Madurai to Rameswaram is about 173 km on NH 87 via Manamadurai, Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by car. The daily 56713 passenger leaves Madurai Junction at 1:00 pm and reaches Rameswaram at 4:45 pm over the new Pamban bridge. The timing that matters is the temple's: Ramanathaswamy shuts from 1 pm to 3 pm.
NH 87 runs Madurai → Manamadurai → Paramakudi → Ramanathapuram → Rameswaram, about 173 km with tolls on the way. Cab operators quote 3 hours of driving; count 3.5 with a tea stop and the Pamban road bridge, which crawls when the wind is up.
Do not let navigation send you via Aruppukottai and Valinokkam. That road is about 220 km and 4 hours, and it passes no temple worth the detour.
Two temples sit just off the highway near Ramanathapuram. Thiruppullani is 10 km from the town, and Devipattinam is 15 km off, about 65 km before Rameswaram. Both fit in the drive down if you leave Madurai by 5:30 am.
| How you go | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car on NH 87 | ~3–3.5 hrs | 173 km, tolls, temple stops possible |
| 56713 passenger | 3 hrs 45 min | 1:00 pm → 4:45 pm, daily, unreserved |
| 56715 passenger | ~3 hrs 45 min | about 6:30 pm → 10:15 pm, daily |
| 16343 Amrita Express | ~3 hrs | Madurai about 9:50 am → Rameswaram about 12:45 pm |
| 22622 Cape–Rameswaram SF | 3 hrs 15 min | 3:00 am → 6:15 am, Mon/Wed/Fri |
| TNSTC / private bus | ~3.5 hrs | from Mattuthavani stand, through the day |
The 56713 Madurai–Rameswaram passenger is the dependable one: 1:00 pm from Madurai Junction, a five-minute halt at Manamadurai at 1:50 pm, and Rameswaram at 4:45 pm. It is unreserved, so reach the platform 30 minutes early for a window seat on the sea side.
The evening 56715 leaves around 6:30 pm and reaches about 10:15 pm; timetables show it a few minutes apart, so confirm on NTES the day before. The 16343 Amrita Express from Thiruvananthapuram was extended to Rameswaram in October 2025 and passes Madurai mid-morning.
The new Pamban bridge opened in April 2025 after trains stopped in December 2022. It is 2.07 km long, with a 72.5 m lift span that rises 17 m in about five and a half minutes for ships. Rameswaram station is about 2 km from the temple; autos wait outside.
The temple is open 5 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 9 pm. The spatika linga darshan, when a crystal linga is placed before the main linga, happens around 5 to 6 am and draws the first queue of the day.
The traditional sequence is a dip at Agni Theertham on the beach east of the temple, then the 22 theerthams inside; the counter ticket is ₹25 per person. The bath window runs roughly 5:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm. Carry dry clothes; wet clothes are not allowed near the sanctum.
Paid darshan queues exist and prices vary with the queue, broadly ₹100 to ₹200. Buy only at the temple counter, never from a tout at the car park. Mobiles stay outside, and shorts are not accepted.
Thiruppullani Adi Jagannatha Perumal, 10 km from Ramanathapuram: the Darbhasayanam shrine where Rama rested on kusha grass before the crossing. Twenty minutes off the highway and back.
Devipattinam Navabashanam, 15 km from Ramanathapuram: nine Navagraha stones standing in the sea, worshipped from a short causeway. Poojas are easiest at low tide, so ask the driver to check the time.
Dhanushkodi, 18 to 20 km beyond Rameswaram to Arichal Munai where the road ends: open about 6 am to 6 pm, with the Kothandaramaswamy Temple on the way. Fit it after the morning darshan, not before.
With elderly parents: car, out of Madurai by 5:30 am, Thiruppullani on the way, at the temple by 9 am for the theerthams while the queues are short.
On a budget: the 56713 at 1 pm, evening darshan between 6 and 8 pm, the spatika linga at 5 am next morning, and a morning train back.
Day trip, no night in Rameswaram: leave Madurai at 5 am, darshan done by noon, Dhanushkodi from 2 to 4 pm, back in Madurai by 9 pm.
For Karthigai Deepam: it falls on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, with lamps at both Meenakshi and Ramanathaswamy. Rooms go weeks ahead.
Avoid: reaching Rameswaram between 1 and 3 pm, when the temple is shut and the car park bakes.
Stay the night in Rameswaram if the 5 am spatika linga darshan matters to you. Rooms within a kilometre of the east gopuram let you walk to Agni Theertham in the dark, and the Devasthanam cottages fill first.
Otherwise return to Madurai the same evening. Meenakshi Amman opens around 4:30 to 5 am and closes between 9:30 and 10 pm, so the next morning begins there. If Kanyakumari is also on the list, our Madurai–Rameswaram–Kanyakumari 4-day route shows where each night goes.
Reach before the 1 pm bell, bathe in all 22 theerthams, and take darshan unhurried. Om Namah Shivaya.
