Two days and one night are enough to take darshan at both Madhya Pradesh Jyotirlingas from Indore. Go to Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain on Day 1, sleep in Ujjain, and take Omkareshwar on Day 2 on the way back to Indore. The whole loop is about 290 km, and you are back in Indore by late afternoon.
The three points make a triangle. Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km north. Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km, and the road passes back through Indore. Omkareshwar to Indore is about 80 km.
Going to Ujjain first gives you three clear gains:
A short first day. You land or get off the train, and the temple is about 1 hour 15 minutes away.
The night falls in Ujjain, which is where the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti happens.
The trip ends close to Indore. After Omkareshwar you are about 2 hours 15 minutes from the airport, not 3.5 hours.
Done the other way round, you would finish at Mahakaleshwar and then drive back to Indore for your flight with no room for a long queue.
This is the clock our 2-day Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar package follows. It can shift to match your arrival.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9:00 AM | Pickup in Indore |
| 10:15 AM | Reach Ujjain, check in to your hotel |
| 11:30 AM | Mahakaleshwar darshan, then Mahakal Lok |
| 2:00 PM | Lunch |
| 3:00 PM | Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath temples |
| 5:00 PM | Harsiddhi Mata Temple |
| 6:30 PM | Evening aarti at Ram Ghat on the Shipra |
Keep about 2 hours for Mahakaleshwar, because the queue sets the time. General darshan is free. A Sheeghra Darshan ticket of about ₹250 per person gives a shorter line; our darshan timings and tickets guide explains the counters.
Kal Bhairav is about 7 km from Mahakaleshwar and Mangalnath about 6 km. Harsiddhi is only about 500 metres away, and Ram Ghat about 1 km. Mahakal Lok has no entry fee and is lit after sunset, so many Yatris walk it again after the aarti.
The Bhasma Aarti happens around 4 AM, and entry is only with a pass booked ahead through the temple. Nobody else can sell it to you. Seats fill early, so book the pass before you book anything else. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide has the steps.
With a pass, your Day 2 changes in two ways:
You report at the temple well before dawn, so sleep early on Day 1.
You leave for Omkareshwar at about 7:30 AM instead of 6:30 AM.
Tell us when you book, and the car takes you to the temple before dawn.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 6:30 AM | Check out and leave Ujjain |
| 10:00 AM | Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan on Mandhata island |
| 12:00 PM | Mamleshwar Temple and the Narmada ghat |
| 1:00 PM | Lunch |
| 2:00 PM | Drive to Indore |
| 4:15 PM | Drop at airport, station or hotel |
The drive from Ujjain takes about 3.5 hours. The Jyotirlinga stands on an island in the Narmada. You cross on foot by a bridge, or by boat from the ghat, with the boat ticket paid there.
Mamleshwar Temple is on the south bank, the side where the car is parked. Many devotees count the Jyotirlinga darshan as complete only after both temples. There are steps at the ghats and up to the main temple, so give elders extra time.
Indore airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. The airport is about 55 km from Ujjain.
Arriving on Day 1: a morning arrival fits the 9:00 AM pickup. If you land later, the plan slides and the outer temples move to a shorter round.
Leaving on Day 2: the drop is at about 4:15 PM. Book a flight or train that leaves after about 7:00 PM.
By train: Indore Junction is a pickup and drop point too.
Road work is under way on both highways, the Indore–Ujjain stretch and the hill section towards Omkareshwar. That is why the evening margin matters.
Both temples are busiest on Mondays. In the coming weeks, plan extra time around these dates:
Diwali — 8 November 2026, and the holiday week around it.
Kartik Purnima — 24 November 2026, a major bathing day on both the Shipra and the Narmada.
On such days, start Day 2 earlier and keep the later evening departure. October to February is the comfortable season for this route, with cool mornings; carry a light woollen for the pre-dawn hours.
With elders: take the 2 days as written. Skip the boat if the ghat steps are a worry and use the bridge.
On a tight schedule: drop Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath on Day 1 and rest for an early start.
With a Bhasma Aarti pass: keep the 7:30 AM departure and a flight after 8:00 PM.
With a third day free: add Maheshwar, a temple town on the Narmada about 65 km from Omkareshwar.
Avoid doing both Jyotirlingas in a single day from Indore. It is about 290 km of road with two queues, and one long line breaks the plan.
The night halt is in Ujjain, and you choose your own hotel. Pick one within walking distance of Mahakaleshwar. Day 2 starts at 6:30 AM, and a Bhasma Aarti morning starts far earlier.
Rooms near the temple fill first on Mondays and festival dates, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Our Mahakaleshwar logistics guide explains the gates and the walking routes.
Two Jyotirlingas, one night in Mahakal's city and a morning on the Narmada make a complete yatra in a single weekend. Har Har Mahadev.
