Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri opens at about 5 am and closes after Pahuda at roughly 10:30–11 pm, but darshan is not continuous. The sanctum shuts for Madhyahna Pahuda from about 1 to 2 pm, and the closest free darshan is Sahana Mela around 7–8 am. Only Hindus may enter, and smartphones stay outside.
The temple runs on rituals, not on a clock. Servitors say the prescribed times are often not met, and festival days add extra rites that shift everything. Treat the table below as the normal order and the usual hour, then ask at Singhadwara on the day.
| Ritual | Usual time | Darshan? |
|---|---|---|
| Dwara Phita and Mangala Alati | ~5:00–5:30 am | Open after the aarti |
| Mailam, Abakasha | ~6:00–6:30 am | Open |
| Sahana Mela | ~7:00–8:00 am | Open, closest free darshan |
| Gopala Ballava, Sakala Dhupa | ~9:00–10:00 am | Closed during the offering |
| Madhyahna Dhupa | ~11 am–1 pm | Closed during the offering |
| Madhyahna Pahuda | ~1:00–2:00 pm | Closed |
| Sandhya Alati, Sandhya Dhupa | ~6:00–8:00 pm | Closed during the offering |
| Badasinghara Besha and Dhupa | ~9:30–10:30 pm |
The dhupa offerings are when the deities are fed, and darshan pauses for each one. The best general darshan is between the offerings: after Mangala Alati, after Sakala Dhupa, after the midday Pahuda, and after Badasinghara.
Only Hindus are allowed inside the complex, and the rule is enforced at the gate. Non-Hindu companions can see the Nilachakra from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite Singhadwara.
A dress code has applied at all four gates since 1 January 2024. Shorts, half pants, torn jeans, skirts and sleeveless tops are turned away. Sarees, salwar-kameez, kurtas, dhotis and full-length trousers with a shirt are fine. Gutkha, paan and plastic are banned on the premises.
In April 2026 the Odisha State Law Commission proposed a stricter traditional dress code. It is a recommendation, not a rule, so dress as above and watch for notices.
Smartphones and cameras are not allowed inside. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration enforced a full smartphone ban from 1 January 2023, with a ₹1,000 fine, and in October 2025 its security sub-committee reaffirmed a complete ban covering visitors, servitors and police.
Cloakrooms: free counters outside Singhadwara and near the north gate take phones, bags and footwear. Keep the token safe.
Leather: belts, wallets and leather bags stay in the cloakroom.
Footwear and umbrellas: off before the gate.
Carry in: cash for Mahaprasad and dakshina, in a cloth pouch.
Entry is through Singhadwara, the Lion Gate on the east, up the 22 steps of Baisi Pahacha. Exit is through the other three gates. Inside, barricades route the line past the sanctum.
The Odisha government has asked IIT Bhubaneswar to design a queue system handling up to 10,000 Yatris an hour, and a trial slot-booking system has been announced alongside the normal queue.
There is no VIP ticket. A ticketed afternoon window called Parimanik Darshan, at about ₹100, has come and gone over the years and is sometimes sold around 2:30–3:30 pm. Do not plan a trip around it; plan around Sahana Mela.
Mahaprasad is sold only at Ananda Bazar, the open courtyard inside the outer wall, after it has been offered to the deities. Cooked rice, dal, dalma and kheer from the Madhyahna Dhupa reach the bazar at roughly 1:30–3:30 pm; that is the main window for a full meal.
Abadha (cooked meal): bought by the pot from the Suara servitors. Thali slabs of about ₹70–120 have been announced in the past, but no rate chart is posted, so agree the price before you sit.
Sukhili Bhog (dry): khaja and other sweets are sold through most of the day, from around ₹20 a pot.
Eat it there. Mahaprasad is eaten seated in the bazar; take-away is for dry items only.
With elderly parents: enter after Mangala Alati, around 5:30–6:30 am. The queue is shortest and the stairs are cool.
On a tight schedule from Bhubaneswar: leave the airport by 5 am for Sahana Mela, or arrive after 2:30 pm and combine darshan with Mahaprasad.
On a budget: everything above is free; the only costs are Mahaprasad and the cloakroom tip.
Avoid: arriving between 12:30 and 2 pm, Rath Yatra fortnight, and the Anasara closure (about 18 June to 5 July 2027, when the deities are not seen).
Our Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar plan fits this darshan into three days.
Stay within a kilometre of the Grand Road if you want Sahana Mela without a 5 am taxi. Puri station is about 3 km from the temple, and Bhubaneswar airport about 60 km, or 1.5–2 hours by road. Swargadwar and the beach hotels are 2–3 km away and fine for a second night.
Walk in after Mangala Alati, eat at Ananda Bazar after the midday offering, and the day falls into place. Jai Jagannath.
