Madurai is the right place to start a Meenakshi, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari yatra: it has the airport, the big junction, and the first temple is 2 km from the station.
The loop is roughly 730 km of road over three days, with one night at Rameswaram and one at Kanyakumari. This plan puts the Spatika lingam, the 22-theertham bath and the Kumari Amman dawn darshan in the right order, so nothing closes on you.
Three legs, and only one of them is long. The Rameswaram to Kanyakumari drive is the leg that decides whether your plan works.
| Leg | Road | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madurai → Rameswaram | NH87 via Ramanathapuram and the Pamban road bridge | about 176 km | 3 to 3.5 hrs |
| Rameswaram → Kanyakumari | NH32 via Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli | about 310 km | about 6 hrs |
| Kanyakumari → Madurai | NH44 | about 245 km | 4.5 to 5 hrs |
The Madurai to Rameswaram leg also runs by rail over the new Pamban lift bridge, opened in April 2025. Train 56711 leaves Madurai Junction at 07:00 and reaches Rameswaram around 10:25, unreserved, daily. A taxi does the same in three hours and then carries you onward, which is why most families drive the whole loop.
Land or arrive by train in the morning and go straight to the temple. Meenakshi Amman opens at about 05:00 and closes at 12:30, then reopens at 16:00 until around 21:30.
Queue: the free line takes one to three hours in season. The special darshan ticket is ₹50 for one shrine and ₹100 for both Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, and the queue is shortest between 05:00 and 07:00.
Gate: the East gopuram is the usual entrance. During the Maha Kumbabhishekam on 17 September 2026 the temple routed entry through the West and South towers, so ask your driver which gate is live.
Leave by 14:00. That puts you in Rameswaram by about 17:30, in time for the evening Sayaratcha pooja at 18:00 and a look at the east gate before tomorrow's early start.
The temple had its first Kumbabhishekam in 17 years this September, so every mandapam is open again. The 1,000-pillar hall is inside the complex and costs nothing extra.
This is the day the whole yatra is built around, and it starts in the dark. Ask the driver to drop you at the east gate at 04:30.
Spatika lingam darshan, about 05:00 to 06:00. The crystal lingam is shown only in this early slot. The ticket is around ₹50, sold at the temple counter only, never online.
Agni Theertham. Walk out of the east gate to the sea and take the dip. This is the customary first bath.
22 theertham, ₹25. The bathing window is about 05:30 to 12:30 and again 15:00 to 19:00. Attendants draw water from each well and pour it over you, from Mahalakshmi Theertham to Kodi Theertham.
Change into dry clothes. Wet clothes are not allowed into the sanctum. Carry a full dry set and a bag for the wet one.
Main darshan of Ramanathaswamy and Parvathavardhini, then the long corridors.
Kothandaramaswamy Temple on the Dhanushkodi road, about 12 km out, is a worthwhile stop where Vibhishana is said to have surrendered to Rama. Keep it to 45 minutes and be on the road to Kanyakumari by 11:00.
Sunrise over the sea is at about 06:20 in November and December, and the Bhagavathy Amman temple is already open. The temple's morning session runs roughly 04:30 to 12:30, and the evening session 16:00 to about 20:00.
Men enter bare-chested. Shirts and vests come off before the inner precinct. A dhoti is easiest; trousers are allowed.
Ticket: general darshan is free, and a ₹20 special darshan ticket moves you up the line.
The nose-ring: the diamond on the deity's nose is the darshan people come for. Ask for the front line of the special queue.
Vivekananda Rock is a short ferry hop, open about 08:00 to 16:00, booked on the Poompuhar Shipping portal. It is a stop, not the subject; give it 90 minutes or skip it.
Leave Kanyakumari by 11:00 and you are in Madurai by about 16:00. If you missed a Meenakshi session on Day 1, the evening opening at 16:00 is your second chance before a night train or a late flight.
Camera phones. From 1 September 2026 Tamil Nadu restricted camera phones inside 52 major temples, including Meenakshi and Ramanathaswamy. Counters at the gate take the phone for a ₹5 token. Later notices eased this to "switched off, no photos", but counters still operate, so plan to hand it in.
Dress. Men in full-length trousers or dhoti, no shorts or sleeveless; women with shoulders and legs covered. This has been on the notice boards at Meenakshi and Rameswaram for years and is enforced at the gate.
Festival dates to know. Arudra Darshan at Rameswaram falls on 24 December 2026. Thai Poosam, when Madurai's float festival begins, is 22 January 2027. Thai Amavasai, 5 to 6 February 2027, brings over a lakh people to Agni Theertham for tarpanam.
With elderly parents: run the loop the other way, Madurai to Kanyakumari first. The last day is then the short 176 km from Rameswaram, and the theertham bath comes on a rested morning. Read our Jyotirlinga yatra with elderly parents for pacing that works at Rameswaram too.
On a budget: take train 56711 to Rameswaram and hire the taxi from there. Our four-day Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari route breaks down what each night costs.
On a tight schedule: skip Kothandaramaswamy and the ferry. The three temples alone fit the three days comfortably.
Avoid: arriving at Rameswaram after 06:00 on Day 2, and any plan that drives Rameswaram to Kanyakumari after dark.
Sleep near the gate you have to reach before dawn. At Rameswaram that means within a kilometre of the east gate, where simple rooms run about ₹2,400 to ₹3,800 and better ones around ₹5,500 to ₹6,500.
At Kanyakumari the sunrise-point hotels start around ₹750 to ₹2,500 for a basic room, and mid-range resorts a few kilometres out from about ₹7,000.
In Madurai, rooms on the Masi streets near the West tower run ₹900 to ₹2,000 for budget and ₹5,500 to ₹10,000 for the heritage and business hotels. Book Rameswaram first; it fills up on Pradosham and Amavasai days.
Three temples, two seas and one road: start at Madurai, and let the driver worry about the kilometres. Om Namah Shivaya.
