Trimbakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the source of the Godavari and one of Shiva's most revered abodes. This guide covers what a Yatri actually needs to plan a smooth darshan: timings, aartis, VIP pass, and the sabha mandap vs garbha griha rules that surprise most first-time visitors.
The temple is open daily 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM for general darshan.
Four aartis anchor the day. Times are approximate — the trust adjusts slightly for festival days, so confirm at the entrance on your visit day.
Kakad Aarti (dawn) — around 5:30 AM, roughly 45 minutes
Madhyahna Pooja (midday) — around noon (exact slot varies)
Sandhya Aarti (evening) — around 7:00 PM, roughly 45 minutes
Shej Aarti (night, deity to rest) — around 9:00 PM
Daily Abhishek (milk, honey, ghee, sacred water) starts around 7:00 AM.
The garbha griha (inner sanctum) is closed to the general public during regular hours. Historically, only men wearing traditional silk "sovala" dhotis could enter the core. Following a 2016 Bombay High Court order and the trust's subsequent policy, current practice bars both men and women from the inner sanctum during general hours. Men are additionally barred from the core between 6:00–7:00 AM daily for temple ritual.
What every Yatri gets: Sabha mandap darshan — you view the jyotirlinga from just outside the garbha griha, through the mandap. This is the standard experience. Do not be misled by "close darshan" or "gold ticket" agents outside the temple — the trust does not sell garbha griha access.
If you want to skip the general queue:
Cost: ₹200 per person
Booking: online at trimbakeshwartrust.com with ID proof
Entry: show QR e-ticket at the VIP gate
Wait time: typically ~45 minutes vs 2–3 hours general on regular days; on peak days (Shravan Somvar, Mahashivratri) the gap widens to 45 min vs 6–8 hours
Book VIP passes 2–3 days ahead for Shravan Mondays; longer for Mahashivratri.
Shravan Somvar — every Monday of Shravan (2026 window is roughly Jul 30 – Aug 28). Massive turnout, special abhishekam sequences.
Mahashivratri — the year's heaviest single day. All-night queue, special aarti sequence.
Nag Panchami, Kartik Purnima, Somvati Amavasya — meaningful bumps.
Book VIP pass ahead + arrive well before dawn on peak days.
Traditional order is Kushavarta bath → Jyotirlinga darshan. Kushavarta is a few metres from the temple, in the same complex. See our Kushavarta Kund guide for the ritual, history, and timing.
Carry a change of dry clothes for after the Kushavarta bath
Deposit valuables + phone at temple lockers (a small fee applies) — inside the mandap phones are restricted
Wear comfortable shoes for the walk to Brahmagiri if you're extending to Gangadwar
Kakad Aarti crowd is smaller than Sandhya Aarti's — a good option if you want a quieter experience
Vegetarian food only in the temple town's main dhabas around the temple
