Yes — both Jyotirlingas fit into one weekend from Mumbai or Pune if you fly to Indore. Land on Saturday morning, take Mahakaleshwar darshan in Ujjain by noon, sleep in Ujjain, reach Omkareshwar on Sunday morning and be back at Indore airport by about 4:15 PM. One car and one driver cover all 290 km.
Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is the gateway for both temples. Neither Ujjain nor Omkareshwar has an airport of its own.
From Mumbai: IndiGo and Air India fly nonstop. Schedule listings we checked this month show about 6–7 nonstop flights a day, with a flying time of 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 40 min. Flights are spread from early morning to late evening.
From Pune: IndiGo flies nonstop in about 1 hr to 1 hr 30 min. The number of flights changes by day — listings range from about 13 to over 30 a week — so check your exact Saturday before you fix the plan.
Two rules make the weekend work:
Saturday: land in Indore by about 8:30 AM. The car leaves at 9:00 AM.
Sunday: book a flight that departs after 6:15 PM. The car reaches the airport at about 4:15 PM, and you want two hours in hand.
If the first Saturday flight from your city lands too late, fly on Friday night and sleep in Indore. The pickup can then be from your hotel.
Trains cost you few working hours either — you leave on Friday and wake up in Madhya Pradesh.
| Train | Leaves | Ujjain | Indore | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12961 Avantika Express | Mumbai Central 8:55 PM | 7:30 AM | 9:05 AM | Daily |
| 12227 Duronto Express | Mumbai Central 11:10 PM | — | 10:20 AM | 2 days a week |
| 22943 Daund–Indore Express | Pune 3:33 PM | 6:25 AM | 8:25 AM | Daily |
The Avantika also stops at Borivali at about 9:21 PM, which suits the western suburbs. The Pune train leaves in the afternoon, so it needs a half day off on Friday.
Coming back, the Avantika (12962) leaves Indore at 5:45 PM and reaches Mumbai Central at 6:40 AM on Monday. That fits a 4:15 PM drop at Indore Junction comfortably.
The Pune return (22944) leaves Indore at 4:30 PM, which is too tight after Omkareshwar. Pune Yatris should fly back, or start Sunday earlier.
This is the plan our 2-day Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar package follows.
Saturday — Indore to Ujjain
9:00 AM — pickup at Indore airport, Indore Junction or your hotel.
10:15 AM — reach Ujjain, drop bags at your hotel.
11:30 AM — Mahakaleshwar darshan, then Mahakal Lok. Keep about 2 hours.
2:00 PM — lunch.
3:00 PM — Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath temples.
5:00 PM — Harsiddhi Mata temple.
6:30 PM — evening aarti on the Shipra at Ram Ghat, then back to the hotel.
Sunday — Ujjain to Omkareshwar to Indore
6:30 AM — leave Ujjain. Omkareshwar is about 140 km, roughly 3.5 hours.
10:00 AM — Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan on Mandhata island.
12:00 PM — Mamleshwar temple and the Narmada ghat on the south bank.
1:00 PM — lunch.
2:00 PM — drive to Indore, about 80 km and 2 hr 15 min.
4:15 PM — drop at Indore airport or station.
Saturday is a busy day at Mahakaleshwar, so plan the queue before you land.
The temple opens at about 4 AM for the Bhasma Aarti and darshan runs till late evening.
The free queue usually takes 2–5 hours on a normal day.
The ₹250 fast-track ticket through Gate 4 cuts that to roughly 15–40 minutes. On a one-night trip, it is worth it.
Mobile phones are not allowed inside. The official locker outside Gate 4 charges ₹20.
Our Mahakaleshwar temple logistics guide covers the gates, lockers and dress code in full.
The Bhasma Aarti booking guide explains the booking window step by step.
Omkareshwar follows a fixed daily timetable published by the temple trust.
5:00 AM – 12:20 PM — morning darshan
12:20 – 1:15 PM — closed for the midday bhog
1:15 – 4:00 PM — afternoon darshan
4:30 – 9:30 PM — evening darshan
Leaving Ujjain at 6:30 AM puts you in the queue by 10 AM, well before the break. The trust's Shighra Darshan ticket is ₹300.
The temple stands on an island. You walk across the 235-metre Mamleshwar Setu or the older 200-metre bridge, or take a boat from the ghat and pay the boatman there. For the road itself, see our Ujjain to Omkareshwar guide.
Both overnight trains stop at Ujjain Junction before Indore — the Avantika at 7:30 AM and the Pune train at 6:25 AM. Getting down there saves the 55 km drive back from Indore.
Choose by how you travel:
Flying both ways: start and end in Indore. The 2-day package is built for exactly this.
Avantika from Mumbai, both ways: get down at Ujjain on Saturday and spend the day around Mahakaleshwar. On Sunday, take a car from Ujjain to Omkareshwar and on to Indore Junction for the 5:45 PM train.
Train from Pune: get down at Ujjain at 6:25 AM, but fly home on Sunday evening.
With elders or small children: fly. A night in a train berth before a long temple day is tiring.
Avoid a same-day return to Ujjain from Omkareshwar on Sunday. It adds 140 km and leaves no margin for your train.
October to February is the comfortable season, with cool mornings and mild afternoons. Carry a light woollen layer for the early Sunday start.
Two dates in the next few weeks bring heavy crowds:
Diwali — Sunday, 8 November 2026. Flights and trains that weekend fill early.
Kartik Purnima — Tuesday, 24 November 2026. Ujjain's ghats are packed for the holy dip, and the weekend before it is busy too.
For a calmer darshan, pick a weekend that touches neither. Avoid adding Monday as an extra day; Mondays draw the heaviest Shiva-temple crowds of the week.
Sleep in Ujjain, not Indore. Sunday starts at 6:30 AM, and a room in Ujjain keeps Mahakaleshwar close for an evening walk through Mahakal Lok.
Look for a hotel within a 5–10 minute walk of Gate 4. Ask for a room on a lower floor if anyone in the group has knee trouble. If you land on Friday night, a hotel near Indore airport or station is enough.
Two Jyotirlingas, one night away, and you are back at work on Monday. Har Har Mahadev.
