Kartik 2026 in Vrindavan ends on Kartik Purnima, Tuesday 24 November 2026, and its four dated days fall in one week: Gopashtami on Tuesday 17, Akshaya Navami on Wednesday 18, Dev Uthani Ekadashi on Friday 20, and Purnima itself. Here is what each day looks like on the ground, so you can pick one and plan around it.
Kartik is the Damodar month, when Yatris stay the full month, light a lamp to Damodar each evening and walk the parikrama daily. The dated days, from the Mathura panchang:
| Day | Date (2026) | What happens in Braj |
|---|---|---|
| Gopashtami | Tuesday 17 November | Go-pooja at goshalas; Radha Raman dressed as a cowherd |
| Akshaya (Amla) Navami | Wednesday 18 November | Mathura Panchkosi and teen-van parikrama; lakhs walk |
| Dev Uthani Ekadashi | Friday 20 November (Vaishnava: Saturday 21) | Vishnu wakes; Tulsi Vivah on Saturday 21 |
| Kartik Purnima / Dev Diwali | Tuesday 24 November | Deep-daan at Keshi Ghat and Vishram Ghat; month ends |
Note the Ekadashi split. The Smarta Ekadashi is Friday 20 November, but ISKCON and the Gaudiya temples observe the Vaishnava Ekadashi on Saturday 21 November, with parana around midday. If you are coming for an ISKCON programme, come on the Saturday.
Gopashtami is the day Krishna graduated from calf-herd to cow-herd, so it belongs to the cows. The go-pooja happens at the goshalas, not inside the big temples. ISKCON Vrindavan holds its go-pooja at its own goshala of about 650 indigenous cows; the hour is on the temple notice, not fixed year to year.
At Radha Raman temple the deity is dressed in full gwal costume for the day, with horn, stick and rope, one of the prettiest darshans of the year. Banke Bihari runs its normal winter schedule.
One correction to a common claim: Banke Bihari's charan darshan happens only on Akshaya Tritiya, in April, never on Gopashtami.
Akshaya Navami is the biggest walking day of the month. Braj tradition is the teen-van parikrama of Mathura, Vrindavan and Garud Govind, in memory of Krishna's own circuit before he faced Kansa. Lakhs of Yatris walk it, most barefoot.
The core of it is the Mathura Panchkosi parikrama: about 11 km, roughly 3 hours, starting at Vishram Ghat after a Yamuna snan. Sources differ by a kilometre or two, and the full teen-van route is far longer, so decide beforehand whether you are doing Mathura alone or the whole circuit.
Dev Uthani, or Prabodhini, Ekadashi is the day Vishnu wakes after four months, and it is the heaviest temple day of this week. The Ekadashi tithi runs from about 7:15 am on Friday 20 November to about 6:30 am on Saturday 21 November, which is why the two traditions keep different days.
Tulsi Vivah is Saturday 21 November, with the vivah muhurat in the evening, from roughly 5:25 pm to 8:45 pm. Across Vrindavan, Tulsi is married to Shaligram in courtyards, ashrams and homes, and the town is at its most lamp-lit.
Kartik Purnima closes the month. The Purnima tithi begins late on Monday 23 November and runs to about 8:20 pm on Tuesday 24 November, so the deep-daan happens on the Tuesday evening, in the Pradosh window of roughly 5:10 to 7:55 pm.
In Vrindavan, lamps go into the Yamuna at Keshi Ghat, where the daily aarti is held around sunset, about 6:30 pm in November. In Mathura the deep-daan centres on Vishram Ghat, aarti also about 6:30 pm. The ghats fill an hour before sunset.
Banke Bihari switches to its winter timetable after Bhai Dooj, around 10–11 November 2026, so the whole festival week runs on winter hours. The commonly published winter schedule is 8:45 am to 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
The temple's 2026 notice was not out as this was written; confirm it in the second week of November.
Rules that changed:
VIP slips and special-gallery darshan were abolished in September 2025. Everyone queues
Entry is through Gates 2 and 3, exit through Gates 1 and 4; climbing the Jagmohan stairs is banned
For a first-time route through the town, our Mathura–Vrindavan Braj Yatra plan covers the temples in order.
From Delhi it is 150–185 km on the Yamuna Expressway, about 3 hours; our Delhi to Mathura–Vrindavan guide has the Delhi-end detail. By train, 12280 Taj Express leaves New Delhi at 06:55 and reaches Mathura Junction at 08:35; 12002 Shatabdi departs 06:00, arrives 07:19. Gatimaan does not stop at Mathura.
Mathura Junction to Vrindavan is about 15 km, 35–40 minutes. An auto costs roughly ₹250–450; shared autos run at ₹20–50 a seat, and e-rickshaw hops inside town about ₹20–50 a person.
On festival windows the administration bars outside vehicles, and cars park at the Chhatikara multi-level and ITI lots. The Kartik 2026 traffic plan was not yet published.
Which day should you choose?
With elders: Gopashtami, Tuesday 17; the lightest crowd of the week and a seated darshan at Radha Raman
On a budget: come on a weekday before the 17th, when rooms still have space
Fit and keen to walk: Akshaya Navami; start the Panchkosi at dawn
ISKCON followers: Saturday 21 November, Vaishnava Ekadashi plus Tulsi Vivah in one evening
Avoid: arriving by car on Ekadashi without a parking plan, and a Banke Bihari slot in the 8:45 am rush on any of these days
Rates in Kartik are often double a normal week. Budget rooms at ₹700–1,500 and standard rooms at ₹1,800–3,500 in a normal month climb sharply for 17–24 November, and ashrams and dharamshalas are taken by month-long vrat keepers from late October.
Stay near Banke Bihari or on the parikrama marg to walk; stay on the Chhatikara road if you come by car. Book 8–10 weeks ahead for this week, which means now.
Pick your day, fix the room, and let the month do the rest. Radhe Radhe.
