Planning to travel from Mumbai to Trimbakeshwar for Jyotirlinga darshan? It's about 180 km, roughly a 4 to 5 hour journey — but there's one thing worth knowing before you book anything: there is no direct train or bus to Trimbakeshwar itself. You travel from Mumbai to Nashik, then cover the last 28–30 km by road. This guide walks through every option — taxi, train and bus — with fares, times and the best pick for your trip.
At a glance
Distance: ~180 km (170–190 km depending on route) · about 4–5 hours by road.
The catch: no direct train/bus to Trimbakeshwar — go via Nashik, then ~28–30 km onward.
Fastest & easiest: a direct taxi (great for same-day darshan and families).
Cheapest: train to Nashik Road (e.g. Panchavati Express), then a short road transfer.
Trimbakeshwar has no railway station or long-distance bus terminal of its own. Whichever way you travel from Mumbai, you'll pass through Nashik (either Nashik Road railway station or Nashik CBS bus stand), and then cover the final 28–30 km to Trimbakeshwar by taxi, bus or shared auto. Don't assume your journey ends at Nashik — plan for that last leg. The only way to go door-to-door is a direct taxi.
The road route runs about 180 km via Thane, the Kasara Ghat and Nashik (on the Mumbai–Nashik highway/NH160). A direct taxi takes roughly 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic near Thane and the ghat.
This is the easiest option — especially if you want same-day darshan, or you're travelling with elders, children or luggage, because it takes you straight to the temple with no changes. A tip from regulars: leave early in the morning so you reach in time for a calm darshan and have the day in hand.
There's no direct train to Trimbakeshwar, so you travel to Nashik Road railway station (NK) — about 28–30 km from the temple — and continue by road.
Best train: the Panchavati Express (12109) leaves Mumbai early and reaches Nashik Road by mid-morning, giving you a full day at the temple. General-class tickets can be very cheap (often under ₹200).
Several other Mumbai–Nashik trains run through the day; the ride is about 2–3 hours.
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for weekends and festivals.
From Nashik Road station, take a pre-paid auto or taxi (about 45 minutes to an hour) or a bus (1–1.5 hours) to Trimbakeshwar. Our detailed Trimbakeshwar one-day plan from Nashik covers that last leg in full.
MSRTC runs frequent buses from Mumbai to Nashik, including the comfortable Shivshahi (AC, reclining seats, fixed fare) every 30–60 minutes. The bus fare works out to around ₹475, and the ride is about 4 hours.
Most buses drop you at Nashik CBS (Central Bus Stand), from where shared autos and taxis run to Trimbakeshwar in about 40–50 minutes. A few direct Mumbai–Trimbakeshwar services exist, but check the drop point before boarding — many stop at Nashik CBS, not the temple.
If you'd rather not book a full cab, shared taxis are popular on this route:
From Dadar (TT Circle / Asiad bus stand area), shared taxis leave every 20–30 minutes once seats fill.
From Kasara, take a suburban local to Kasara station, then a shared taxi onward.
Confirm your drop point before boarding (some stop at Nashik CBS), carry exact change, and note that festival-season fares run 20–30% higher.
Direct taxi: door to door · ~4–5 hrs · most convenient
Train (to Nashik Road) + road: train often under ₹200 + ~₹700 cab · ~2–3 hrs train + ~1 hr road
Shivshahi / MSRTC bus (to Nashik) + road: ~₹475 bus + shared auto/taxi · ~4 hrs + ~45 min
Shared taxi (Dadar/Kasara): cheaper per seat · timing depends on the vehicle filling
Fares vary by operator, season and demand — treat these as planning estimates, and expect higher prices during festivals.
