Mahakal and Omkareshwar work from Indore with children of any age if you plan around the queue, an hour on a weekday but 3 to 5 hours on a Monday, and the heat. Here is a two-day pace for a six-year-old, the paid lanes worth it, and the rules on children at the aarti.
Mahakal opens around 4 am and closes about 11 pm. The free line enters through the Nandi Dwar and the Mahakal Lok corridor, a long open walk before the temple itself. On an ordinary Tuesday the wait is close to an hour; on Mondays, weekends and festivals it stretches to 3 to 5 hours.
Children do not survive the second number. The fix is two decisions:
Pick a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Nothing else you do cuts the line by as much.
Buy Sheeghra Darshan, about ₹250 a head. The paid lane runs about 45 to 60 minutes even at peak. Every child needs a pass; there is no age concession we could confirm.
| Day | Free line | Sheeghra lane |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday–Thursday | about 1 hr | 30–45 min |
| Saturday–Sunday | 2–3 hrs | about 1 hr |
| Monday or festival | 3–5 hrs | 1 hr or more |
Our Mahakal temple rules guide covers the locker, the mobile ban and the dress code, all of which matter more with a bag of children's things.
Children are allowed at the Bhasma Aarti, and the rules are specific:
Every person, including a child, needs a booked seat. One booking covers at most four people, applicant included.
For a child, the parent's ID is accepted at the gate.
Reporting is between 2:30 and 3:30 am; the aarti runs 4 to 6 am. That is up to three and a half hours seated on the floor, in silence.
Dress is dhoti for men, saree or salwar with dupatta for women; a boy in trousers is turned away like an adult.
Our honest advice: take children of ten and above. Below that, let one parent attend the aarti while the other does the 6:30 am general darshan with the child. For first-timers see the pace notes in the elderly parents post; a toddler and a grandparent need the same plan.
Omkareshwar is the gentler temple. It opens at 5 am and closes about 9:30 pm; the mangal aarti is around 5 am and no booking is needed to watch it from the hall.
Three things make it easy with children:
The bridge. The island temple is reached by a road bridge from the town side, so a pram or a sleepy child on a shoulder crosses without a boat. The boat is an option, not a requirement.
Weekend tokens. On Saturdays and Sundays the trust issues free darshan tokens online, bookable up to a week ahead and at least a day before. It is not compulsory, but the token line is the short line.
VIP darshan at about ₹300 on days when the free line is long.
Skip the 7 km parikrama of the Omkar hill with children under twelve. A fit adult does it in about 90 minutes, but there are two staircase climbs and almost no shade; with stops it runs to three hours.
Day 1, 5:00 am — leave Indore. The 55 km to Ujjain takes about 1 hr 30 min; children sleep in the car.
6:45 am — Sheeghra Darshan at Mahakal, out by about 8 am.
8:30 am — breakfast, then Harsiddhi on foot and Kal Bhairav by car.
11:30 am — back to the hotel in Ujjain, rest through the heat.
4:30 pm — Ram Ghat for the evening aarti on the Kshipra, a children's favourite.
Day 2, 7:00 am — the 140 km, 3 to 4 hour drive to Omkareshwar, with a stop at Indore if anyone needs it.
11:00 am — darshan over the bridge, then Mamleshwar on the town side, about a kilometre away.
2:30 pm — the 78–81 km, 2 to 2.5 hour run back to Indore.
The two-day Jyotirlinga itinerary is the same frame without the rests; this version trades the Bhasma Aarti for a sleeping child.
Toddlers and under-fives: one temple a day, Sheeghra Darshan both days, the car parked as close as the barricades allow. Nothing before 6 am.
Six to ten: the plan above. Add the Ram Ghat aarti; drop Kal Bhairav if the morning ran long.
Ten and above: one parent and the older child do the Bhasma Aarti; the rest join at 6:30 am. Let them walk the Mahakal Lok corridor in daylight on the way out.
Avoid: Mondays, Shravan, Mahashivratri week and the Diwali weekend. The wait doubles and the barricades keep prams out of the lanes.
Stay in Ujjain on night 1, within a kilometre of Gate 4 so the morning walk is short. Pick a hotel over a dharamshala if you need a lift, a cot or a late checkout; the dharamshalas are clean but spare.
For night 2, sleep in Omkareshwar only if you want the 5 am aarti. Otherwise drive back to Indore, where family rooms and air-conditioning are easier to find and cheaper on a weekday.
Take the slower version, and the children will ask to come back. Har Har Mahadev.
