Vaikunta Ekadashi 2026 at Tirumala is currently expected on Sunday, 20 December 2026, opening a ten-day Vaikunta Dwaram window through 29 December. This is the day Lord Venkateswara's own gate to moksha is said to open, drawing crowds heavier than almost any other day at Tirumala. Here's how the token system, the Dwaram window, and the queues actually work.
Vaikunta Dwara Darshan is entry through Lord Venkateswara's own Vaikunta Dwaram, opened only once a year. For the first three days — 20, 21 and 22 December — entry needs a token booked in advance through TTD's e-DIP system on the official portal, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in.
From 23 to 29 December, anyone without a token can still pass through the Dwaram, but only via the regular Sarva Darshan free queue line, which runs far longer during festival week. No separate registration is needed for these days — you simply join the queue.
| Darshan Option | Available Days (2026) | How You Enter | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vaikunta Dwara Darshan (token) | 20–22 Dec | e-DIP token booked online | Free |
| Sarva Darshan (free queue) | 23–29 Dec, and year-round | Walk-in queue line | Free |
| Special Entry Darshan (SED) | Daily, including festival week | ₹300 ticket | ₹300 |
If you've never queued for Sarva Darshan before, our Tirupati Balaji darshan timings guide breaks down typical wait hours and what to carry — worth reading before festival week, when everything moves slower.
TTD typically keeps the Vaikunta Dwaram open for ten days around Ekadashi, not just on the festival date itself. In 2026 that window is expected to run from 20 through 29 December, though TTD's own circular, usually released 4-6 weeks ahead, is the final word.
The first three days (20-22 Dec) see the heaviest rush since only e-DIP token holders enter through the Dwaram in fixed batches. From day four onward, the crowd thins slightly as the Dwaram opens to the general Sarva Darshan line, though queues still run far longer than a normal week.
Mukkoti Ekadashi rituals and deepotsavam typically continue through the full ten days, so even a visit on day 8 or 9 still catches temple festivities — with a shorter wait than day one.
Vaikunta Ekadashi ranks among Tirumala's heaviest-crowd events, alongside Brahmotsavam. In January 2025, overnight crowds at physical token counters for Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam turned dangerous, and TTD has since pushed firmly toward online e-DIP booking over last-minute counter queues.
For 2026, have your token or darshan slot booked before you travel, not on arrival. Most seasoned Yatris budget at least 2-3 extra days: one buffer day for travel and hill-climb fatigue, one after darshan in case queue timings shift.
Travelling with elders or young children? Arrive a full day before your slot so everyone can rest at Tirupati before the climb, instead of rushing straight up.
Not every Yatri needs the same darshan route. Match your choice to your circumstances:
Elders or those with mobility concerns: Book Special Entry Darshan (₹300) for a shorter, more predictable wait rather than the token queue.
First-time Yatris: Try for an e-DIP token on 20-22 December for the full Vaikunta Dwaram experience, but keep a Sarva Darshan backup plan.
Budget travellers: Sarva Darshan from 23-29 December costs nothing and still passes through the Dwaram, just with a longer wait.
Tight schedules (1-2 days in Tirupati): An SED ticket paired with a private taxi transfer saves the most time versus public transport and long walk-in queues.
TTD releases guest-house rooms roughly 90 days (three months) ahead, opening online at a fixed time, usually 3:00 PM IST. Rooms for festival dates can vanish within 5-15 minutes of release, so the covering month's quota needs booking the moment it opens.
If you miss it, private lodges in Tirupati town fill fast too, especially for the 20-22 December token days. Securing a private hotel 6-8 weeks out is far safer than hoping for a walk-in during festival week.
RTC buses and autos from Tirupati station fill up fast during the rush, and taxi stands see long waits too. Ghat road traffic also slows on festival days.
A private taxi booked ahead means a fixed pickup time, with no negotiating after a long darshan queue. For elders heading to a fixed token slot, a driver who knows festival-week ghat road timings saves real hours.
Staying inside Tirumala at a TTD guest house puts you closest to the temple and cuts down on ghat road travel on darshan day, but these rooms sell out first. Tirupati town, at the base of the hills, has far more private hotel options and is the safer bet once TTD's online quota is gone.
Whichever you choose, lock in your stay before your darshan slot is confirmed — cancelling a booked room is far easier than finding one after mid-December.
Vaikunta Ekadashi is one of the few days a year when the gates of Tirumala itself seem to open a little wider for every Yatri who makes the climb. Plan your token, your room, and your ride well ahead, and these ten days will feel like grace rather than a scramble. Govinda Govinda.
