Sai Baba’s Dhuni — Why It Still Burns Today

Inside Dwarkamai, in one corner, a sacred fire burns — and has for over 160 years, without going out for a single moment. This is the very dhuni Sai Baba lit with his own hands. But it doesn’t burn simply because “Baba lit it”. There’s a deeper meaning behind it — one Baba explained himself. 🪔

Burning since when?
Baba lit it himself in 1858. Not a single moment since has it gone out.
Why did Baba light it?
To teach vivek (discernment) — this body, too, will one day be ash like this.
What is Udi?
The dhuni's sacred ash — Baba's blessing to every devotee.

🔥 Why Baba lit the dhuni

When someone asked Baba, “Why do you keep this fire?”, he said it was to teach vivek — discernment.

Baba’s message was direct: this body, too, will one day become ash like this. With every passing moment we move closer to our end. So while life lasts, pay attention to your actions. That is the dhuni’s real lesson.

🌾 Baba’s bond with the dhuni

Every morning Baba went into the village to beg for alms — from five fixed houses. Whatever food he received, he first offered to the dhuni, then ate himself.

Once, the dhuni’s flames rose so high they began to reach the roof. The devotees in Dwarkamai were frightened — but no one dared say anything. Baba sensed their fear at once. He struck the ground with his satka (staff) and ordered the flames to calm. With each strike the flames lowered. Within moments the dhuni returned to normal.

🤲 Udi — the prasad of the dhuni’s ash

The ash of this dhuni is called Udi. Baba gave Udi to every devotee who came to him — as a blessing.

The Satcharitra holds countless stories where Udi healed the sick, saved families, turned impossible situations around. Baba never called it “miraculous” — for him it was simply a symbol of faith and vivek. To this day the Sansthan collects Udi twice a day in the temple complex and distributes it to devotees.

🕊️ Why it still burns today

After Baba took mahasamadhi in 1918, the Sansthan resolved that the dhuni would never go out. Fresh wood has been added every day since. Not one night has passed without that fire burning.

It isn’t just a tradition — it’s a living symbol of Baba’s presence. When you visit Dwarkamai, pause, fold your hands before the dhuni, and remember what Baba wanted to say:

This body will one day be ash. Until then — learn to live with vivek.
