Kashi Vishwanath temple sits deep in Varanasi's old city, and if you're planning the trip from Delhi, two questions decide your whole itinerary: when you can get in, and how you skip the general queue. General darshan runs early morning to late evening with a midday gap.
The paid Sugam Darshan pass and the two big aartis — Mangla and Sapt Rishi — need booking on the temple trust's own site before you land. Get those three sorted and the rest of the trip, flight or train, taxi or hotel, falls into place.
The temple gates open around 2:30–3 AM and close at 11 PM. General (free) darshan runs in two windows — roughly 4 AM to 11 AM and 12:30 PM to 7 PM — with the gap kept for temple rituals.
On an ordinary weekday morning the free queue moves in 45–90 minutes; on a Monday afternoon it can cross 4 hours.
Sugam Darshan is the paid fast-track line, priced at around ₹300 per person on the temple trust's own booking portal. It runs roughly 6 AM to 6 PM and cuts the wait to 20–45 minutes.
The ticket includes a free locker for your phone plus a small Mewa Laddu prasad on the way out. Book only at shrikashivishwanath.org — no travel agent or app is authorised to sell this ticket.
Mangla Aarti is the temple's first ritual of the day, held 3 AM to 4 AM, and costs about ₹500 per person on the official site. Security checks mean you should report by 2 AM–2:30 AM, well before the aarti starts.
Sapt Rishi Aarti, the evening ceremony performed by seven priests together, runs 7 PM to 8:15 PM and costs around ₹300 per person.
Both prices climb during Shravan (July–August), when Mangla Aarti can rise to roughly ₹600 on regular days and ₹1,200 on Mondays. Each booking allows a maximum of five people, and every member needs the same valid photo ID used at booking.
Slots for Sugam Darshan and the aartis open on shrikashivishwanath.org roughly two weeks ahead, though the trust has opened some slots up to 45 days out around big festivals. Check the live calendar rather than assuming a fixed date.
Book as soon as your travel dates are fixed if you're coming for a Monday, Shravan, or a festival week, since those slots close first.
Sparsh Darshan, where you're allowed to touch the Shivling, is suspended for most of Shravan and around the New Year rush, and isn't guaranteed on any given date — don't build your itinerary around it. Save the e-ticket with your ID for entry.
| Mode | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flight (DEL–VNS) | ~1 hr 20 min–1 hr 45 min | IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express fly non-stop, several times daily |
| Vande Bharat (train 22436) | 8 hours | New Delhi 6 AM → Varanasi 2 PM, same-day arrival |
| Other direct trains | 8–17 hours | 11 direct trains run New Delhi–Varanasi; overnight options exist |
| Road (self-drive/taxi) | 10–12+ hours | ~750–820 km via the Kanpur–Prayagraj corridor |
Which should you choose?
With elders or small children: fly — 80 minutes beats a full day either way.
Tight weekend: the 6 AM Vande Bharat out, evening train or flight back.
On a budget: an overnight train saves a night's hotel cost.
Avoid: an overnight drive through Kanpur on your first trip — take a daytime train or flight.

Photo ID is mandatory for every Sugam Darshan and aarti booking, and foreign visitors should carry a passport. Mobile phones, smartwatches and cameras are not allowed inside the sanctum — deposit them at the free locker before you join the queue.
Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Large bags, sharp objects, tobacco and any inflammable item are turned away at the gate.
Monday is the toughest day at Kashi Vishwanath — it's Lord Shiva's day, and afternoon queues regularly run past 4 hours in the October–March season. The calmest window is Tuesday to Thursday, 7–9 AM, when the free queue is closer to 45–90 minutes.
If your trip must fall in Shravan or over a festival weekend, book Sugam Darshan in advance rather than risk the general line.
If you're still weighing a quick weekend darshan against a longer yatra circuit from Delhi, our Delhi yatra planner breaks down what fits into two days versus five.
Stay inside the Vishwanath Gali / Godowlia lanes if you want a 5–10 minute walk to Mangla Aarti, though rooms here are smaller and cars can't reach the doorstep. For an easier taxi drop, pick a hotel near Dashashwamedh Ghat or Rathyatra, both a short walk from the temple's outer gates.
Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for Shravan Mondays or festival dates, when the old-city hotels fill first.
Kashi Vishwanath rewards a little planning — book the pass, pick your train or flight, and the rest of Varanasi opens up around you. Har Har Mahadev.
