Most first trips to Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar go wrong at the planning stage, not on the road. The nine mistakes below are the ones that cost a darshan, a train or half a day. Each comes with the fact behind it and what to do instead.
1. Assuming a Bhasma Aarti pass can be had on arrival
The fact: the offline permit counter at Mahakaleshwar closed from 9 April 2026. The portal now offers an advance request, opened month by month, and tatkal at 8 AM one day before the aarti.
Do instead: apply on shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in as soon as your month opens. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide has the steps.
2. Paying an agent who promises a guaranteed pass
The fact: the temple issues Bhasma Aarti passes and Sheeghra Darshan tickets only through its own portal. Even the portal says an advance request does not guarantee a booking, so nobody outside can.
Do instead: book it yourself with your own photo ID. One mobile number or Aadhaar can place up to three requests.
3. Booking a train to Omkareshwar Road station
The fact: the name looks right, but the metre-gauge line through it has had no passenger trains since 30 January 2023. The broad-gauge line is still being built.
Do instead: arrive at Indore, about 80 km from Omkareshwar, or at Khandwa Junction, about 70 km away on the Mumbai–Delhi main line.
4. Planning both temples in one day
The fact: the road alone is about 275 km and close to seven hours. Queues at two Jyotirlingas come on top of that.
Do instead: give it two days, with the night in Ujjain.
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Indore → Ujjain | about 55 km | about 1 hr 15 min |
| Ujjain → Omkareshwar | about 140 km | about 3.5 hrs |
| Omkareshwar → Indore | about 80 km | about 2 hrs 15 min |
5. Carrying the pass only on your phone
The fact: phones are not allowed inside Mahakaleshwar and go into the cloakroom. For the Bhasma Aarti, men wear a dhoti and women a saree.
Do instead: print the pass or ticket, carry the original ID used for booking, and pack the right clothes. Our Ujjain darshan timings and tickets guide lists each darshan type.
6. Reaching Omkareshwar at lunchtime
The fact: by the temple trust's schedule, darshan stops from 12:20 PM to 1:15 PM for the midday bhog. It stops again from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM for the evening shringar.
Do instead: leave Ujjain by 6:30 AM and reach at about 10 AM. The Ujjain to Omkareshwar route guide covers the road.
7. Skipping Mamleshwar
The fact: Mamleshwar stands on the south bank of the Narmada, across the river from the island temple. By tradition the yatra covers both shrines, and many first-time Yatris leave after only one.
Do instead: keep an hour for it. The 2-day package puts Mamleshwar and the Narmada ghat at 12 noon, right after Omkareshwar.
8. Arriving on a Shravan Monday without a buffer
The fact: on the first Shravan Monday of 2026, 3 August, Mahakaleshwar counted over 3 lakh devotees by 1:30 PM. The Bhasma Aarti moved to 2:30 AM on those Mondays, and the Mahakal sawari fills the old-city streets from the afternoon.
Do instead: pick a Tuesday to Thursday, or add a spare half day. Expect the same around Diwali on 8 November 2026 and Kartik Purnima on 24 November.
9. Booking an afternoon train or flight out of Indore
The fact: on the 2-day plan the car leaves Omkareshwar at about 2 PM and drops you in Indore at about 4:15 PM. A long queue or a Bhasma Aarti morning pushes that later.
Do instead: book a departure after about 7 PM, or stay the night in Indore.
With elders: take the 2-day plan. Omkareshwar has steps and a bridge walk, so keep the pace slow.
On a tight schedule: a same-day trip can cover one Jyotirlinga, not both. Choose Omkareshwar from Indore or Mahakaleshwar from Indore.
Coming by train from Mumbai or Bhusawal: Khandwa Junction may suit you better than Indore for the Omkareshwar side.
Want Maheshwar too: take three days. Maheshwar is about 65 km from Omkareshwar, on the Narmada.
Spend the night in Ujjain, not Indore. You finish Day 1 at the evening aarti on Ram Ghat, about 1 km from Mahakaleshwar. You are also in the right town if a Bhasma Aarti pass comes through.
Choose a room within about 1 km of the temple. Stay in Indore only on the last night, when an early flight makes it useful.
Plan it once and plan it right, and both Jyotirlingas fit in two calm days. Har Har Mahadev.
