Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, and at Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain the festival begins before dawn with the Bhasma Aarti, hours before any home lights its first diya. From Indore the temple is about 55 km away, roughly ninety minutes by road. Here is the five-day plan and when to leave.
Ujjain says Diwali is celebrated here first. The reason is simple: the Bhasma Aarti begins around 4 am, so Mahakal is bathed, dressed and greeted with lamps while the rest of the country is still asleep.
On Diwali morning the pujari family does three things that happen on no other day. Women of the pujari family apply a fragrant ubtan to the Jyotirlinga, the same Abhyang Snan paste every household uses on Roop Chaudas. Then comes a Panchamrit Maha Abhishek, and only after that the Bhasma Aarti itself.
A phuljhadi is lit before the deity during the aarti. In 2025 the temple committee allowed exactly one sparkler inside and banned every other firework and flammable item in the campus. Expect the same rule in 2026.
Every aarti of the day is performed in the festival manner: the Bhasma Aarti, the aarti after the Abhyang Snan, the evening aarti and the Shayan Aarti. The temple administration itself says lakhs of Yatris come on Diwali, so plan the day around one aarti, not all four.
Diwali week at Mahakal is a run of five mornings, each with its own feel:
Friday 6 November, Dhanteras. The first big crowd of the week. Darshan queues run long from late morning; an early start from Indore still works.
Saturday 7 November, Roop Chaudas. The Abhyang Snan and ubtan tradition belongs to this tithi. In 2025 Roop Chaudas and Diwali fell on the same evening, so check a panchang closer to the day.
Sunday 8 November, Diwali. The main day. Bhasma Aarti with ubtan and phuljhadi, festival aartis all day, Lakshmi pooja in the evening.
Monday 9 November, Govardhan Pooja. By tradition the first Annakoot of the year is offered to Mahakal on the morning after Diwali, a chhappan bhog of fifty-six dishes after the morning snan.
Tuesday 10 November, Bhai Dooj. Crowds thin a little. A good day if you only want calm darshan.
Reports from 2025 describe the Bhasma Aarti on the day after Diwali drawing an enormous crowd too. If you cannot get a slot for the 8th, the 9th is the next best morning.
Bhasma Aarti entry is by online booking only, through the temple's official portal. Slots for a month are released ahead of time at a fixed morning hour, and festival dates vanish within minutes. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide walks through the registration screens and the ID rules.
Dress is strict for the aarti. Men wear a dhoti with an angavastram; women a saree or salwar suit with dupatta. Western clothes are turned away at the gate.
If you have no slot, you can still watch the aarti from the general hall after the sanctum ritual, but on Diwali that hall fills long before 4 am. The realistic alternative is Sheeghra Darshan, the paid fast lane, which usually costs about ₹250 per person.
The road from Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on a normal day. In Diwali week add half an hour for the last stretch into the temple zone, where traffic is diverted to parking lots and the final kilometre is on foot.
| Your target | Leave Indore | At the temple by |
|---|---|---|
| Bhasma Aarti (4 am) | 1:45–2:00 am | 3:30 am gate reporting |
| Morning darshan before the heat | 5:00 am | 6:45 am |
| Evening aarti and Diwali diyas | 3:00 pm | 5:00 pm |
For the full set of road, rail and bus options see how to reach Ujjain from Indore. On Diwali itself, a private car is the only option that gets you there at 3 am.
The Diwali crowd is at Mahakal; the rest of Ujjain's temples are busy but manageable. With a car waiting, two stops fit before lunch:
Kal Bhairav, about 5 km away, where Yatris offer liquor to the deity. Read our Kal Bhairav guide for the ritual and timings.
Harsiddhi Mata, a few minutes' walk from Mahakal, famous for its two deep-stambh lamp towers lit in the evening.
If you can stay in the region a fortnight longer, Kartik Purnima on 24 November brings Kshipra snan and deep daan to Ujjain's ghats, covered in our Kartik Purnima post.
With elderly parents: go on Tuesday 10 November, Bhai Dooj. The queues are shortest, Sheeghra Darshan is still available and the festival decoration is still up.
On a tight schedule from Indore: do the Diwali morning as a 2 am to 10 am round trip. You are back in Indore for your own Lakshmi pooja.
If you want the Annakoot: choose Monday 9 November and reach by 6 am.
Avoid: arriving on Diwali at 9 am without a slot. You will spend the day in a queue that moves slowly and miss both aartis.
Sleep in Ujjain if you are attending the Bhasma Aarti, within a kilometre of Gate 4 so the 3:15 am walk is short. Dharamshalas near the temple start around ₹1,300 a night and sell out weeks before Diwali.
Stay in Indore if you are doing a day trip, or if you want a bigger choice of hotels and to combine Mahakal with Omkareshwar on the next day.
Light your first diya of 2026 before the Jyotirlinga, then drive home to light the rest. Har Har Mahadev.
