Ramanathaswamy Temple is open 5 am to 1 pm and 3 to 9 pm, and the morning has a fixed order: a sea dip at Agni Theertham, the 22 theertham bath on a ₹25 ticket, a change into dry clothes, then the sanctum.
Before all of that, at about 5 am, the Spatika Linga is shown for an hour, and the queue for it forms from 3:30 am.
Here is the timeline from the beach to the Ramanathaswamy sanctum, with what each step costs.
The temple keeps two sessions with a two-hour afternoon closure. The pooja times below are the schedule reported by Yatri guides and reviews; the HR&CE board at the east entrance is the final word and shifts on festival days.
| Time | Pooja |
|---|---|
| 5:00 am | Palliyarai deepa aradhana, temple opens |
| 5:10 am | Spatika Linga deepa aradhana |
| 5:45 am | Thiruvananthal deepa aradhana |
| 7:00 am | Vila pooja |
| 10:00 am | Kalasanthi pooja |
| 12:00 noon | Uchikala pooja, then closure at 1 pm |
| 3:00 pm | Temple reopens |
| 6:00 pm | Sayaratchai pooja |
| 8:30 pm | Arthajama pooja |
| 8:45 pm | Palliyarai pooja, temple closes at 9 pm |
The useful gap is between Thiruvananthal and Kalasanthi: from about 6 to 10 am the sanctum is open and the theertham crowd is still outside. Arrive at the beach by 4:30 am and you ride that window.
A small crystal lingam, gifted by the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in 2021, is placed before the main lingam and worshipped at about 5 am every day while the main lingam remains covered. Yatris call it Mani darshan. It runs for roughly an hour.
Three practical points:
The queue forms from 3:30 to 4 am, before the temple opens, and it is tightly packed. In March 2025 an elderly Yatri from Rajasthan died waiting in this line.
There is a small ticket, reported at around ₹50 a head. It is not free.
Go straight from the hotel, dry, and do the theerthams afterwards. The crystal darshan cannot be combined with a wet-clothes entry.
If you are travelling with elders, skip the crystal line and come for the 6 to 10 am window instead.
The 22 wells sit inside the temple's corridors, and the bath is the ritual most first-timers ask about. The order on the morning is fixed by custom:
Dip in the sea at Agni Theertham, the beach outside the east gate. Customary, not compulsory.
Walk to the North gate and buy the theertham ticket, ₹25 per person.
Temple attendants draw a bucket from each well and pour it over you. Helpers at the gate ask ₹150 to ₹250 for guiding a family through all 22; the ticket itself covers the water.
The sequence starts at Mahalakshmi theertham and ends at Kodi theertham, with Savitri, Gayatri, Saraswathi, Sethu Madhava, Gandhamadhana, Ganga, Yamuna, Gaya and the rest between.
Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on the crowd. On Thai Amavasai some wells are closed for safety.
Bathing in all 22 is not a condition of darshan. Plenty of Yatris do the sanctum only, and the temple does not stop them.
The temple will not let you into the sanctum in wet clothes. After the 22nd well you change in the designated area before the inner prakaram, so a dry dhoti or saree in a plastic bag is the one thing you must carry.
Dress: dhoti or trousers for men, saree or salwar for women. Shorts and sleeveless tops are turned away under the Tamil Nadu temple dress code.
Lockers: a counter near the eastern entrance takes bags, cameras and phones for a token fee, about ₹5 per item.
Shoes: off at the stands outside the east gate, before Agni Theertham.
General darshan is free. A special darshan ticket is sold at the temple counters; Yatri reports from 2026 put it at about ₹200, with a ₹50 to ₹100 tier also mentioned, so treat the exact figure as something to read at the counter. Buy only from the temple counters, never from anyone outside.
The HR&CE department has said it wants e-entry tickets and more online darshan slots at its big temples, and some Yatris report a separate online-ticket queue at Rameswaram. Check the HR&CE site for the temple before you travel, and do not assume a paid ticket shortens the theertham bath, which has one line for everyone.
4:15 am at Agni Theertham. Sea dip, shoes left at the stand.
4:45 am North gate, theertham ticket, start at Mahalakshmi.
6:00 am out of Kodi theertham, change into dry clothes.
6:15 am sanctum darshan during the open window after Thiruvananthal.
7:30 am the third corridor, about 1,212 pillars and roughly 1.2 km long, now empty of the bathing crowd.
8:30 am breakfast, then Gandhamadhana Parvatham 3 km away and Dhanushkodi 18 km out by noon.
With elders: skip the crystal darshan line and the sea dip. Theertham ticket, dry change, 7 am sanctum. Wheelchairs manage the corridors but not the wells.
On a budget: ₹25 for the theerthams, free darshan, a ₹5 locker. The only real cost is the room.
On a tight schedule: sanctum only in the 6 to 10 am window, then the road to Dhanushkodi, then the afternoon train.
Wanting the full ritual: the night before in Rameshwaram, the 3:30 am crystal line, then the theerthams, then darshan. It is a five-hour morning.
Avoid: Thai Amavasai on 5 February 2027 and Maha Shivaratri on 6 March 2027 unless the festival is the point; over a lakh come for the Amavasai bath with a thousand police on duty. Karthigai Deepam on 24 November 2026 is the next big evening.
For a 4 am start you need a room within a kilometre of the east gate, on the temple side of town rather than by the station.
Rameswaram station is about 1 to 2 km from the temple, Madurai is about 170 km and three and a half to four hours by road, with the 56723 and 56725 passengers taking about 3 hours 40 minutes.
If Rameshwaram is one stop of a southern loop, our Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari route sets the nights out in order.
Be on the beach before the sky lightens, and the whole temple opens to you in the right order. Har Har Mahadev.
