Braj from Delhi is a 2–3 day road trip: Vrindavan sits about 160–180 km down the Yamuna Expressway, roughly 3–3.5 hours if you leave before dawn. Two days cover Mathura and Vrindavan; the third gets you to Govardhan and Barsana without rushing darshan. Here are the route, temple hours, costs and the days to avoid.
The whole circuit is short on paper; the time goes in queues and lanes, not on highways. Take the Yamuna Expressway from Noida, leave at the Mathura exit, and keep the car for the Braj loop.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi → Mathura (Yamuna Expressway) | ~150–165 km | 3–3.5 hrs at dawn, 4–5 hrs evening |
| Mathura → Vrindavan | ~12–15 km | 30 min |
| Vrindavan → Govardhan (via Radha Kund road) | ~24 km | 40–50 min |
| Govardhan → Barsana | ~20 km | 35–40 min |
| Barsana → Nandgaon | ~10 km | 25 min |
| Mathura → Gokul | ~15 km | 25–30 min |
The expressway toll for a car works out to roughly ₹400–450 one way, paid across three plazas; carry FASTag. Inside Vrindavan the car stops at the parking belt and you switch to an e-rickshaw or walk, because the Banke Bihari lanes are too narrow for anything else.
If you have already read our Delhi to Mathura–Vrindavan darshan guide, this post adds the Govardhan and Barsana day on top of it.
Leave Delhi by 5 am. That single decision decides whether you reach Vrindavan before Banke Bihari closes at noon.
Day 1 — Delhi to Vrindavan
5 am depart, 8:30 am reach Vrindavan, straight to Banke Bihari before the gate shuts.
Check in, rest through the closed hours, then Prem Mandir from 4:30 pm.
Stay for the 30-minute light show (around 7–7:30 pm in winter, 7:30–8 pm in summer) and the evening Banke Bihari darshan.
Day 2 — Mathura and Gokul
ISKCON mangala aarti at 4:30 am if you can wake for it.
Drive to Mathura: Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, then Dwarkadhish before its 10:30 am close.
Afternoon Gokul (15 km) or Vishram Ghat; return to Delhi, or sleep in Vrindavan for day three.
Day 3 — Govardhan and Barsana
Govardhan by 7 am: Daan Ghati, Mansi Ganga, then the parikrama on foot or by car.
Barsana by early afternoon for the Shriji temple, which stays open till 2 pm; Nandgaon if time allows.
Back on the expressway by 5 pm, Delhi by 9 pm.
Every main temple in Braj closes through the afternoon. Plan the loop around these windows, and remember they shift between summer and winter.
| Temple | Summer | Winter |
|---|---|---|
| Banke Bihari, Vrindavan | 7:45 am–12 pm, 5:30–9:30 pm | 8:45 am–1 pm, 4:30–8:30 pm |
| Prem Mandir, Vrindavan | 8:30 am–12 pm, 4:30–8:30 pm | same, light show earlier |

| Shriji (Radha Rani), Barsana | 5 am–2 pm, 5–9 pm | 5:30 am–2 pm, 5–8:30 pm |
Banke Bihari darshan is free and there is no genuine VIP pass. Anyone selling one outside is selling a place in the same crush.
Prices below are ranges quoted by operators in late 2026; treat them as a budget, not a quote.
Sedan, Delhi–Vrindavan one way: about ₹2,800–3,500, toll usually extra.
SUV (Innova/Ertiga) one way: about ₹3,800–4,800; round trips run ₹5,900–6,900 plus toll.
Per-km hire for the Braj loop: roughly ₹16/km for an Innova, with a daily minimum of around 250 km.
Rooms: budget guest houses from about ₹800; a clean 3-star around ₹2,000–3,500 per night.
Barsana ropeway: ₹60 one way, ₹100 return, counter tickets only.
Temples: no entry fee anywhere on this circuit.
A family of four in an SUV for three days, with two hotel nights, typically lands between ₹20,000 and ₹30,000 all in. Train Yatris can take Taj Express (12280) from Hazrat Nizamuddin at 7:08 am, reaching Mathura 8:35 am, then hire locally.
The Govardhan parikrama is 21 km (seven kos), walked clockwise from Daan Ghati Mandir past Mansi Ganga, Jatipura's Mukharvind, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar. On foot it takes 5–7 hours; start between 4 and 7 am, barefoot if you can bear it.
Elders and families usually do it by car in about 1.5–2 hours, stopping at the kunds. The parikrama marg never closes and Daan Ghati is open round the clock, so a pre-dawn start is normal and cool.
At Barsana the Shriji temple sits on Bhanugarh hill, up 200–250 steps from the bazaar. The ropeway is about 210 metres, a 6–7 minute ride, and drops you a short walk below the sanctum. Tickets are sold only at the counter; there is no online booking as of 2026.
Braj has three crowd seasons, and each one changes whether you should even attempt Banke Bihari.
Govardhan Pooja / Annakut: 10 November 2026 (some panchangs mark 9 November). Govardhan town and the parikrama marg are packed; do the parikrama a day either side.
Kartik month (October–November 2026): daily crowds at Banke Bihari rise well above the usual 30,000–40,000.
Holi week 2027: Laddu Holi Barsana 15 March, Lathmar Holi Barsana 16 March, Nandgaon 17 March, Holika Dahan 21 March, Rangwali Holi 22 March.
Janmashtami fell on 4 September 2026 and Radhashtami on 19 September 2026; both are over for this season, and rooms for the next ones go six to eight weeks ahead.
Weekends are the hidden crowd season: Banke Bihari sees around 1.5 lakh Yatris on a Saturday or Sunday against 30,000–40,000 on a weekday. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 8 and 9:30 are the calmest darshan of the week.
The Supreme Court has cleared a ₹500 crore corridor around Banke Bihari and asked Uttar Pradesh for a crowd-management plan; expect lane diversions and parking changes near the temple through 2026–27.
With elderly parents: three days, car parikrama at Govardhan, ropeway at Barsana, and skip the Saturday. Book a room within walking distance of Banke Bihari so the evening darshan needs no rickshaw.
On a tight weekend: two days, Friday night departure, Banke Bihari at Saturday opening, Govardhan by car on Sunday morning and home by evening.
On a budget: Taj Express to Mathura, shared tempo for the Braj loop, an ashram guest house in Vrindavan. Expect to lose Barsana unless you add a day.
Chasing the festival: come for Lathmar Holi in March 2027, but base yourself in Mathura rather than Vrindavan, and reach Barsana before 8 am.
What to avoid: arriving in Vrindavan at noon on a Saturday, and expecting phones inside Janmabhoomi. If you are still weighing Braj against a longer yatra, the Delhi yatra planner compares the weekend options.
Sleep in Vrindavan, not Mathura, because both evening darshans and the dawn ISKCON aarti are there. Rooms near Prem Mandir and the Chhatikara road take cars easily; rooms inside the old lanes near Banke Bihari mean a walk from the parking belt with your bags.
Budget guest houses and ashram rooms start around ₹800 a night, and a dependable 3-star runs ₹2,000–3,500. For Holi week and Janmashtami, book six to eight weeks ahead; on an ordinary weekday you can usually find a room on the day.
Reach Vrindavan before the noon gate, give Govardhan its own morning, and Braj rewards you. Radhe Radhe.
