slot)
6:15 AM — Out of Mahakaleshwar; quick prasad at temple counter
7:00 AM — Depart Ujjain by private taxi (breakfast en route at Indore)
10:30 AM — Arrive Omkareshwar Mandhata Island; deposit shoes
11:00 AM – 1:30 PM — Omkar Mandhata Jyotirlinga + Mamleshwar darshan + Narmada snan
1:30 – 2:30 PM — Lunch on the mainland
2:30 PM — Depart Omkareshwar
6:00 PM — Back in Ujjain
Alternative — skip Bhasma Aarti and do a relaxed 8 AM start; back by 8 PM.
If your yatra has an elder in the group or you want to do the 5 AM Panchamukhi aarti at Omkareshwar, an overnight is worth it. Options in Omkareshwar are modest (dharamshalas + a handful of hotels); most families do it as a day trip from Ujjain and stay near Mahakaleshwar.
If you have a spare day, add Maheshwar (~65 km from Omkareshwar) — Ahilyabai Holkar's riverfront fort on the Narmada. A 2-day Ujjain-Omkareshwar-Maheshwar loop is one of Madhya Pradesh's finest short circuits.
Two Jyotirlingas in one day is one of Madhya Pradesh's most rewarding short yatras. Book a taxi that includes the 3-4 hour wait at Omkareshwar, start early after your Mahakaleshwar darshan, and you'll be back in Ujjain by dinner. Har Har Mahadev! 🚩
