Indore to Ujjain is about 55 km by road, a drive of 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. You can cover it by private taxi, bus, train or a shared cab, and all four run every day.
This guide compares them for a Yatri heading to Mahakaleshwar: where each one starts in Indore, where it leaves you in Ujjain, and how far that is from the temple.
Most Yatris start from one of three places, and the road distance to Ujjain is close to the same from each.
Indore airport (Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, IDR): about 55 km to Mahakaleshwar, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes.
Indore Junction (INDB): about 55 km, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes.
Sarwate bus stand: it stands right beside Indore Junction, about 100 metres away, so the distance is the same.
The airport is about 8 km from Indore Junction, around 25 minutes in city traffic. That matters if you land by flight and plan to take a bus or train: you first pay for a ride across the city, then wait for your departure.
The Indore–Ujjain highway is a four-lane road being widened to six lanes ahead of Simhastha 2028. Our Simhastha Kumbh 2028 guide explains why Ujjain is building so much right now.
Stretch: about 46 km, from Aurobindo Medical College in Indore to Hari Phatak square in Ujjain.
Cost: about ₹1,692 crore, with new bridges over the Kshipra and Kanh rivers, flyovers and underpasses.
Timeline: work began in January 2025 and the target is January 2027.
After completion: officials expect the drive to drop to about 45 minutes.
Reports from mid-2026 describe the road as around 80% done to nearly finished. Until it opens fully, expect short work zones and lane shifts, with Sanwer mentioned in earlier reports. We could not confirm today's exact diversions, so keep a 20-minute buffer.

Buses for Ujjain leave from Sarwate bus stand, next to Indore Junction. Booking sites list departures from before dawn until late at night, with one site showing over 60 a day. You rarely need a ticket in advance for a daytime seat.
Time: about 1 hour 45 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes, because of stops on the way.
Fare: non-AC seats listed from about ₹63–75, AC seats from about ₹120.
Drop points: Nanakheda bus stand, Dewas Gate bus stand, and Hari Phatak on some services.
From the bus stand, an auto to the temple takes 12–15 minutes for the 2–4 km. Ask the conductor which stand the bus ends at before you board.
Indore Junction to Ujjain Junction is about 62 km by rail. There are two kinds of train on this stretch.
Express trains such as the Avantika Express (12962, about 1 hr 05 min) and the Shanti Express (19310, about 1 hr 15 min). They are long-distance trains, so timings suit some arrivals and not others.
MEMU and passenger trains such as 69212 and 69214 (1 hr 35 min to 1 hr 45 min) and the unreserved specials 09352 and 09354 (about 1 hr 25 min to 1 hr 35 min). These run daily.
Ujjain Junction is 1.5–2 km from Mahakaleshwar, the shortest last leg of any option. Autos wait outside the station. Our Mahakaleshwar temple logistics guide covers gates, lockers and where vehicles stop.
Family with elders, children or luggage: private taxi. One vehicle from door to door, and no carrying bags across a bus stand.
Solo Yatri on a budget, already near Indore Junction: train if a departure is within the hour, otherwise the bus from Sarwate next door.
Landing at Indore airport: taxi straight from the airport. Going to the station first adds 8 km and a wait.
Late arrival: night buses and trains are fewer and autos in Ujjain are harder to find, so plan the taxi in advance.
Bhasma Aarti next morning: reach Ujjain the evening before and sleep near the temple.
What to avoid: leaving Indore before dawn to make a Bhasma Aarti slot the same morning. The aarti is held from about 4 am to 6 am and entry needs a pass booked in advance. Read the Bhasma Aarti booking guide before you fix dates.
Stay in Ujjain if darshan is the reason for your trip. The temple opens at about 4 am, and a room within walking distance lets elders rest between the morning darshan and the evening visit to Mahakal Lok.
Stay in Indore only if your flight or train leaves early the next day. Rooms near the temple fill up around Diwali (8 November 2026) and Kartik Purnima later in November, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Going on to the second Jyotirlinga? Our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide covers that leg, and the Indore taxi page lists the Omkareshwar routes too.
Pick the option that fits your arrival time, keep a small buffer for the road work, and give yourself an unhurried evening at Mahakal Lok. Har Har Mahadev.
