Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, and Somnath marks it with the Shree Somnath Trust's Lokmela, which Gujarat Tourism lists for 21 to 24 November. The high point is the Mahapuja at midnight on Purnima night, when the moon is believed to rest on the shikhar of the Jyotirlinga.
Rajkot is only 190 km away, so this is the one Somnath festival you can reach after lunch and still see in full.
In Gujarat, Dev Diwali is the Kartik Sud Ekadashi, not the Purnima, and that is why the Somnath fair starts days before the full moon. The Trust describes it as a five-day Lokmela it has run for about seven decades. Gujarat Tourism's 2026 listing gives 21 to 24 November, so expect the fair ground to be busy from the Saturday.
| Day | Date (2026) | What it means at Somnath |
|---|---|---|
| Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi | Friday, 20 November | Dev Diwali in Gujarat; lamps and the first big evening crowds |
| Tulsi Vivah | Saturday, 21 November | Lokmela opens — cultural programme, special archana |
| Fair days | 21–24 November | Stalls, bhajan mandalis, lakhs of diyas around the mandir |
| Kartik Purnima | Tuesday, 24 November | Triveni snan at dawn, Mahapuja and Mahaarti at midnight |
The Purnima tithi begins at 11:42 pm on 23 November and ends at 8:23 pm on 24 November. Snan is done at dawn on the 24th. The exact programme is announced by the Trust a few days ahead, so check it before you fix a late-night plan.
Somnath is the first Jyotirlinga, and its story belongs to the moon. Chandra, cursed by Daksha to wane, worshipped Shiva here and was restored — Prabhas Patan is where the moon regained his light. On Kartik Purnima the belief is that Chandra sits on the shikhar at the midnight Mahapuja, and that is the moment the crowd waits for.
Evening — the 7 pm Sandhya Aarti, then diyas lit around the sabha mandap and along the sea wall.
Late evening — bhajans and the cultural programme on the mela ground beside the mandir.
Midnight — Mahapuja and Mahaarti at the Jyotirlinga. The mandir stays open for it; the Trust publishes the exact hours.
Dawn, 24 November — Kartik snan at Triveni Sangam, 1 km away, where the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati meet the sea, then darshan.
Our Ahmedabad guide to the same mela at /blog/ahmedabad/somnath-kartik-purnima-mela-2026-from-ahmedabad covers the rituals in more depth. This post is about getting there from Rajkot and back without losing a day.
The road is about 190 km via Jetpur, Junagadh and Keshod, normally 3.5 to 4 hours. On the 23rd and 24th add half an hour for the last stretch into Prabhas Patan, where police divert traffic to parking grounds outside the mandir area. Leave Rajkot by 1 pm and you are parked before the 7 pm aarti.
By train, the 22957 Somnath Express leaves Rajkot at about 1:45 am and reaches Veraval around 5:45 am — good for a dawn snan, but Veraval station is 7 km from the mandir and autos are scarce at that hour on Purnima.
The return 22958 leaves Veraval about 9:50 pm, which means missing the midnight Mahapuja. GSRTC runs about two buses a day from Rajkot to Somnath.
If you fly in, Hirasar airport is 30 km outside Rajkot on the Ahmedabad side. A midday landing still gets you to Somnath by evening.
Somnath is open 6 am to 9:30 pm on ordinary days, with aartis at 7 am, 12 noon and 7 pm. On Purnima night the mandir stays open late for the midnight Mahapuja, with the hours published by the Trust. General darshan is free; a paid VIP pass shortens the queue and is worth it on this one day.
Our timings guide at /blog/ahmedabad/somnath-darshan-timings-guide-from-ahmedabad has the rest.
5:30 am — walk to Triveni Sangam for snan before the ghat fills.
6:30 am — darshan and the 7 am aarti. Phones, bags and wallets go in the lockers outside; only a small purse goes in.
9:00 am — Bhalka Tirth and the Gita Mandir at Dehotsarg, both a short drive, both quiet while the mela ground is busy.
12 noon — Madhyan Aarti, then rest. November is 14 to 33 °C in Somnath, warm at midday, cool after dark.
6:30 pm — back at the gate for the 7 pm aarti. The light and sound show follows at about 8 pm.
11:00 pm — join the queue for the midnight Mahapuja. The dress code is enforced; cover shoulders and knees.
One night (recommended) — leave Rajkot after lunch on the 24th, aarti, Mahapuja, dawn snan on the 25th, back in Rajkot by noon.
Same day — leave Rajkot at 5 am on the 24th, 7 am aarti is tight, noon aarti is comfortable, back by 7 pm. You miss the midnight Mahapuja.
With elderly parents — arrive on the 23rd, take an unhurried darshan that evening, watch the midnight Mahapuja from the sabha mandap on the 24th rather than the queue.
With children — the mela ground and the light show at 8 pm are the hit; skip the midnight queue and do the 7 am aarti instead.
Make it a yatra — add Dwarka, Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka on the way out, as in our one-day Dwarka post at /blog/dwarka/dwarka-one-day-nageshwar-bet-dwarka.
Avoid — arriving after 6 pm on the 24th. Parking is far out, the queue is already long, and you reach the gate tired.
The Trust guest houses — Lilavati, Sagar Darshan and Maheshwari — are a few minutes' walk from the gate. Simple non-AC rooms start around ₹400–600 and AC rooms from about ₹900, and they are the first to go for the Purnima week. Book through the Trust's own counters or portal, never through a caller asking for an advance.
If Somnath is full, Veraval is 7 km away with more hotels, and a taxi makes that distance irrelevant at midnight. Avoid rooms beyond Veraval; the mela-day traffic turns a short drive into an hour.
One afternoon's drive from Rajkot buys you the moon on the shikhar of the first Jyotirlinga. Har Har Mahadev.
