Tirupati has its own airport and its own railway junction, so getting to the town is rarely the hard part. Tirupati Airport (TIR) is about 38 km from Tirumala, and Tirupati's own station sits right at the foot of the ghat road. This guide compares flight, train and road options from Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad against that final climb.
Five airlines serve Tirupati Airport — IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Alliance Air and Fly91. IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru and Hyderabad, both about 1 hr 10 min in the air, and Hyderabad is the busiest route with roughly 40 flights a week.
There's no direct flight from Chennai — road and rail cover that short hop faster than flying via a hub. The airport is about 38 km from Tirumala, roughly 1 hour to 1 hr 20 min by road. Prepaid taxis start around ₹1,200 one-way.
Two stations serve the town: Tirupati (TPTY) at the base of the ghat road, and Renigunta Junction (RU), about 10 km away, where some long-distance trains stop. Chennai has three daily direct trains: Sapthagiri Express (16057/16058, ~4 hr 10 min), Chennai Central–Tirupati Express (16053/16054, ~3 hr 25 min) and Garudadri Express (16203/16204, ~3 hr 35 min).
Bangalore's SMVT Bengaluru–Tirupati Intercity Express (22617/22618) runs Mon, Wed and Sat, covering 334 km in about 5 hr 45 min. Hyderabad's Vande Bharat (20701/20702) runs six days a week, covering 661 km in 8 hr 20 min; the overnight Padmavati Express (12763/12764) takes about 12 hr 15 min, five days a week.
| From | Train | Frequency | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai | Sapthagiri Express | Daily | ~4 hr 10 min |
| Bangalore | SMVT Intercity Express | Mon, Wed, Sat | ~5 hr 45 min |
| Hyderabad | Vande Bharat Express | 6 days/week | ~8 hr 20 min |
| Hyderabad | Padmavati Express (overnight) | 5 days/week | ~12 hr 15 min |
Chennai to Tirupati is about 135–150 km, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours on NH716. It's the one drive of the three that's comfortable in a single sitting, even for elders.
Bangalore to Tirupati runs about 250–260 km via NH75, NH69 and NH140 through Kolar and Chittoor, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours. Hyderabad is the long haul — about 550–570 km on NH44/NH40, taking 9 to 12 hours to self-drive, which is why most Hyderabad travellers take the train or a flight instead.
Travelling with elders or small kids: fly into Tirupati if you're coming from Bangalore or Hyderabad — the ghat drive afterward is short enough for anyone.
On a tight budget: the daily trains from Chennai or the Vande Bharat from Hyderabad beat flight fares by a wide margin.
On a tight schedule: book a private taxi door to door — it skips the transfer between airport/station and Tirumala entirely.
Driving yourself from Hyderabad: avoid a single-day drive; break the 550+ km journey overnight in Kurnool or Kadapa instead.
However you arrive, the final leg is the same ghat road. Two one-way roads climb the hill, each about 18 km with over 36 hairpin bends — one carries traffic up, the other brings it down. A car covers this in about 40 minutes to an hour normally, longer during festival rush.
From Renigunta Junction it's roughly 32–37 km to Tirumala, about an hour by taxi, since the station sits slightly further out than Tirupati town. Taxis and buses run the ghat road nearly round the clock, so a late-night train or flight rarely strands you.
Arriving early gives you more room before queues build — our Tirupati Balaji darshan timings guide breaks down the Sarvadarshanam and paid-entry windows. Near a festival, check the Vaikunta Ekadashi guide before booking transport, since roads and trains fill up fast.
Once on the hill, cloakroom and dress-code rules apply before any queue — our Tirumala darshan logistics guide covers what to carry and what to leave behind.
Trusted by thousands of Yatris across India.
Most Yatris stay either in Tirupati town, close to the station and airport road, or on Tirumala itself for an early-morning slot. Town keeps you near your onward transport; the hill saves the ghat-road trip on darshan morning.
However you get here, the last 18 km up the ghat road matter more than the first 500 — plan that stretch and the rest falls into place. Om Namo Venkatesaya.
