Indore Junction to Ujjain is about 80 km by rail, with roughly 18 trains a day, the fastest being the Avantika Express (12962), 17:45 → 18:50. Sleeper fares start around ₹175. By road it is 55 km and 1–1.25 hours, which makes a taxi the fastest door-to-door choice for Mahakal darshan.
Indore Junction (INDB) to Ujjain Junction (UJN) is a short hop on the Ratlam division, and almost every northbound express out of Indore stops at Ujjain. Timings below are the regular daily services; always confirm on NTES the night before.
| Train | Indore dep | Ujjain arr | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| MEMU 69212 | 08:10 | 09:45 | 1h 35m |
| MEMU 69214 | 10:35 | 12:20 | 1h 45m |
| Malwa Express 12919 | 12:15 | 13:45 | 1h 30m |
| Bilaspur Express 18233 | 16:10 | ~17:30 | ~1h 20m |
| Avantika Express 12962 | 17:45 | 18:50 | 1h 05m |
| Indore–Nizamuddin 12415 | 17:10 | ~18:25 | ~1h 15m |
A Ranthambore Express also leaves around 06:00 on some timetables, the earliest reserved option. The gap to notice is the morning: nothing between 08:10 and 10:35, and nothing at all before 06:00.
Fares depend on the class, not the train, so a superfast express and a mail express cost nearly the same for this distance.
MEMU (69212/69214): unreserved general ticket, the cheapest way to Ujjain by far; buy at the counter or on UTS.
Sleeper on an express: about ₹175, bookable on IRCTC, but for a 65-minute ride most Yatris take the general coach.
3AC: about ₹555; 2AC: about ₹760 on superfast trains.
Duronto 12228, when it runs: around ₹120 in the lowest class, per aggregator listings.
For comparison, a non-AC bus from Sarwate bus stand runs from about ₹75–150 and takes about 1.5 hours, and AC coaches start near ₹150–300.
On paper the Avantika wins at 65 minutes. In practice the clock starts at your hotel, not the platform:
Train: auto to Indore Junction, 30 minutes early for the general coach, 65–105 minutes on board, then an auto from Ujjain Junction to the temple. Budget 2.5 to 3 hours hotel to gate.
Bus: Sarwate stand to Nanakheda or Dewas Gate in Ujjain, about 1.5 hours, plus autos both ends. About 2.5 hours.
Taxi: 55 km on the four-lane Indore–Ujjain highway, 60–75 minutes door to door, any hour of the day or night.
The train is the right choice if you are already at the station, travelling alone, or arriving on a connecting express. For a family heading to Mahakal with luggage, the taxi is faster by an hour and costs little more per head.
The temple is open roughly 04:00 to 23:00 with no afternoon break, so unlike Omkareshwar you can arrive any time. What changes through the day is the queue.
Bhasma Aarti, 04:00–06:00: pass only, booked in advance on the temple portal; you must be inside by about 03:00. No train fits this.
Weekday mornings after the aarti crowd clears are the lightest general queues.
Mondays, weekends and festivals: general queue waits of 3 to 5 hours are reported; the ₹250 Shighra Darshan ticket cuts this to around an hour.
Sandhya aarti: 19:00–19:45 in summer, 18:30–19:15 in winter.
Ujjain Junction is a few minutes from the temple by auto. If you plan the pre-dawn aarti, read our Bhasma Aarti booking guide first and sleep in Ujjain the night before.
Alone, flexible, on a budget: MEMU 69212 at 08:10 or the Malwa at 12:15, general coach. Cheapest and pleasant.
Arriving on an express into Indore: check whether your own train continues to Ujjain; many northbound ones do, saving a change.
Evening aarti plan: Avantika at 17:45, reaching 18:50, then an auto straight to the temple.
Family, elders, luggage, or a Bhasma Aarti pass: taxi. It is the only option that leaves at 02:30.
Landing at Indore airport: skip the station entirely; the airport is on the Ujjain side of the city. Our late-night airport to Mahakal plan covers it.
Avoid banking on the last trains at 23:00 and 23:15 for a same-night darshan; by the time you reach the temple, only Shayan aarti remains.
For a Bhasma Aarti pass, stay in Ujjain within walking distance of the Mahakal Lok corridor, and book early for Mondays and Sawan. For an evening darshan and a flight the next day, Indore's hotels around Vijay Nagar and the airport road work fine, with the 55 km return taking about an hour at night.
Yatris doing both Jyotirlingas from Indore can use our Ujjain to Indore transfer guide for the way back.
Pick the train that fits your aarti, or let the driver pick the hour for you. Jai Shri Mahakal.
