On the night of Baikunth Chaturdashi, Monday 23 November 2026, Mahakal leaves his temple at 11 PM and rides through Ujjain to Gopal Mandir to meet Vishnu. The two exchange garlands of bilva and tulsi around midnight, and Shiva hands the running of the world back to Hari after the four months of Chaturmas.
From Indore it is a 55 km evening drive, a night on your feet, and a return at 2 AM. This is how to plan it.
The story runs across one week of Kartik. On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, 20 November 2026, Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep. Three nights later, on Chaturdashi, Shiva comes in person to hand back charge of the world he has minded through Chaturmas.
At Gopal Mandir, Mahakal offers Gopal a garland of bilva patra, and Gopal returns a garland of tulsi. Each deity receives the leaf sacred to the other, which is the whole point of the night. Mahakal is then dressed with the tulsi mala, and the sawari returns to the temple by the same route.
The meeting is called Harihar Milan, Hari for Vishnu and Hara for Shiva. In Ujjain it is the only night of the year when Mahakal travels to another temple as a guest.
The sawari leaves the Mahakaleshwar temple at 11 PM and reaches Gopal Mandir around midnight, a route of under two kilometres that takes an hour because of the crowd.
| Spot | Sawari passes | What it is like |
|---|---|---|
| Mahakaleshwar temple gate | 11 PM | Tightest crowd; the palki leaves through a police cordon |
| Mahakal Chauraha | about 11:15 PM | Wide junction, the best place for a first view |
| Gudri Chauraha | about 11:30 PM | Lanes narrow; bands and dancers slow the sawari |
| Patni Bazaar | about 11:45 PM | Shop fronts, upper floors packed with locals |
| Gopal Mandir square | midnight | The exchange; the square is full from 9 PM |
For a first visit, stand at Mahakal Chauraha for the departure, then walk ahead of the sawari down a parallel lane to Gopal Mandir. The square fills by 9 PM, so you will see the exchange on screens unless you are inside the temple compound early.
A road-widening project on the Mahakal Chauraha to Gopal Mandir stretch was suspended until Diwali 2026 after traders protested. Check in the week before whether the Patni Bazaar lanes are open or under work.
Indore to the Mahakal area is 55 km and takes 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes in the evening. Work the night like this:
7 PM: leave Indore. Dinner in Ujjain, because nothing near Gopal Mandir will be reachable after 9.
8:30 PM: Shayan Aarti slots at Mahakal are usually sold out and the schedule moves on sawari nights, so do not plan on it.
9:30 PM: park at the Mahakal Lok side and walk in. Be at Mahakal Chauraha by 10.
12:30 AM: the sawari turns back from Gopal Mandir. Walk back to the car against the flow.
1:30 AM: leave Ujjain. Indore by about 3 AM.
If you would rather not drive back, stay in Ujjain and take the next morning's Bhasma Aarti; the tatkal quota opens the morning of 23 November. The late-night Mahakal plan covers the 1 AM reporting rules.
The next day, Tuesday 24 November 2026, is Kartik Purnima. Ujjain fills Ram Ghat for Kshipra snan from before dawn and lights deep daan lamps on the river at dusk. If you have stayed the night, the ghat is a 15-minute walk from Mahakal.
The Kartik Purnima at Ujjain guide has the snan timings. For the Omkareshwar side of the same full moon, see the Omkareshwar Kartik Purnima plan.
The Harihar Milan sawari is also counted among the Kartik–Agahan Monday sawaris of Mahakal, which run on the Mondays of these two months. The 2026 list had not been published at the time of writing; it usually appears in early November.
With elderly parents: only if they can stand for three hours in a dense crowd. A better plan is the Mahakal Chauraha view at 11, then back to the car.
With children: children over ten enjoy it; younger ones get crushed in Patni Bazaar. Keep them on shoulders or at home.
On a budget: take the evening train from Indore Junction and stay the night in Ujjain, since there is nothing back to Indore after midnight.
On a tight schedule: the 7 PM out, 3 AM home taxi plan above is the only way to see it and work the next day.
Avoid the Gopal Mandir square after 9 PM if you dislike crowds, and avoid carrying bags. Firecrackers are banned along the route but some are let off anyway, so keep to the edges with children.
A warm layer, because the walk back after 1 AM is cold in late November.
A charged phone; phones are fine on the streets, unlike inside the temple.
No bags, no valuables; pockets only.
Small cash for tea and prasad.
The car's location written down, because the lanes look the same at 1 AM.
If you stay, book Ujjain within a kilometre of Mahakal for 23 November, two to three weeks ahead, because the Monday sawari and Kartik Purnima the next day fill every room near the temple.
If you are driving back, Indore is the base, and the hotel does not matter beyond a late check-in. The Kaal Bhairav Jayanti plan shows the same evening-out, home-by-dawn pattern for the festival three weeks earlier.
Stand where Hara meets Hari, and let the driver take the road home. Har Har Mahadev, Jai Gopal.
