Aundha Nagnath lies in Hingoli district about 200–220 km east of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a 4.5 to 5 hour drive via Jalna and Jintur. The temple opens before dawn and closes around 9 pm; the linga rests in an underground chamber entered bent double. Below: the road, the train via Hingoli Deccan, sanctum rules and crowd days.
There is no expressway yet. Take the Jalna highway out of the city, then continue east from Jalna through Mantha and Jintur to Aundha. The Jalna–Nanded link of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is still under construction, so plan on two-lane state highway after Jalna.
Budget 4.5–5 hours with one tea halt. The Mantha–Jintur stretch is where the surface gets patchy, and it is slow after dark, so leave the city by 6 am for a late-morning darshan.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Sambhajinagar → Jalna | ~60 km | 1 h 15 min |
| Jalna → Jintur (via Mantha) | ~95 km | 2 h |
| Jintur → Aundha Nagnath | ~39 km | 50 min |
| Total | ~200–220 km | 4.5–5 h |
The one train that fits is the 12071 Mumbai CSMT–Hingoli Deccan Jan Shatabdi. It leaves Aurangabad station at 18:30 daily and reaches Hingoli Deccan (HNL) at 00:30; the return 12072 leaves Hingoli at 04:20 and is back by 09:30.
Hingoli is 25 km from the temple; ST buses from the Hingoli stand start around 03:35.
Parbhani Junction, about 50 km from Aundha, has many more trains, and buses run between Parbhani and Hingoli via Aundha roughly every 30 minutes from 3:30 am to 8:15 pm.
Jan Shatabdi 12071/12072: daily, but the midnight arrival means a night at Hingoli.
Tapovan Express 17617: reaches Parbhani at 16:18; one more hour by bus or taxi.
MSRTC direct: about 15 buses a day between Aundha and Sambhajinagar, 4–4.5 hours, fares from around ₹323.
Doors open before dawn (the trust's listing says 4 am, several guides say 5:30 am) and close at 9 pm; in Shravan the day stretches to 10 pm. Sanctum access can pause during the aartis, so arrive 20 minutes before or after one.
| Ritual | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Mangal aarti | 5:05–5:30 am |
| Maha aarti / Mahabhog | 12:00–12:30 pm |
| Evening pooja | 4:30–5:30 pm |
| Shayan aarti | 8:30–9:00 pm |
On a normal weekday the queue is 20–40 minutes. On Shravan Mondays reviewers report waits of 4 hours, and darshan starts around 2 am. A paid special-darshan line of around ₹200 is reported, but confirm at the counter.
The Jyotirlinga, eighth of the twelve, is in a basement chamber. From the sabhamandap you go down two or three steep steps through a narrow opening, then move bent nearly on all fours; mind your head both ways.
The temple faces west and Nandi sits behind the sanctum. The Namdev legend explains it: the temple turned to face the saint.
Men performing abhishek remove their shirt; for plain darshan modest clothing is enough.
Abhishek and touching the linga happen only with a temple pujari, never from the general line. Agree the dakshina before you go down.
Mobiles and cameras are not allowed inside; use the lockers near the gate.
Leather items are not permitted in the complex.
Leave bags outside: the passage is too tight for them.
Kartik month in Maharashtra's amanta calendar runs 10 November to 8 December 2026, so the Kartik Somvars fall on 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December.
Kartik Purnima (Tripurari Purnima) is 24 November 2026, the night Shiva temples across Marathwada light their deepmalas; our Grishneshwar Kartik Purnima guide explains the evening. Vijayadashami and the Magha fair in January–February also bring heavy footfall.
Takhat Sachkhand Hazur Sahib in Nanded is 55–61 km south-east of Aundha, about 1 h 15 min by road. The gurudwara is open 4 am to 10 pm and the evening aarti is at 7:30 pm, so a morning Jyotirlinga darshan and an evening at Hazur Sahib fit one day.
Parli Vaijnath is 119 km, roughly 3 hours south, with a rough 50-km stretch midway. For that leg use our Sambhajinagar to Parli Vaijnath route guide; for all three Maharashtra Jyotirlingas from the city, the three-Jyotirlinga circuit plan lays out the nights.
With elders: private taxi, leave at 6 am, darshan by 11, home by evening. Avoid Shravan Mondays, and let one fit person go down first to judge the crawl.
On a budget: the morning MSRTC bus, about 4.5 hours and roughly ₹323; take a return bus by 3 pm so you are not on the Jintur road after dark.
On a tight schedule: the 12071 at 18:30, a room in Hingoli, 6 am darshan, and the 12072 back at 04:20 the next morning. Two nights away, one very short.
Avoid: driving back after dark on the Mantha–Jintur stretch, and Mahashivratri week unless you came for the festival.
Aundha village has plain bhakt-niwas rooms within a kilometre of the bus stand: the trust's Yajman Niwas (about 1 km), Maheshwari Yatri Nivas (350 m) and Sadguru Bhakta Nivas (700 m). They fill on Mondays and festival eves, so book ahead or arrive before noon.
Hingoli (25 km) and Parbhani (50 km) have proper hotels and suit anyone arriving by train. Most Sambhajinagar Yatris day-trip and sleep at home.
Go early, go bent low, and let the driver worry about the Jintur road. Har Har Mahadev.
