How Did Baba Get the Name “Sai”? Very Few Know the Real Story

We call him “Saibaba.” But did you know — that wasn’t his real name? And the moment the name was given was almost an accident. Very few people know the real story. 🚩

🛕 That moment

It was around 1858. Chand Patil’s wedding procession reached Shirdi.

The carts halt near the Khandoba temple
The bullock carts of the marriage party stopped beside the Khandoba mandir. One by one, the people of the procession climbed down.
A young fakir steps down with them
Among them was a young fakir — quiet, unknown, no one's idea of who he would become.
Mhalsapati sees him
The temple priest, Mhalsapati, looked at the young man. And the words came to his lips on their own — 'Ya Sai!' (Welcome, Sai!).

Ya Sai! — Welcome, Sai!

🙏 And the name stuck

“Sai” — meaning a saint, a holy soul. Mhalsapati said it with reverence. From that day on, the rest of the village began calling him “Sai” too. Slowly it became “Saibaba” — and that is the name now on the lips of crores of devotees.

✨ Think about it

The name worshipped across the world today was not chosen by anyone deliberately. It rose, simply and naturally, from one devotee’s love and respect.

Perhaps this is Baba’s leela itself — in the most ordinary moments, the most extraordinary things lie hidden.

When you visit Shirdi
The Khandoba temple where Mhalsapati first said 'Ya Sai' still stands. Make it a quiet first stop — the place where the name began.
