Waiting on a Char Dham registration slot or a connecting train out of Delhi leaves most Yatris a half-day to spare. Paharganj, Connaught Place and ISBT Kashmere Gate sit close to old forts, a temple complex and markets worth a short visit. Here's what to see, what's closed which day, and how far each place is.
This cluster sits closest to where most Yatris actually stay. Paharganj is under a kilometre from New Delhi Railway Station, and the metro from New Delhi station to Chandni Chowk takes about 4 minutes. From ISBT Kashmere Gate, the Red Fort is roughly 1.5 km away — a short auto ride.
The Red Fort opens 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday to Sunday, and is closed on Mondays. Entry for Indian citizens is around ₹35. The nearest metro stops are Lal Qila (Violet Line, about a 9-minute walk) or Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line, 10 minutes through a crowded market).
Jama Masjid is open to visitors from 7 am to noon and 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm; it closes to tourists during prayer times. There's no entry fee, though carrying a camera costs about ₹300. Walk out through the lanes toward Chandni Chowk for a spice market and food stalls that need no ticket at all.
Both sit in east/south Delhi and both close on Mondays, so check your layover day before you plan around either. Akshardham is open 10 am to 8 pm (last entry 6:30 pm); the temple itself is free, exhibitions cost around ₹250, and the evening water show runs near 7:30 pm for about ₹90.
Carry nothing electronic — phones, cameras and even smartwatches go into a free locker at the gate, and the queue can eat into a tight schedule.
The Lotus Temple is simpler: free entry, 9 am–7 pm in summer (April–September) and 9 am–5:30 pm in winter, nearest metro Kalkaji Mandir. It suits a shorter stop better than Akshardham does.
These three don't close on Mondays, which makes them a solid backup plan. Qutub Minar is open daily, 7 am to 5 pm, entry around ₹35–40.
Humayun's Tomb keeps longer hours, 6 am to 6 pm daily, also around ₹35. The nearest metro is Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Violet Line) — about 2 km, or a 12–15 minute walk.
India Gate costs nothing and needs no fixed hours; it's an open lawn best visited in the evening. From Connaught Place it's about 3 km by road, a five-minute drive off-peak.
Match the list to the hours you actually have. A short table helps more than a long paragraph here.
| Sight | Distance from CP/Paharganj | Time needed | Closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Fort + Jama Masjid + Chandni Chowk | 3–4 km | 3–4 hrs | Red Fort: Monday |
| Akshardham | ~6.4 km | 3 hrs+ (locker queue) | Monday |
| Lotus Temple | ~8 km | 45 min–1 hr | Monday |
| Qutub Minar | ~15 km | 1.5 hrs | Open daily |
| Humayun's Tomb | ~10 km | 1–1.5 hrs | Open daily |
| India Gate | ~3 km | 30–45 min | Open daily |
Elders or anyone footsore: Lotus Temple and India Gate need the least walking; skip the Chandni Chowk lanes.
Budget travellers: Lotus Temple, India Gate and Jama Masjid cost nothing to enter.
Tight schedule (under 4 hours): pick one cluster only — Old Delhi or Akshardham — rather than splitting across the city.
Avoid: cramming Akshardham into the last two hours before a train; the electronics locker queue alone can run 20–30 minutes.
If Char Dham registration is what's holding you back in Delhi, our Char Dham Yatra from Delhi guide covers the registration steps and the circuit timing so you know exactly how long you're stuck here.
You'll need a valid ticket and photo ID to use the cloak room, with counters on both the Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj sides of the station.
For getting around, a Delhi Metro one-day tourist card costs ₹200 (₹150 in travel value plus a ₹50 refundable deposit). It covers unlimited rides on every line except the Airport Express.
Start early if Old Delhi is on your list — Chandni Chowk gets dense with both traffic and crowds by late morning. Heading onward to Haridwar or Rishikesh after this stop? Our Delhi to Haridwar & Rishikesh guide lays out the train, bus and taxi options for that next leg.
Paharganj and Connaught Place stay the most practical bases. Both sit within walking distance of New Delhi Railway Station and close enough to the metro to reach every sight above without long transfers.
If you're arriving by an overnight train and leaving the same night, a day-use room near the station saves the trouble of checking in twice.
