Rajkot to Somnath is about 190 km by road, a drive of roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours south through Gondal, Jetpur, Junagadh and Veraval. Leave Rajkot by 1 pm and you reach Somnath in time for the 7 pm Sandhya Aarti and the Jay Somnath light and sound show that follows it.
You leave Rajkot south on NH-27, the main highway towards Gondal and Jetpur. At Jetpur you turn off for Junagadh, then run through Keshod to Veraval. Somnath sits on the coast just past Veraval town, in Prabhas Patan.
| Leg | Distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Rajkot → Gondal | about 38 km | 40 min |
| Gondal → Virpur | about 17 km | 20 min |
| Virpur → Junagadh (via Jetpur) | about 45 km | 1 hr |
| Junagadh → Somnath (via Keshod, Veraval) | about 90–95 km | 1 hr 45 min |
| Total | about 190 km | 3.5 to 4.5 hrs with one stop |
Map apps show a little under 3 hours of pure driving. A stop at Virpur, tea at Junagadh and slow traffic through Veraval add an hour for most families.
The road home is the same in reverse. Our Dwarka & Somnath package from Rajkot uses it on the last day, with lunch at Junagadh and drop-off in Rajkot by late afternoon.
Virpur is about 55 km from Rajkot, right on the highway between Gondal and Jetpur. It is the village of Jalaram Bapa, the saint whose sadavrat has fed every visitor since the 1820s.
The temple has not accepted any donation since 9 February 2000 — no cash, no offering in kind. Free prasad and food are still served to all who come.
Plan 30 to 45 minutes here. The temple usually opens in two sessions, roughly 7 am to noon and 4 pm to 8:30 pm, so an afternoon departure from Rajkot may find the doors shut. Morning travellers have the easier visit; on the return leg it fits after lunch.
Darshan is open roughly from 6 am to 9:30 pm, without an afternoon closure. Three aartis are the fixed points of the day:
| Event | Time |
|---|---|
| Doors open | about 6 am |
| Morning aarti | 7 am |
| Madhyan aarti | 12 noon |
| Sandhya aarti | 7 pm |
| Jay Somnath light and sound show | 7:45 pm to 8:45 pm |
| Doors close | about 9:30 pm |
The show is narrated against the temple's own walls and tells the story of its destruction and rebuilding. Tickets are sold at the counter inside the complex; the show is usually paused during the monsoon.
For the morning, stay the night and take the 7 am aarti before driving on. It is far less crowded than the evening one.
Three short stops complete the Somnath darshan, all within a few kilometres in Prabhas Patan:
Bhalka Tirth — where Shri Krishna was struck by the hunter's arrow.
Triveni Sangam — the meeting of the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers before the sea.
Gita Mandir — near the Dehotsarg site by the Hiran river.
Phones, cameras and bags must be deposited at the cloakroom before security. Since 2011 the Shree Somnath Trust bans shorts and short skirts inside; dress as you would for any Jyotirlinga.
The Trust also warns that its rooms, poojas and donations are booked only through somnath.org or its counters. Anyone asking for UPI payment on WhatsApp is not the Trust.
With elders: a private car, Virpur in the morning, Somnath by 5 pm and a night near the temple. No bus changes at Junagadh or Veraval.
On a tight schedule: leave Rajkot by 1 pm, take Sandhya Aarti and the show, sleep, take the 7 am aarti and drive back.
On a budget: GSRTC buses and trains run to Veraval, about 6 km from the temple. They work for one or two people with light bags.
What to avoid: doing Somnath as a same-day return from Rajkot. Nearly 400 km of driving leaves you rushed at the aarti and on the highway late at night.
Most yatris pair this with Dwarka, about 235 km up the coast through Porbandar. Our Rajkot to Dwarka route guide covers that leg, and the 4-day Dwarka Somnath plan joins them up.
Diwali — Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Gujarati New Year on 9 November.
Kartik Purnima fair at Somnath — 21 to 24 November 2026. The Trust's five-day fair runs from Dev Diwali to Kartik Purnima on Tuesday 24 November, with a midnight mahapooja on the full-moon night.
October afternoons are still warm on the coast. December to February is the most comfortable time, and the sea wind at the evening aarti can turn cold enough for a shawl.
Stay within walking distance of the temple so the evening aarti, the show and the 7 am aarti are all a short walk. Prabhas Patan around the temple is better for this than Veraval town, which is about 6 km away.
During the Kartik Purnima fair, rooms near the temple fill well ahead. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, and for the Trust's own rooms use only the official website.
May the evening aarti by the sea at Somnath stay with you long after the drive home. Har Har Mahadev.
